All idigions, all faiths, all creeds and all saints have but come into this universe .with one great objective - to recall to man once again the great need to make the mner spiritual relationship into a dynamic and living fact in his own life. This is the central message of all saint and sages, ancient or modern. It is the fundamental theme of all the saiptures, to make the individual turn away from this illusion of the many, and move toward the inner shrine, wherein dwells blessedness. This is the true meaning of religion. All the practices and every technique ever devised by any Master, by any Guru has for its ultimate objective and purpose, the re-establishment and the development into all its fullness the relationship with that one being, with that one ptinciple, that one reality which alone we can really and truly say: "It is ours, and we belong to it."

About no other thing in this universe can we assert this Truth. Not even with regard to this body which we think is so dear and near to us, and with which we are in an absolute state of identification. Even the body will one day leave us and depart. Even when we consider the body as our own, how much control have\.Ve over it? If only we eat some wrong food in our diet which is upsetting and the stomach gets upset, can we say: "No, you belong to me. Stop! Do not vomit!" it will not listen to us and we will have to run to the sink!

Devotion is the one offering that is accepted by God. He is not moved by all the rich gifts and promises that are made to Him But into the garden of a life made fragrant with sweet devotion; God will surely enter. When the aroma of devotion continuously comes forth unceasingly from the heart, the mighty Lord must manifest.

God in His infinite mercy gives us His joy, His inspiration, true life, real wisdom, genuine happiness, and true understanding through all the various experiences of our lives. But the glory of God is revealed only in the quietness of the soul, in the truth. In the outside world, delusion is very strong; very few people can get away from the influences of their environment. The world goes on with -its infinite complexities and diverse experiences. Each life is new and each life has to be lived differently. Yet underlying all life is the voice of God, calling us to Him.

The more we concentrate on the outside, the less we will know of the inner exaltation of the everlasting joy of the soul. But most people do not understand this truth because of the influence of worldly company, of their environment and of their negative tendencies. All that, keeps us sadly engrossed in this illusion.

The greatest thing in life is meditation upon the Supreme Being. There is no greater treasure. there is no higher wealth and .there is no greater blessedness than to engage in this sacred spiritual practice. It would not at all be an exaggeration to s-ay that the main purpose of human birth is to prepare, train and discipline ourselves to engage in su~l meditation. It has been unmistakably declared by all messengers of God that the goal of human life is to attain s_upreme liberation. This liberation emancipates us from all sorrow and sufferings, confers freedom from death and bondage and bestows eternal bliss and eternal felicity upon us. This liberation is attained through illumination. This state of awareness is attainable through meditation and meditation only. Therefore, all spiritual practices have as their ultimate obj~tive , en.d and aim the preparation and qualification of the ·practitioner or the disciple to engage in effective and successful meditation. According to each one's religious background and aa;ording to each one's differenf ~mperament and .difference in personality · and nature. the specific religious practices that we engage in may apparently differ in their outer form. But_ in the ultinlate analysis, all these disciplines have only one common objective. That is,.to purify and to prepare us to ~ngage. in· a supreme and ultimate process of inner concentration.

Meditation is a universal common process which is to be found within the context of all spiritual life no matter what our background is. Meditation also unites the entire world fraternity of spiritual seekers. No matter how infinitely varied and different they may appear at the start of their spiritual journey, yet as they begin to approach or come near the conclusion of their devotional voyage, they will fmd that they all meet at the common universal platform where all spiritual seekers have to meet Meditation is a unifying process, because it is a spiritual process. And in the innermost essence of all; exists one and the same thing. Meditation is the application of the controlled and purified mind towards the process of concentration upon the divine reality which is within us. It is the end and aim of all spiritual practices. It is the supreme unique process which· is to be found within the context of all religious systems. We will find it in Hinduism and Buddhism. We will find it in Christianity and Islam. We are born here to meditate and realise this great reality.

All our life,jn all its details, must be so lived so that it may help us in engaging in successful meditation. Any aspect or any activity in our life which is unfavourable and contrary to our spiritual meditation is not good for us, and not helpful to our spiritual progress. Therefore we must carefully make analysis of our activities and frankly see what is beneficial and what is not conductive for our meditative life, and unhesitatingly renounce those things which are contrary to our spiritual advancement. This is the test of our sincerity, the guarantee of our success, and the sign of mature wisdom.

Outwardly meditation appears to be a physical process. Our body and mind are closely interconnected. They affect one another. Naturally, therefore, if we want to still the mind, if we want to make it calm and quiet we must bring about a corresponding stillness in our physical body. Therefore, a steady physical pose is necessary.

Meditation is· tfie continuous stream of unbroken thought, towards the chosen object of concentration. It is an attempt of the individual soul to link itself inwardly with the universal soul which is its origin, support, goal and substratum. It is its ultimate fulfilment in life. Meditation is the attempt of the human being to rise up to the Divine reality. It is the attempt on the part of man to once again relink himself with the Truth. It is the endeavour of the finite part once again to rise up to divine verity. It is gathering together of all the inner faculties and centring them upon the inner truth within. That truth is peace. That reality is luminous, audible and it is pure consciousness. It is Infmity. That reality is the stupendous voice of God. That reality is our home and original abode.

There are no diver'se meditations. All meditations are the same. There is only one meditation. That is gathering up of our consciousness and focusing it at one point. In meditation that focal point is always divine and spiritual. Meditation is always only upon a being who is referred to as God. Or it can be upon our own inner self. Both mean one and the same thing. For it i~ that same supreme universal Being who is present within us in the innermost centre of ourselves. It is our essential reality and our true self.

· Meditation must be practised regularly. When we try to concentrate and focus our · mind, various though~ will arise in it. This is natural and inevitable. As long as the

min<!_· exists thoughts will be there. But when these thoughts arise during the course of meditation we should not try to eject them forcibly. We cannot suppress them by force. If we do, then they will grow even more persistent and stronger. So instead of

Page 12: 32 Meditation

Page 3 of6

meditating we will be diverting our attention towards these thoughts. Thus thoughts would have succeeded in breaking our concentration.

We most just ignore them. Let them pass on and not identify ourselves with them. And try to bring the mind again to the focal point. If we try to forcib.ly wrestle with thoughts there will be unnecessary waste of energy and our attention will become diverted. Simply ignore them and let them pass on. Once again gently bring the mind back to the focal point. Continue carrying on this process in a non-violent manner.

The meditation process is a communion between the individual ·and the universal Being. it is an inner spiritual linking of ourselves with God. It is the flow of the human consciousness towards the eternal divine consciousness. The technique of meditation should only be used for this higher purpose.

Conductive to concentration is a good posture. Keep the body erect and straight. Sit steadily without any movement But always be entirely relaxed. We must feel totally at ease. We must be feeling so restful that we can gradually forget the very presence of the body. The body should not make itself felt by us at all. Then only we will not even feel that we are sitting. Thus we can continue for a long time without any discomfort. Now in this state of calmness and restfulness we take the mind inward and feel strongly the powerful presence in the innermost centre of our being. Feel, that it is the Universal soul in its indwelling aspect, making itself felt as divine presence. The universal soul is all-perfect. It is a source of all-blessedness. It is all health, strength, vigour and power.

Meditation will help to clarify all doubts. It makes· the mind more receptive. Mind is always active and moving and it can be difficult to bring it to stability. It is like a monkey jumping from branch to branch. Mind goes from one thought to another, ceaselessly. There is a right and wrong time to attempt meditation. Usually, in the morning just after awakening is a receptive time. We get up, wash our face and sit in a comfortable posture. The evening, just prior to sleep, is also good, for the mind is ready to relax. The wrong time is when we are especi~ly agitated, when our mind is disturbed and under the influence of any frantic activity or negativity. Our efforts then will be frustrating and fruitless. But when the restless, tired mind is weary of thought and craves silence, that is the time to give it what it wantS rest, quiet and solitude. Then our mind will go effortlessly into the meditative state1 we have been trying to bring about. Learn to listen to that inner voice. Everything will happen when the time is right. If we have done the preparation, it will be revealed to us. We cannot force growth. Observe how slowly creation develops. That is the great mystery.

It is essential to maintain balance in the body, mind and soul. Just as we need balanced nutrients to nourish the body, we also need certain elements to nourish the soul. In the same way, if we let the emotions take us wherever they wish, we will be ~ished spiritually and we will have wasted the same energy that might have takCo us to our goal.

Many people have difficulty when they begin to meditate. They attempt to 'coaquer' meditation, as if it were the enemy. That will never work. One must drift nalually into the meditative state. Without forcing, try to dive into the deep ocean within. Relax and let that part which .is neither body nor mind emerge. Let the body become r~diant with the energy of its own magnetic field, surrounded and filled with cosmic light. That very energy is prevalent everywhere in the universe·. One is made of the. essence of stars and galaxies. Relax more and more; feel that the heart and

Page 13: 32 Meditation

Page 4 of6

9vfetfitation

mind are at ease, that stress is evaporating and all thoughts are simply floating by like clouds suspended in a clear sky. Let thoughts and outside disturbances go without much notice. Let the mind rest in silence.

The only thing · to live for is the contact of the Divine, the communion with the Shabd, with God. That is why Jesus said: The harvest truly is plenteous but the labourers are few. It is impossible to deceive the Lord because He is sitting right behind our thoughts, and knows what we are thinking and desiring. If in our heart the desire is fi.nnly established to truly renounce the world, seek inner communion with Him and only strive to attain Him and nothing else, He will surely manifest.

We must endeavour to practice · meditation every day and learn to love it deeply. Without spirituality there cannot be happiness, either global or individual. And happiness must start with the individual. God-communion is the only answer to all problems, whether they be physical, moral or spiritual.

Devotion comes by feeling that we are one with God - that we are the children of God. We have jailed ourselves in the body because of ignorance of our Father. We must free ourselves from prison. We must keep our mind riveted on God at all times. Then we will find great peace and joy.

It is much more important to meditate than to spend hours seeking money or human love or anything else that we can think of. The more we meditate, keeping the mind centred in the spiritual state, the more we will experience contentment and peace.

If while meditating we are conscious of our breath, we are still tied to body awareness. To enter higher consciousness one must free himself from the bonds of the body through guru-given meditation methods.

If a sealed jar full of water is put in a tank of water, that which is in the jar is separated from that which surrounds the jar; but if we remove the lid, the water in the jar and the water in the tank could then inter-mingle. Similarly, ordinary people shut out God because their consciousness is sealed in by the lid of ignorance. When that lid is removed by meditation, one feels the peace of God inside and outside the body. As we increase the length and depth of meditation we will find more and more peace, and an ever-new joy. Whatever else we may try, it can never produce the divine consciousness that comes through meditation.

The Lord is all around, but we do not feel Him And we cannot feel Him. within or without, until we remove the lid of ignorance, discover Him within .ourselves and merge our consciousness with His. To sink in material desires will lead to suffocation. To sink in the ocean of God will lead to everlasting life.

Therefore, do not seek happiness in the objects of the senses but fino joy within in the divine communion with the Shabd. Remember it is the Lord alo'ne who changes

·each heart; we must not ascribe to ourselves the power to do goo<l. The ·only one who does good is God. It is His world. He is the working agent in everything. If we dedicate all actions in His name and truly believe He is the indweller of this body we will be amazed to witness how our deeds and thoughts are gradually chai;lged from the negative to the positive.

In the Bhagavad Gita the Lord says: The ignorant, oblivious of Me as the maker of all' creatures, . are 'blind to My presence within the human fonn.

9vferfitation

The soul is bound to the body by a chain of desires, temptations, troubles and worries, and it is trying to free itself. If we kee~ tugging at that chain which is holding us to mortal consciousness, someday an· invisible divine hand will intervene and snap it apart, and we will be set free. By communion with the Shabd let us protect ourselves against temptation and sorrow.

Meditation is simply reminding us again and again that we are not the limited physical body, but the infmite soul. Meditation is arousing the memory of our real self and forgetting entirely what we falsely imagine we are. If a drunken prince goes into the slums and forgetting entirely his true identity, begins lamenting, "How poor I am," his friends will laugh at him_ and say, "Wake up, and remember that you are a Prince."

We have already lost so much time- death may take us away at any moment We must strive to realise Him before we go out of the body cage and forever miss the opportunity of a human birth. -

Temptation, greed, attachment to people and possessions, slavery to the senses, ignorance of our spirit-nature, idleness, and mechanical living are the worst enemies to God realisation. While busy working, keep the mind fixed in the divine consciousness that is cultivated by meditation, for only then we will be really living. The uplifting results of meditation remain with us, and when we come down to perform the daily activities, we will bring and retain the remembrance of that state.

In worldly ambitions there is always an element of uncertainty. Some people spend year after year trying wholeheartedly but unsuccessfully to reach a worldly aim. But in the .spiri~ual path no wholehearted devotee is ever unsuccessful. His labours are neverm vam.

The greatest enemy of divine realisation is the body; it becomes easily tired and wants to give up. A true devotee never relaxes his efforts nor admits the supremacy of the body. Continuous vigilance is required. We must believe, against all seeming odds, that we will attain to the aim. Even though God may not seem to respond, one should not succumb to doubts but should unremittingly continue in the holy quest. Perseverance is the whole magic of spiritual success. If the Lord responded easily and openly to the devotees' prayers for divine illumination, all men would immediately seek Him - not for the love of Him, but for His limitless rewards.

No matter what happens, never give up the vftal practice of meditation. Time is passing, and one. day the fearful realisation will come that life has gone by as though in a twinkling, and still the aim was not attained. Let no·day pass without our having made an effort to meditate. Without unquenchable enthusiasm nothing can be gained. Great happiness comes to the devotee who is steadfast in his quest.

Through meditation we fulfil the very purpose of human life. Meditation is the only worship that pleases the Father. Through meditation we become worthy of His grace and become receptive to His.love. We build and grow the love and devotion which He gives us, these will ·speedily c-arry us towards our goal. So attending to meditation is submitting to the Will of God, it is being obedient to the Lord and the

_ Master'. It is through meditation, by· His grace, that we develop and intense longing to return to the Source. The effect is truly a miracle! We turn from the world, and with the sam~ intensity that we once ran towards it, we now run towards the Father. _We experience that bliss and joy of real love, o_f sublime devotion, as we ultimately merge with the Shabd to be transfomed from the drop into the Divine Ocean itself . .

!Meditation

No matter how far we have strayed away or how abandoned we may feel, the footsteps of our devotion through meditation still will lead us to God; thus, our lives need not be spent in vain.

The world will go on without us. We are not as important as we think. Countless men have been thrown into the dustbin of the centuries. Therefore, do not let life pass uselessly. If we are beggars in this world but are striving to meditate to reach the Sha.bd we are greater than the most materially accomplished of men. When we attain Him, all things will be added unto us.

It is not what we hear that redeernsus, but what we do with what we hear. Many hear what they should do, but few act upon it. When we know a thing is right, why should we not go after it? Why should we not cry for the Lord until the skies are shaken with our prayers?

Medit.a!ion is a way of life. We do not merely close ourselves in a room for a few hours, then forget about it for the rest of the day. It must take on a practical fonn, reflecting in every daily action. To live in the teachings, to live in that atmosphere is itself meditation. We are building that particular environment every moment for our daily meditation. Everything we do must consciously prepare us for the next meditation.

To live in that atmosphere is to live a simple, happy and relaxed life. The effect of peace and bliss of the spiritual practice enable us to adjust according to the dictates of life while retaining our equanimity and balance. We contentedly face our karmas, both good and bad, by continually adapting to their ever-changing pattern. We . cannot change the course of events decreed by our destiny. By obedience to the Master and by attending to meditation we remain contented and calm as we go through our earthly existence.

God is so real to His devotees! Every word they have said about Him is true, but His play is shrouded in mystery. Our seeking must be continuous. We cannot summon God by a little cry; it must be unceasing, and not quelled by toys of money, fame, and human love. When our desire is only for him, He will manifest. Then our lessons in the world will be finished and we will be filled ever-more with the joy of the Infmite. If man will not himself cry and struggle to attain his own salvation, will anyone else do it for him?

With faith and perseverance we will eventually witness our own enlightenment. When the right time comes, what is already working silently and invisibly within will unfold. In. the xv.eantime, we must not get depressed or disappointed. The right effort and positive karmas will cause growth. When the being we really are begins to emerge, all confusion, all fear and all sorrow will drop away from us. We will see clearly where we belong. We belong to no nation, no culture, no race, no philosophy, no social system. Identification is a question of conditioning and environment; a mere trick of perception, which is limited. We are not limited. We start to see the play in full light, and we move through life unmoved, unattached. We

.~e always. exactly who and what we are. Complete and Eternal.
