2 Employ activities that will make the students enjoy the language learning and consequently motivate them to listen and speak in English.

3 Make the students appreciate customs, cultures, and tradition of other countries, and consequently enhance their interest to proactively communicate in English with people from other countries.

● Students will also be given instructions on rules and expected behavior/manners during English class.

● HRT will prepare the evaluation sheet (“Furikaeri Sheet” in Japanese language), and will explain how to fill it up.

After watching the model dialogues, drill the model dialogues.

6 Activity/Games: “Autograph Collecting” Distribute the worksheets to the

students. Then, students make pairs, converse

with each other using the target dialogues, and finally exchange signatures.

Students who get the most signatures win the game.

* It is helpful for the Ss to understand the family vocabulary using a family tree. Because of the familiarity of the students to Sazae-san’s family, it is suggested to use this material for this activity.

5 “Touch Game” (rules are similar to that of the “Fly Swatter Game”/”Snap” or “Karuta” in Japanese language)

HRT or AET puts the picture cards of Sazae-san’s family on the black board.

AET or HRT holds the pop art of Wakame-chan and asks the Ss to identify Wakame’s mother by touching her picture on the board.

The Ss then take turns touching a card. Students may be divided into groups

when doing this activity (the most ideal is 4 groups). Then, do the activity like a race.

The group whose members are able to touch the pictures many times than the members of other groups wins the game.

3 Review the “Family Vocabulary”

4 Keyword Karuta Game

① Divide the Ss into groups, and give them a set of family karuta cards.

② AET or HRT decides a keyword (one of the family vocabulary). The Ss put their hands on their head.

③ AET or HRT calls out family vocabulary different from the keyword and Ss repeat saying each vocabulary. When the family

vocabulary keyword is called out, Ss race to get the corresponding picture card.

5 Family Basket(same concept as Fruit Basket game)

All the Ss except one sit on chairs in a circle.

Each student has a card such as “mother, father, brother or sister.”

One student stands in the center of the circle and calls out a family vocabulary. All the Ss who fit the description have to get up and rush to another chair. The remaining student who doesn’t find a seat stays in the center and calls out the next family vocabulary.

● AET asks the students (Ss) to repeat saying the words/phrases.

3rd Grade May  #( 7 ) 「Let’s catch insects!①」 * To know the names of insects in English.* Insect vocabulary and related phrases

Other suggested games: Bingo Game “Open the Book” gameo Open the book (textbook) to a

certain page number. “Quick Count” gameo Divide the Ss into two groups and

make them stand up in a circle. One student of each group starts calling out number one (1) and sits down. The student next to the one who first called out number one (1) calls out the succeeding number and sits down, too. The rest of the students continue doing the same until all are seated. The group that has its entire member seated quickly enough wins the game.

Variation of the game:1. Take one card and change the order of the rest of the

their group members. Give the representatives of each

group a catch net. Students say “Let’s catch a ~.” Then, AET says the insect name. The representatives then try to catch

the insects (glued in the balloon) as soon as the HRT or the AET calls out an insect vocabulary.

●Ss race against each other in catching the balloon.

Student(s) win if they catch the balloon with the correct insect glued on it.

If somebody fails, start again from the second student.

When the Ss get used to playing, regroup the students and increase the number of students in a group.

AET imitates an animal sound. Then, asks the question “What animal is it?” of the students.

Each country has its own way of describing how a particular animal cries or sounds. It is suggested to use such cries or sounds for this activity as it also allows the students some cultural exposure.

Each of the Ss is given an animal card.

The Ss find a partner and do Jyanken.

If the winner has a dog card he or she asks the partner “Do you have a
