Everyone is Welcome
A t the back of an old cupboard in
the rectory a vicar found a bowl with five eggs and £1,000 in it. He asked his wife what it was and she replied that every time he preached a bad sermon she put an egg in the bowl. Feel-ing flushed with suc-cess the vicar said, “Only five eggs over 25 years; that’s not bad!” But his wife replied, “Well, dear, every time I collect-ed a dozen I sold them for 50 pence!”
Sometimes we have to redefine what success really is. And it becomes clear that what the world considers to be success is usually not what Christians are striv-ing for.
E ven James and John were guilty in today’s gospel
of seeking preferment. The “favour” they asked of Jesus was to exercise authority and power in the kingdom that they believed Jesus was still going to establish here on earth. They wanted
to be able to control, to have the power to com-mand people, to restrict or grant access. Does this ring any bells? Lis-ten carefully if you are a politician, a priest’s housekeeper or a doc-tor’s receptionist!
Another sign of so-called success that many seek
is wealth. Money is the ultimate goal of lots of people and they meas-ure their place on the social ladder by how much they have in the bank and how much they can splash out on what passes for success in our society. A luxury home, a yacht, the best car, designer clothes, gold jewellery etc. Yet such people remain in-consolable at funerals…
T he success of power and money is joined by anoth-
er false idol: fame. Some people would do anything to be famous, to have their fifteen minutes in the spotlight, to be known and recog-nised on the street. The thousands of “wanna-
bees” who turn up for TV talent show auditions bear wit-ness to this concept of success, as does the cult of personali-ty which raises the status of people who contribution to mak-ing the world a bet-ter place is usually quite small indeed.
S o what is suc-cess? You’ll know you’re
successful, says Jesus, when you find yourself slaving for the good of others, when you’ve learned to put yourself in second place and when you feel you are at other people’s service so much that your life is being drained on their behalf. Perhaps you’d like to reconsider wheth-er you really want to be a Christian!
REDEFINING SUCCESS
FAITH IN FOCUS:
This Sunday is World Mission Sunday:
Today the Holy Father invites all Cath-olics to contribute to a special collec-tion for Missio, his official charity for overseas mission. Your prayers and donations today will support the work of missionaries and young churches like the church in Mon-golia, as they share faith, build church-es and provide healthcare and educa-tion, often in difficult and dangerous environments.
The World Mission Sunday Collection will support mission projects worldwide that bring God’s love and message of dignity for all. Please give what you can, and if possible, please use the Gift Aid envelopes if you are a tax payer. Every gift makes a real dif-ference to people living in poverty who are yearning to hear the Good News of God’s love for them .
Free Prostate Cancer Screening At St. David’s Church Hall
Prostate cancer is the most common male can-cer in the UK, accounting for almost a quarter of male cancers. Each year, nearly 35,000 men are diagnosed and more than 10,000 die from the disease. Men over fifty may develop early prostate cancer which is still at the curable stage. A simple blood test may indicate the signs of early changes to the level of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). Buckley and Mold Lions Club have seen the benefits, (from the work of fellow Lions from other clubs) of organising free testing at a screening event. This event will take place at St David’s Church Hall in Mold, CH7 1LH, be-tween 6.30 pm and 9.30 pm on November 17th. It will be attended by consultant urologist David Baxter-Smith. All the men tested will receive the results of their blood test in a letter from him within a few weeks of the test session. Men showing higher than normal levels of PSA in their blood will be advised to seek further ad-vice from their GPs or from urological special-ists. Teresa Nickson (2nd Vice District Governor Lions 105BS)
