This leaflet gives information on your24-hour ECG (also called a Holtermonitoring test). It does not replace theneed for personal advice from ahealthcare professional. Please ask us ifyou have any questions.

What is a 24-hour ECG?A 24-hour ECG records your heartrhythm over 24 hours. The monitor isabout the size of a mobile phone andyou will need to wear it around yourwaist. You do not need to stay inhospital and you can continue withyour normal daily activities during thetest.

Why do I need a 24-hourECG?You may have experienced symptomssuch as palpitations (the feeling ofstrong or fast heart beats), dizziness, chest pain or shortness of breath. Aroutine ECG has not shown up anyproblems so we would like to monitoryour heart over a 24-hour period to geta better picture.

How is the monitor fitted? We will attach three electrodes (smallsticky patches connected to leads) toyour chest. Small wires from themonitor are then attached to theseelectrodes. You will wear the monitoraround your waist clipped into a belt or

waistband. It takes about 20 minutes tofit the electrodes and monitor.

What should I do while I amwearing the monitor? You should continue with your normaldaily activities, including sport. Pleasedo not remove or adjust the monitorover the 24-hour period withoutspeaking to us first. You should wearthe monitor day and night. A cardiacphysiologist will tell you when and howto remove the monitor.
