Hidden Cliff Hotel & Nature is a structure that has taken a step closer to the natural
environment of Jeju. Located within the Yerae Ecological Preservation Area in harmony
with nature and enjoying nature itself, the hotel is also a good example of architectural
development for showing the wonderful nature. The overall concept of the landscape
management plan of Jeju Island can be defined as ‘narrative landscape’ in which
nature, facilities and activities of people are continuously integrated. Thus, the architect
has mediated the relation between natural environment and the activities of people
with this structure to make one grand landscape.
In the layout of the hotel, which respects the principles of the landscape management
plan, the landscape axis connecting Mt. Halla and the sea is emptied: instead it adopts
the scenery of Yerae Creek as the main view. Originating from Mt. Halla, Yerae Creek
has been around for a very long time but has not received attention so far. But as you
get closer, the large scale of valleys and riverside scenery is overwhelming. As you
ascend to the upper floors of the hotel, the scenery of Yerae Creek further expands,
and the view extends beyond Jungmun to Mt. Halla, making the hotel seem to float on
a sea of greenery.
The exterior of the hotel is formed by layers of horizontal strips of blue lime
stone finish that replicates the natural characteristics of Jeju. The horizontal
architectural form is a formative language designed to harmonize with
horizontal elements, bearing in mind the landscape of the horizon around the
Jungmun Complex. Before being elements of architecture, it is also to function
as a device to mediate nature and the activities of people. Horizontal strips that
make up the whole landscape expand to the earth and combine with the
landscape, becoming the background of people’s activities. Horizontal strips
form a restaurant deck on level B2, and on B3 is an infinity pool 47m long. This
infinity pool is 15m away from the village and 35m away from the river and it
gives a feeling seemingly like a heavenly streamer inside nature.
The original terrain where the lobby is located was 7m below the entrance. We
designed a grass garden that symbolizes the hills of Jeju in the empty space in
front of the hotel, which was created during the process of constructing the
parking lot and hotel lobby underground to keep the original terrain. To
preserve the original terrain, we pushed the parking lot and hotel lobby
underground, creating an empty space in front of the hotel. Here, we designed
a grass garden that symbolizes the hills of Jeju. This garden is combined with
the main building of the hotel through several crater-like courtyards.
The architectural structure of the hotel is revealed in the internal space, and
interior finish was kept to a minimum. The upper structure of the grass-
covered parking lot consists of repeating triangular structures of various
lengths. These triangular structures make the entry and circulation of vehicles
curve naturally, and create an identity for the parking space that could be
bleak. The atrium of the Cliff Wing inside the hotel has a wide horizontal strip
that makes it look like a cylinder, and a deep ambience is created through
tempered lighting. Architectural spaces in hotel design are one of the factors
that make a hotel sustainable.1ST FLOOR PLAN

The project seeks a balance between a joint organization, and not give up the presence of clustered buildings, between
get a sense of unitary piece, and the inherited. Interlacing three types of interventions; rehabilitation, restructuring for
new uses, and the partial replacement, selecting items of value and traces of the place. A courtyard sum of the existing
ones, organizes and provides quality as well as a reference section. This allows with one unevenness to solve different
levels of buildings, maintaining the stone walls and functional their holes. A “generic” and flexible spatial distribution,
overturn in “cross” mode the street and courtyard, and only files and services are closed space. The courtyard
connects the building with the surrounding streets at various levels. The main entrance, is where the new and old
architecture join. It’s where public scale appears as a double-height space that gives presence to the common
courtyard from the street, recovering for it the idea of a court access gap between the city and the building. We support
on the strengthened walls. Preserving the structural typology and scale, horizontal concrete structure assumes the
strong overloads of the program. Each element works for what it was designed, without overlapping structures. The
gaps with traditional windows to the outside, contrast to hidden mark carpentry glass, marks the thickness of the wall,
showing both the passing of time as a change of use. The preserved facades, are covered behind the gaps, to
maximize light. In the courtyard, the gallery with protecting mobile wooden slats, optimizes space and lighting-
ventilation. The unit deck is supported by the party walls, and is seen forming a rich space of variable section.

Theatre de Stoep is part of the master plan by Sjoerd Soeters for the town of Spijkenisse which aims to regenerate
the town centre and to increase the appeal of the area. Theatre de Stoep responds to this revival by merging the
archetypal function of a theatre with the specific requirements of a regional theatre and its requisite to cater to the
varied needs of the local community. The theatre is therefore designed with a dual emphasis on the chimeric nature
of the world of the stage and the social aspects of the theatre experience. In the design of the 5,800m2 building a
larger and a smaller theatrical space, several interlinked foyers, a grand cafe and a restaurant, an artist’s cafe, a VIP
lounge, numerous dressing rooms, multifunctional rooms and offices are all brought together within one volume. The
placement of the various internal volumes results in a building in the form of a flower, with a large, column-free
central foyer forming the heart of the structure.
Vertical foyer The vertical foyer becomes a pivotal point in the social functioning of the theatre, a ‘stage’ for the
visitors and a dynamic focal point surrounded by viewpoints on varying levels. Furthermore, the foyer serves to
organize wayfinding and the linking of the different programs within the building. From the foyer, the sculptural
stairway forms the binding element towards the entrances to the auditoria.
