President’s Message – Tina Hiddink
What a memorable year 2015 was for the Ontario Simmental Association’s (OSA) membership.
The OSA members hosted a successful OSA – AGM* at the Best Western in Peterborough where we shared an evening of fellowship with the Ontario Charolais Association members. *PLEASE NOTE the 2016 OSA – AGM will be held at the Holiday Inn, Peterborough on March 5, 2016. The Ontario Charolais Association members will be joining us for dinner offering Ontario Corn Fed Beef. Don’t forget the auction.
The OSA had been approached by the CSA to host the 2015 CSA – AGM and National YCS Show. We made arrangements to hold the events at the Lindsay Exhibition Grounds, Lindsay. The LEX staff were great to work with and we thank them for the use of their facility and their staff were excellent to work with.
Well we did it! Ontario should be proud! On the August 2015 long weekend we held the largest National YCS Show ever. The CSA – AGM membership attendence was one of the largest in recent times. For the Prime Rib Roast Banquet we sold all 275 tickets and could have sold more! The Friends of Simmental Foundation Fund Auction was the largest fund raiser ever and we thank Ron Nolan and his Committee for all their hard work. We also want to congratulate Ken Lewis, Lewis Farms, the winner of the heifer donated by Elm Tree Simmentals.
There are so many to thank. Bruce Holmquist and the CSA staff for giving Ontario the opportuinty to prove what we could host this event and their support through the planning stages. Thank you Carla Schmitt, what a “way to cut your teeth”! Also a special thank you to the committee chairs: Dan O’Brien - sponserships; Dave Milliner – budget and guest speakers; Carla Nolan hospitality / Welcome Packages; Debbie Elliott – registrations; Josh Wooddisse – 2015 Breeders Directory, advertising, tech support ect; and all the OSA directors for helping were ever needed. Couldn’t have done it without you. We are happy to report that the CSA – AGM event budget broke even. Thank you New Holland for your continued national sponsorship to the CSA and being a major sponsor of the 2015 CSA - AGM and National YCS Show in Lindsay. Also want to thank the Ontario sponsors: commercial/businesses, Ontario Simmental zones, Ontario Simm-Belles, Simmental breeders, individuals for their support.
In 2015 we celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Simmental cattle being shown at the RAWF. It was an honour for us to recognise Kingfield Farm Simmentals for showing cattle for each of the 40 years. Barb Vance, V5 Simmentals presented the banner on behalf of the OSA. Tyler Libke was the judge for the open show with over 100 head entered. Charles Burns was our barn boss again in 2015 and the Simmental representatives to the RAWF Billy Elmhirst and John Pearson. Thank you. The Wine and Cheese reception was hosted by the Ontario Simm-Belles and we sincerely thank Carla Nolan and her family, again for organizing this very successful event.
The Bright Light’s Futurity also took place at the RAWF and there were enough nominations for 2016 that we are happy to announce it will take place again at the 2016 RAWF.
The Ontario YCS also held their provincial show at the RAWF. We must acknowlege their enthusiasm by attending provincial youth events as they are the future of our breed and our agriculture industry.
The OSA continues to support the 4-H Beef Programs in Ontario providing a gift to all Ontario 4-H beef members who show a Simmental animal as their 4-H project. We would ask that membership advise their local 4-H County Clubs of this initiative. Again we thank Keitha Harris - Donovan for volunteering and her continued support to the OSA in this important program. Effective August 31, 2015, Debbie Elliott resigned as Treasurer of the OSA. We thank her for the six years she was our Treasurer. An announcement for the a new Treasurer will be provided in due course. Until the announcement is made all correspondence/payments are to be forwarded to Josh Wooddisse: Ontario Simmental Association c/o Josh Wooddisse RR # 1, 8491 Line 14, Palmerston, Ontario N0G 2P0. You can also contact him at [email protected] or call at 1-519-362-5373.
We can not stress enough that the CSA and OSA want to encourage and look forward to two way communication with our membership to answer questions, concerns or comments. We all agree it is a good time to be in the beef business. Wishing you all, success with your 2016 calving season.

Additional information from the Editor
There is no public health risk associated with the Bluetongue virus. The five Bluetongue virus serotypes
found in the U.S. are on the immediately notifiable list under Ontario’s Animal Health Act. Cattle affected
with these serotypes of Bluetongue virus can show mild or no clinical signs but serve as a reservoir for the
disease. Sheep that are susceptible, such as those in previously unaffected areas, can show signs of serious
illness and death. There are no control or eradication programs for diseases on the immediately notifiable
list, however, the presence of these diseases can affect trade of live animal, semen and embryos. Trade of
beef for human consumption will not be affected. Bluetongue in cattle is often detected in abattoir through
national surveillance testing programs.

To say I was overwhelmed when I was chosen to present the final award for the YCS Program at the Canadian Simmental Convention 2015 would be true! So much so that I couldn’t properly say “Thank You”.
To all YCSA members and the “Front Runners” in the management positions who made the National Classic YCS Show at Lindsay, a resounding success, congratulations for a job exceedingly well done!
To Carla Schmitt, YCSA Coordinator, Sophie Wotten, Canadian YCSA President, Ontario YCSA President Dylan Foley, you should all be so proud.
To put on a show of this magnitude is no easy task. To have to share your ideas right across the provinces is no easy task. When you put each persons strengths and ideas together look what you accomplished!
The trophy, in itself was beautiful, I do have first hand knowledge of the recipients work ethics and dedication, so it was a proud moment for me to present Dylan Foley with this Spirit of the Show Award.
To each and all who made the 2015 YCSA National Show and the AGM such a resounding success, I sincerely thank you.

Simmental History
Simmental is an influential breed of cattle whose history dates back to the Middle Ages. Early records indicate that Simmental cattle were the result of a cross between large German cattle and a smaller breed indigenous to Switzerland. The name Simmental is derived from the name of the area where the cattle were first bred the Simme Valley.
Technically, the Simmental designation includes several breeds in Europe. The name is given specifically to the breed in Switzerland, while in Germany and Austria it is known as Fleckvieh, and in France as Pie Rouge. The Pie Rouge includes three separate herd book registries namely Abondance, Montbeliard and Pie Rouge de l'Est. In Canada the breed is known as Simmental.
Parisien, the first Simmental bull brought into Canada, was imported in 1967. By 1969 the Canadian Simmental Association was incorporated under the Livestock Pedigree Act. Excellent performance in production of milk and beef, plus exceptional adaptability to a variety of environmental influences has led the Simmental breed to world-wide popularity and distribution. There are approximately 35 million head of Simmental in Europe, where they are most popular. Export to a number of other countries has resulted in an excellent representation on all five continents. Simmental breeders in a variety of countries have achieved favorable results in the crossing of Simmental with British and continental breeds. In sub-tropical areas, crossing with the indigenous breeds (eg. Brahman, Zebu) has resulted in calves exhibiting a great deal of hybrid vigor with an excellent rate of gain and an ability to withstand environmental pressure.
Generations of selective breeding, with the objective of maximizing milk and beef production at minimum cost, have created a well-balanced hereditary proponent that is highly adaptable, heavily muscled, fine lined, and well conformed. Docility and exceptional mothering traits are other outstanding characteristics of the breed. Color varies from gold to red with white, and may be evenly distributed or clearly defined in patches on a white background. The head is white and often a white band appears over the shoulders. The majority have pigment around the eyes, helping to reduce eye problems which occur from bright sunlight.
The heavy muscling, extraordinary length and overall size and weight of the animal are combined to produce a well fleshed carcass of solid red meat with a minimum of waste fat. In meat production, Simmental are more than competitive with all other breeds, as their body length gives a higher percentage of choice cuts.
To assist cattlemen in selecting bulls that fit their needs, the Canadian Simmental Association has developed the beef cattle industry's most comprehensive Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) system. This system enables buyers to identify traits such as easy calving and low birth weight; weaning and yearling growth performances; and maternal traits such as milk, calving ease, and weaning weight.
