2 - A Salute to Lake Roosevelt Jr./Sr. High School 2015
Jazmine Sumner named Valedictorian for 2015
by Scott Hunter
Jazmine Sumner is truly off to a “Running Start,” just as the name of this state’s program for helping
high school students attend college implies. The class of 2015’s valedictorian man-
aged to keep the top grade point average, a 3.668 out of a possible 4.0, even though she’s actually been attending college classes in Omak for the last couple years.
She graduates on Saturday with a high school diploma from Lake Roosevelt Jr/Sr High School and an associate in applied sci-ence degree from Wenatchee Valley College.
Since her junior year, Sumner has been taking college-credit classes in Omak or online.
She took Algebra II at Lake Roosevelt in grade 11, but since then she only goes to the school for guidance and scholarship work. She heads to Omak twice a week, starting early in the morning and heading back home about 7 p.m.
“It’s a long day,” she said. And it takes a toll. She got her first-ever
Cs in online classes in art appreciation and
American government. Her GPA had been 3.969 before starting college, she said.
Sumner doesn’t slack off when not in Omak, either. Online classes keep her busy, and she works four days a week at the Tropical Pig, where her boss lets her study if business is slow.
She doesn’t recommend online classes, she says, preferring “in-class interaction.”
Teachers answer questions in class, where you also benefit from others’ ques-tions. Online, she said, entering questions in an online discussion forum just doesn’t measure up.
“Half the time, youe teacher doesn’t even get back to you until the assignment’s already due,” she said.
She has focused on science courses and is enrolled at Spokane Community Col-lege’s ultrasound technician program. After finishing that, she plans to go on to Seattle University to earn a bachelor’s degree in the field.
Jazmine is the daughter of Jessica Sum-ner, of Grand Coulee, and Kenneth Sumner, of Oregon.
Kammi Rosenbaum isclass Salutatorian for 2015by Scott Hunter
At 3.660, Salutatorian Kammi Rosenbaum’s grade point aver-age is eight thousandths lower
than that of Jazmine Sumner, the vale-dictorian, but she’s just happy for “super smart” friend Jazmine.
The same easygoing attitude affects Rosenbaum’s planning for the future.
“It’s finally sinking in that I’m actu-ally graduating on Saturday,” she admit-ted Monday. “I kind of live in the moment more than I plan ahead.”
Even so, she does plan to adjust to life in a totally different environment before tackling the next big goal. She’ll move to Spokane to attend Spokane Falls Commu-nity College but plans to delay her start until winter quarter, “so I can … get ad-justed to a bigger city first,” she said. “I can go there for a day, but I don’t know about actually staying.”
Feeling her way through such calcu-lations may be just part of Rosenbaum’s style, which indicates strengths in aca-demic areas as diverse as math and the arts.
Always strong in math and a lover of numbers, she’s thought about accounting as a career, but she’s also toyed with going to art school because she loves to draw.
She’ll have a couple years at SFCC to decide what to do and which bigger school
to head to next.Having moved here from Inchelium in
second grade, she’s part of the last fourth-grade class to emerge from A.E. Wright Elementary, now demolished beneath the new Lake Roosevelt Schools complex. They’ve seen a lot of changes, and the first senior class to graduate from the new school has had mixed feelings, she said.
The junior/senior high mixes kids from seventh grade up. And teachers are more strict now. Even gum chewing is a big deal.
But Rosenbaum, who will graduate Saturday along with her cousin, walking the same stage her brother did in 2012, appreciates the close-knit atmosphere at the school, where the students know each other, and even all of the office staff, well.
Asked if she had advice for those start-ing in the school, she didn’t hesitiate: “Do not procrastinate at all. If you start (pro-crastinating) your freshmen year, it will lead into all your years at high school, and there are students, like me, who like to push things off to the last minute.”
That caused her problems, especially in Mr. Daniels’ English class, where she thinks she’ll emerge with a B+. “All those essays,” she said.
And who knows what that might have done to her GPA?
Kammi is the daughter of Kevin Rosen-baum and Robin Tonasket.
