The Robertson Athletic Complex



A complete athletic facility comparable to the best among colleges of Allegheny’s size, the David V� Wise Sport & Fitness Center was opened in the fall of 1997� The sparkling multi-purpose arena is the crown jewel of the athletic complex, and the hub of all indoor activities on campus�

The 1,200-seat performance arena is home to the basketball and volleyball teams. The NeoShock floor is used by several NBA teams, including the Miami Heat� The team locker rooms are located at court level, measuring approximately 18 x 30 feet� Spectators enter the arena at street level onto a spacious concourse that features concessions and a celebration of Allegheny’s rich athletic history. The playing floor lies 15 feet below, creating a remarkable ampitheater effect. The bleachers, which include several rows of chairback seating, can be electronically compressed to create two full length courts for basketball practice�

The first men’s basketball game at the Wise Center took place on Nov� 28, 1997 at the PNC Bank Classic, with the Gators defeating Defiance 85-78. Allegheny’s first points were scored by Ben Shulz, who went on to record the Center’s first double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds�

One of the most dominant landmarks on the Allegheny campus, the Wise Center truly serves the needs of all 500-plus Gator student-athletes, as well as the entire campus community� The main part of the facility is the sports forum, located on the upper floor. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by all intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training� Suspended above the sports forum is a 200-meter indoor track�

Located just off the main floor of the sports forum is the Allegheny Fitness Center, which underwent a major facelift in 2014. A main piece of the fitness center is the brand new weight room, which received over a dozen new pieces of equipment in August 2014, including benches, weight racks, and free weights, all customized for Gator athletics�

The fitness center also houses dozens of brand new pieces of cardio equipment, which were put into use in the spring of 2014� The treadmills, stationary bikes, and ellipticals all have fully digital and customizable user displays� Opened in the fall of 2014, the functional training room in the fitness center boasts all of the necessities for cross fit and other similar workouts, including pull up bars, kettlebells, machine balls, and much more�

In addition, the Wise Center natatorium is located on the same level as the fitness center to support additional training and rehab opportunities year-round�

Just two blocks north of campus sits the Andrew Wells Robertson Athletic Complex, which is the hub of Gator outdoor sports� The crown jewel of the Robertson Athletic Complex is Frank B� Fuhrer Field, a 3,700-seat stadium that is home to Gator football, soccer, lacrosse, and track� The fully-lighted stadium was resurfaced in the summer of 2015 and now boasts the most modern Field Turf available� The Robertson Complex also houses 12 fully-lit tennis courts, softball, baseball, and two natural grass soccer fields, and a scenic trail that has played host to various regional and conference cross country championship events�

Coaching Staff

BOB SIMMONSHEAD COACH - FIRST SEASON

On July 28, 2015, Bob Simmons was named the 18th head coach in the history of the Allegheny men’s basketball program�

Boasting two decades of collegiate coaching experience, Simmons comes to Meadville after spending two seasons as the head coach at Marywood University in Scranton, Pa� During his inaugural 2013-14 campaign at Marywood, the Pacers established new school records for field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage, while producing a pair of honorable mention All-Colonial States Athletic Conference selections� In addition, his squad won the CSAC Team Academic Award for boasting the highest team GPA among the conference’s 10 men’s basketball squads at 3�06�

In 2014-15, Marywood finished 14-11, marking the second best single-season record in program history. The Pacers again established new team marks for field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage, while also leading the CSAC in team defense, as they surrendered an average of just 67 points per game� His team also continued to perform admirably in the classroom, topping the conference for a second straight season with a mark of 3�33�

Prior to his tenure at Marywood, Simmons worked on the staff at Division-I Ball State University for six seasons, starting in 2007 as an assistant coach, before being elevated to Associate Head Coach in September 2009. With Simmons on the bench, the Cardinals turned in five top-three finishes in

the Mid-American Conference’s West Division, including the 2010-11 squad that finished 19-13. He was instrumental in the team’s recruiting efforts, seeing a total of five Cardinal players named to the MAC All-Freshman Team during his stint at Ball State.

Simmons went to Ball State after working as an assistant at Division-I Lehigh for five seasons (2002-07) under head coach Billy Taylor. He held a variety of roles at the Bethlehem, Pa. institution, including coordinating recruiting efforts, devising strength and conditioning programs, overseeing scouting and scheduling, and presiding over the team’s annual summer camp program� Simmons’ tenure at Lehigh was highlighted by a 2003-04 season in which the Mountain Hawks finished 20-11, won the Patriot League championship, and advanced to the NCAA National Tournament�

He began his collegiate coaching career at the Division III level, starting in 1996 when he was named assistant coach at Lebanon Valley College. Serving as coordinator of recruiting, academics, scouting, film exchange, and strength and conditioning during his four years with the Flying Dutchmen, the team went a combined 78-35, reaching the NCAA Division III playoffs in both 1997 and 1999, while winning the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region Tournament in both 1998 and 2000�

In 2000, he accepted the head coaching position at Delaware Valley College, where he worked for two seasons before moving on to Lehigh�

Simmons graduated from Wilkes University in 1993 with degrees in organizational communicatons and secondary education� While at Wilkes, he served as a student assistant on the men’s basketball coaching staff during his senior campaign, and, after graduating, worked as an assistant at Crestwood High School in Mountain Top, Pa�, and Bishop Hafey High School in Hazleton, Pa�, where he played scholastically�

Simmons and wife Deb are the proud parents of two daughters, Hannah and Isabela, and they reside in Meadville�

MIKE KENNEYASSISTANT COACH - FIRST SEASON

Coaching Staff

Mike Kenney was hired as the Allegheny men's basketball assistant coach in August 2015�

A Cincinnati, Ohio native, Kenney arrives in Meadville after spending four seasons as an assistant on the men's basketball staff at Marietta College. While with the Pioneers, he was part of the most successful stretch in program history, as the team went a combined 84-26 during his tenure, and advanced to a pair of NCAA Division III National Tournaments�

The Pioneers were ranked in the top-20 in the D3hoops�com poll throughout the past four seasons, highlighted by a 2014-15 campaign in which Marietta was ranked in the top five for several weeks midseason, before finishing 28-4 after advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time in team history. With Marietta, Kenney was responsible for organization, distribution, and breakdown of film scouting, overseeing all recruiting, coordinating travel arrengements, assisting with strength and conditioning programs, monitoring the team's academic performance, and assisting the head coach will all day-to-day operations, including game and practice planning�

Prior to Marietta, Kenny worked for two seasons as a student assistant on the men's basketball staff at Division-I University of Dayton. With the Flyers, he was integral in the team's video scouting of opponents, as well in overseeing the filming of all Dayton games and practices. He also assisted in the planning, organization, and recruitment of youth athletes to the Flyers' boys basketball camps and clinics�

Kenney graduated from Dayton in 2011 with a B�S� in education, majoring in sports management and minoring in leadership� He then went on to earn a Masters in Coaching Education from Ohio University�

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence� Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster in addition to Earlham College as an affiliate member — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be

sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards.

Significantly, all nine NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities� Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored�

A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart�

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics� The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose� Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years� This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference�

The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country� The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

In 1995, local Meadville artist Kevin Pipp captured 100 years of Allegheny basketball with a collage of various Gator greats�

Listed from left to right along the top row are: Maurice “Rink” Kofford ‘22, two-year captain and namesake for the team’s top academic award; Eugene “Bud” McIndoe ‘53, the first Gator to score 1,000 career points; Dick Baker ‘08, captain of Allegheny’s first undefeated team; Bob DelGreco ‘76 cutting down the net after Allegheny’s first PAC Championship in 1975; and Terry Gray ‘87, who holds the record for career games played and captained the 1986-87 team to a school record 24 wins�

The three faces in the middle row include: John Reynders ‘75, former player and Allegheny’s all-time winningest coach; Raymond Shafer ‘38, 1937-38 team captain who would go on to serve as Governor of Pennsylvania; and Samuel Lampe ‘02, who is often described as “The Father of Allegheny Basketball�”

James Johnston ‘60, who holds the school’s single-game scoring record with 53 points; Garret Daggett ‘89, the 1989 NCAC Player of the Year; Norm Sundstrom, coach and Athletic Director credited with building the program into a consistent winner; and William Faloon ‘41, 1941 team captain are pictured along the bottom�

The first basketball game pitting Allegheny against a non-college group took place on Feb� 28, 1896� Howard Burge, Allegheny’s Physical Director from 1895-98, organized a contest between a group of Allegheny players and a team from Meadville called the Olympian Club� The contest was played at the Taylor Hose Gymnasium, the only suitable facility in Meadville at the time� The game is described in this excerpt from the following morning’s Meadville Tribune-Republican: “The Olympian club basket ball team of the Stone Church, measured strength at the Taylor Hose Gymnasium last evening with the Allegheny college team in the presence of a large and enthusiastic audience� Although the Olympian lads struggled manfully to win, they were overmatched by the college boys and the ball nestled snugly in the Olympians basket 19 times during which the Olympians were able to lodge it twice in Allegheny’s basket�”

On March 7, 1903, Allegheny dropped a 21-15 decision to Westminster in Montgomery Gym� Following that loss, eight years passed before a visiting team would again beat Allegheny on its home court� The streak included victories over Syracuse, Yale, and Ohio State� After 58 consecutive home wins, Ohio Wesleyan ended Allegheny’s streak, 18-16, on March 18, 1911�

Arguably the best basketball squad in Allegheny’s long history, the 1907-08 team went 12-0 to carve itself a place in the record books as the school’s only undefeated team� Captained by Dick Baker, the Gators routinely doubled-up the competition, and topped the 40-point mark six times while holding the opposition below 20 points in all but two games�

From 1956-60, James Johnston usually led the Gators in scoring� On March 3, 1959, he accomplished a feat that remains a single-game marvel, as he scored 53 points on 17 field goals and 19 free throws, pacing Allegheny to a 109-106 win over Edinboro�

On February 12, 1983, the Gators faced Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh in what figured to be another battle in the long rivalry between the two squads� The game turned into one of the Gators’ most thrilling - and exhausting - ever, as the two squads battled through a then-NCAA record five overtimes before the Taratns eked out an 81-76 win.

The late 1980s was one of the most exciting periods in the history of Allegheny basketball� The Gators grabbed at least a share of the NCAC title four consecutive years with a combined conference record of 40-6 while advancing to the NCAA Tournament three straight years� Forward Garret Daggett, known for his thunderous dunks, helped close out the decade in style as he propelled the Gators to a sweep of the regular-season and conference tournament titles while becoming the first player in team history to earn NCAC Player of the Year honors�

ELEVENTH CONFERENCE TITLEIn 1998, Allegheny captured its 11th conference championship after defeating Case Western Reserve, Wittenberg, and Wooster en route to the NCAC tournament title� Led by Mike Hous-er, Jerry Ambooken, and Ben Shulz, the Gators defeated Baldwin-Wallace, 97-88, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, before falling in a close game on the road at Hope College�

GREG RICHARDS ‘08 MEMORIAL TIP-OFF CLASSIC

On Nov� 21-22, the Allegheny men’s and women’s basketball teams will host the Fourth Annual Greg Richards ‘08 Memorial Tip-Off Classic at the David V� Wise Center�

Four men’s and four women’s games will be played on the second weekend of the 2015-16 campaign in memory of Greg Richards, a 2008 Allegheny grad and four-year member of the Gator men’s basketball team, who lost his battle with cancer in February 2012� The tournament provides Allegheny an opportunity to celebrate Greg’s life, and bring together those who loved him most on the eve of the new season. All ticket proceeds will benefit the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, while donations will also be accepted throughout the weekend�

“Greg was a really special part of not just the basketball team, but also the entire Allegheny community,” said Portia Hoeg, Allegheny Director of Athletics & Recreation� “We are extremely grateful to Greg’s family and friends who help make this great event possible each year�”

On the men’s side, Adrian College (Mich�), SUNY-Fredonia, and Case Western Reserve University will join the Gators, while the women’s field includes Carnegie Mellon University, Muskingum University, and Westminster College.

On day one of the classic, Fredonia and Case Western Reserve tip off play at 2 p.m., followed by the Carnegie Mellon and Muskingum women at 4 p�m� The Gator men will face Adrian at 6 p�m�, while the Gator women close the day with an 8 p�m� meeting against Westminster�

On Sunday, the schedule includes the Fredonia and Adrian men at 1 p�m�, Muskingum and Westminster women at 3 p�m�, the Allegheny and Case Western Reserve men at 5 p�m�, and the Gator women against Carnegie Mellon at 7 p�m�

GATOR GAMEDAY COVERAGE

The Allegheny College office of athletic communications provides complete information and media services for the College’s 22 varsity athletic programs. The office is responsible for all media and public relations pertaining to the school’s athletic programs, producing all official department publications, maintaining the school’s athletics website, statistical and historical record keeping, photography archiving, video and audio streaming of athletic events, and other pomotional activities regarding Gator athletics. The office of athletic communications is located on the fourth floor of the David V. Wise Center, room 410�

MEDIA CREDENTIALS Media credentials are available through the athletic communications office by contacting Jim Berger (jberger@allegheny�edu/(814) 332-5952)� We ask that if you plan on attending the game in a working capacity to please notify the office no later than 24 hours before gametime� Space for working media members is available at the courtside scorer’s table and at work stations on the concourse level above the court, where there are also accommodations (high speed internet/phone line) for visiting broadcasters�

INTERVIEWS Interviews of Allegheny College student-athletes and coaches should be arranged through the office of athletic communications� Following games, the locker rooms will be closed, but coaches and players will be made available for interviews upon request�

STATISTICS/GAMEDAY INFORMATION Rosters and game programs will be distributed to all working media members prior to each game� Statistics will be printed out and distributed at both halftime and at the conclusion of each game, and can also be disbused during the game per request on during stoppages of play� Prior to the game, complete team and statistical information can be accessed online through the Allegheny athletic website at http://www�alleghenygators�com

RADIO/PHONE LINES Requests from visiting media for broadcast phone lines should be made with the athletic communications office no later than 48 hours before gametime� All working media members will have access to wireless internet�
