SCHEDULE

Coach/Career record: Mike Nate, 28-19

Years coaching sport/at cur-rent school: Sixth year

Last year’s record/place in conference: 8-2, Lakeland Conference co-champs

Key starters lost: Trevor Jones, Trent Moskwinski, Alec and Colin Nichols, Cory Kat-terhienrich, Ken Laurita, Jake Wright, Vincent Sallee, Jacob Yuhas, Brandon Earles

Key returning lettermen: Andrew Duckett, Marty Ward, Charlie Rodriguez, Jake Szili-agyi, Matt Kline, Austin Knapp,

Vinny Peel, Zach Schmidt

Top newcomers: Seth Brown, Nick Martin, Sam Burge

Strengths: Our running backs. Duckett is a threat to both throw and run. Ward and Peel are both good running backs. Schmidt is solid as a kicker.

Weaknesses: We have to get better in the trenches. We got hit hard by graduation on the offensive line, so we need to get better there.

What do you think of your conference? The schedule is tougher. We also have tough games at Mendon, Cass and

Buchanan. It is good to up-grade the schedule. There are no weaklings in the playoffs.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? Nathan Hechtl has been a surprise. He is 6-1, 220 pounds. He has really sur-prised me as a football player. He is going to step it up. Role players last year are going to be key players for us this year.

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We need to get better at the run and the pass. We run two offenses, which is also tough. We are working to get better at both of them.

Coach predictions: SOCCER

Coach: Evan Winkler Years coaching sport/at cur-rent school: Fifth year Last year’s record/place in conference: Third in Lakeland Conference Key starters lost: None

Key returning lettermen: Return 9 of 11 of our starting lineup — Zach Schmidt (all-con-ference), Dominic Stella (all-con-ference), Andrew Boocher, Blake Lerner, Steve Mugenzi Top newcomers: Austin Knapp,

Kudzai Nygsyvivso, Sean Dan-ner Strengths: Experience, as we have seven senior starters and return 9 of 11 starters. We also have some solid subs coming of the bench this year. Weaknesses: Learning to play a complete game and doing the little things well were what hurt us last year so hopefully we can turn that into a strength this year. What do you think about your conference? The conference is going to be tough this year as there are a lot of teams and a lot

of quality depth. Top two teams are LMC and Bridgman. What have you seen from your team so far that has sur-prised? Nothing really. I expect-ed us to work hard and be able to compete against any team we play this year and so far I like what I have seen in practice and in our scrimmage the other day. What intangibles will be need-ed to push your team over the top? If we can do the little things well, be mentally tough, play to-gether and continue to work hard in practice we will be a danger-ous team.

Boys Soccer

Coach: Jim Murray

Years coaching sport/at current school: 48 – boys, 45 — girls

Last year’s record/place in conference:Boys: 2-1 duals, runner-up Lakeland Conference; Girls: 1-2 duals, tied for third Lakeland Conference

Key starters lost: Tyler Danner and Mi-chael Robbins

Key returning lettermen: Boys: James Harrell (Jr.) and Joshua Youngs (Jr.)Girls: Alexis Garcia (Soph.)

Top newcomers: Boys: Matt Probst (Frosh.); Girls: Amber Boecher (Frosh.)

Strengths: Have potential top runners.

Weaknesses: Few numbers, inexperi-ence.

What do you think about your confer-ence?: New conference setup, no duals and three jamborees to determine every-thing. Merger of three conferences and I am not really familiar with several of the teams. Mendon from the St. Joe Valley should be right there with Bridgman for the title. Girls is all up in the air.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? A poor summer of running. Those that did had a good summer and are ready.

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? Need more runners.

BRANDYWINEBobcatsCoach predictions: VOlleyball

Coach: Carrie Bidwell

Years coaching sport/at current school: Ninth year coaching, third year at Brandywine

Key starters lost: Brooke Smith will not be playing volleyball this year in order to continue her injury rehabilita-tion and prepare for basketball.

Key returning lettermen: Abbey Cole, Sydney Carlson, Olivia DePriest, Emily Erwin

Top newcomers: Alyssa Bolen, Ra-chael Szilagyi

Strengths: The Brandywine varsity volleyball team is very athletic and extremely versatile in the positions the players are able to play. It is a great group of student athletes that come to practice and competitions ready to learn and wanting to win. Each player works very hard at improving her in-dividual game, while also focusing on the betterment of the overall team.

Weaknesses: Very few of the play-ers on this team are “volleyball only” players. Many are multisport athletes

and spend the volleyball offseason playing other sports. While this is beneficial in their overall athletic readiness, it is taking a little longer to get the players back to the volleyball game mentally and physically.

What do you think about your con-ference? I am very excited about the expanding conference. I look forward to competing against a broader vari-ety of teams and players.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? I knew this was a great group of young ladies, both in their athletic ability and with their amazing attitudes. I have been surprised by just how willing they all are to learn and play different positions and do whatever they can to make the team better. Their “the team comes first” attitude is very refresh-ing.

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? Our team this year is small in size and small in number of players. We need to be prepared to play with aggres-sion and intensity from the beginning of the game to the end.

Coach predictions: TENnis

Coach/Career record: David Sidenbender, 36-32

Years coaching sport/at current school: Eighth year

Last year’s record/place in conference: 9-2, three-time Lakeland Conference champion, first ever Division 4 — Regional champion

Key starters lost: Kyle Duncan, Michael Rob-bins

Key returning lettermen: Chance Smith (region-al champ), Tanner Bourdon (regional champ), Matt Vaughn, Cole Searles, Austin Balos, Mark Conrad (Regional champ)

Top newcomers: Caleb Cole (Frosh.), Jon Gamble (Jr.), Chandler Plew (Jr.)

Strengths: Experience

Weakness: Unknowns at lower flights

What do you think about your conference? No thoughts. We played in the KVA as well as the Lakeland so no real differences.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? I like the way we have come ready to compete.

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We just need to endure a tough early season schedule (Traverse City St. Francis, Paw Paw, South Bend St. Joe, Fort Wayne Dwenger, Kalamazoo Hackett)

Coach: Kristin Baker

Years coaching sport/at current school: Third year as the varsity coach

Key starters lost: Paul, exchange student from Germany on the boys side and Andi Frost on the girls side.

Key returning lettermen: The girls team returns its top runner in Brooke Wesner, while the boys top runner will not return as he was an exchange student. However returning lettermen Matt Mitchell and Hunter Crocker are strong at-tributes to the team.

Top newcomers: We have multiple newcomers on both the girls and boys team and are excited to see how they progress throughout the season.

Strengths: This will be the first time in many years that we should be able to score as a team on the guy’s side. I believe that this group is all close enough in ability that they will be able to pull each other

forward as they gain momentum in the season. The girls team has strength in the number of returning lettermen and that they are still a young team that will develop well as the season progresses.

Weaknesses: We continue to struggle with numbers on both sides. Yes we have more than we have the last few years, but still not the numbers you need to withstand injuries if we have them surface during the season. The girls side is already missing one of their top re-turning lettermen in Morgan Zelmer, who will sit out the season with an injury.

What do you think about your conference? We are excited to be a part of a new conference and are looking forward to the opportunity to compete in the jamborees.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised?“Excited to see the number of new comers showing up for practice and the amount of kids who seem to be similar in ability and able to push each other forward.

Coach predictions: Cross Country

Coach: Ryan Catalano

Years coaching sport/at current school: First year

Key starters lost: Kevin Dey, AJ Reed

Key returning lettermen: Alex Swem, Alex Martinez, Cade Vargo, Kobe Brown

Top newcomers: Benji Ganus. Jordan Brown

Strengths: Our biggest strengths would have to be the focus the team has to improve and to have a suc-cessful season. Committed players and great leadership from the two captains.

Weaknesses: Our weaknesses are more on the beginning of the sea-son, because I am a new coach at Buchanan and we are running things very differently with this group of players. So our biggest weakness is getting everyone ready for our mid-season and developing a comfort-able rhythm.

What do you think about your conference? We have a very tough conference with some very talented and competitive teams. But I also believe our team is one of them. It’s going to be a tough conference, but I believe it will be great with the teams we’re playing and the game experience will help come districts.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? The biggest thing that has sur-prised me preseason is the focus and determination this team has. They want to work hard and im-prove their game, so when it comes game time, they are in a comfort-able state of mind and aren’t intimi-dated by other tough teams we will be facing.

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? For our team to push over the top, we will need to maintain the focus and drive that we’ve had in all our practices and conditioning work-outs. If we stay focus and work our hardest game or practice, we will be a tough team in the conference.

VOLLEYBALL

TENNIS

Coach: Lisa Holok Years coaching sport/at cur-rent school: 10th year Last year’s record/place in conference: 33-11, first place Lakeland Conference Key starters lost: Rachel Bonek

Key returning lettermen: We have eight starters returning from last season, who all contribute to the teams success. Seniors Alexis Meahl,(all-conference 2013) Jada Meahl,(all-conference 2013) Clara Cornwell, and Chelsey Bennet. Franki Strefling (all-conference 2013 and named to the all-region team). Top newcomers: Taylor Strauss, Jade Mosier Strengths: We will be extremely tough at the net and we have many athletes who can play in multiple positions which will add to our overall competitiveness. With our experience continuing from last season we are able to pick up right where we left off last year.

Weaknesses: I really believe that this year is a huge mental year for us and we will have to push ourselves continually to reach the goals we have established. The sky is the limit this year.” What do you think about your conference? We are really excit-ed to play in the new conference. Typically Mendon and Bronson are tough volleyball teams, so that will just help strengthen our schedule and we look forward to competing.” What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? I love that this team knows the game so well and we have the skill and competitiveness to push through a lot. I have been excited for the tenacity I have seen in practice so far. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? Volleyball is a game of momentum so we will need to fo-cus on containing that momentum throughout the season. I know we are going to be ready to compete and accomplish some big things this season.

Coach: Erin Kratky

Years coaching sport/at current school: II have coached the girls Varsity tennis team for the past three years. This will be my first year coaching the boys team.

Key returning lettermen: Alex Lindamood, Christian Orphanitis, Ian Tyler, Josiah Smith, Lucas Bonek

Top newcomers: Jaxon Rehmel, Mark Mcclaran

Strengths: This team has a lot of heart. It is awesome to see their passion and love for the game. They are driven to learn the sport and improve their game.

Weaknesses: There are quite a few new-comers to the game this year that have never picked up a racket. However, they

have amazing poten-tial and are excited to learn everything they can.

What have you seen from your team so far that has sur-prised? The team’s dedication is amazing.

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? I’m really excited for my first year coaching the boy’s team. They are a great bunch of guys.

CassopolisRangers

Coach: Austin Francis

Years coaching sport/at current school: First year

Key starters lost: We are focused on the future.

Key returning lettermen: Dylan Armstrong, Garrett Green, Matt Locke, Colin Kelley, and Jordan Edwards

Top newcomers: We have eight freshmen with quite a bit of speed.

Strengths: We have a ton of speed, which we can use to our advantage and a group of juniors that have quality playing experi-ence and are already stepping up to be great leaders. They have a burning fire to point our program

in the right direction. Plus, all of the players want to get better and are easily coachable. Our parents, athletic director, school and com-munity are fully supportive and that makes my job a ton easier.

Weaknesses: Our weakness at the moment is how young we are and that we don’t have much in numbers. Most games we will only have three or four subs and that is if everyone is healthy. And it is not that our young guys are intimidat-ed by any means; but just being able to understand formations, implement strategies, and execute effectively is taking some time.

What do you think about your conference? I believe the new structuring of the conference will allow us to be competitive.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? Our young freshmen play a lot more aggressive at this level than I anticipated, which is exactly what we need them to do and our mostly upperclassmen defense is a tough group.

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? Honestly, the talent is here already. We just need more time playing and working together as a team and getting touches on the ball. The chemistry will come with time and I believe our conference will be amazed by the improve-ment they will see in our team from the beginning to the end of our season. Once we gel together and things start clicking we will be hard to stop.

Coach predictions: soccer

Coach/career record: Ray Prestly, 18-50-9

Years coaching sport/at current school: Third year

Last year’s record/place in conference: 16-19-3, Fourth in the Lakeland Conference

Key starters lost: Logan Lawson and Tyei-sha Fuller

Key returning lettermen: Kortenei Suggs. Kaylyn Forrest, Tori Baker, Madeline Ruff, Janye Butts, Michelle Green, Jamie Suse-land, Marissa Waldschmidt and Rachelle Williams

Strengths: All returning players from last year

Weaknesses: Communication

What do you think about your confer-ence? We are very excited about the new BCS conference.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? This year they are showing great leadership with more drive and determination.

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? I have to keep them focused and communicating with each other.

Coach predictions

Coach: Marty McGinn

Years coaching sport/at current school: First year

Last year’s record/place in conference: Last place. We were just happy to have a team.

Key starters lost: Stuart Ayers

Key returning lettermen: Emily Cutting, Melody Cutting, Monica Ward, Jacqueline Kelley-Cogdell, Alexis Holloway, Cassy Pflug, Eric Bosler, Dillon Richey

Top newcomers: Amy Adams, David Kelly

Strengths: These athletes have good attitudes and good grades. The best students in our school run cross country. This group wants to run each morning. They aren’t afraid of hard work. They aren’t afraid to stand out and be different from their peers. They are leaders in our school.

Weaknesses: Our best students sometimes spread themselves too thin. They are busy work-ing jobs after school, playing in band, involved in FFA and robotics, and even other sports. There is no way around it, in cross country, you have to put in the miles in order to succeed. And miles take time, energy and commitment.”

What do you think about your conference? Our new conference is an improvement on last year’s conference because it has more teams and more meets.”

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? This group doesn’t give up. They aren’t afraid to try something new. They run very well together as a team.”

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We need to remain healthy and focused. We will work hard and put in the miles and we’ll see what happens in October.

Coach: Dan Vandenheede

Years coaching sport/at current school: First year at Dowagiac, previous 11 years as girls coach at Niles

Key starters lost: Jennifer Schaus

Key returning lettermen: Katy Murphy and Jackie Hurle, DeYonte Sullivan, Jacob Chap-man and William Phillips

Top newcomers: Marcus Win-chester Jones is running for the first time (sophomore), hoping to get some Freshmen once they come in for orientation.

Strengths: DeYonte and Mar-cus have great potential.

Weaknesses: Trying to get

numbers up and I just took over as coach a few weeks ago so athletes don’t have a lot of base miles on them going into season.

What do you think about your conference? From watching in the past I know there will be a lot of teams. I am hoping we can compete with Paw Paw and a few others.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? Willingness to work, even though many are relatively out of shape due to lack of a base.

What intangibles will be need-ed to push your team over the top? The team has to adopt a competitive attitude, which has been missing for many in the program.

Key starters lost: Madison Proshwitz

Key returning lettermen:Kelsey Smith (Jr.)Hailee Green (Soph.)Ally Wild (Sr.)

Top newcomers: Ally Hale (Frosh.), Kenzie Hassle (Soph.), Allysa Allen (Jr.), Heather Olson (Jr.)

Strengths: We have good numbers for the first time in a while. We have 10 girls play-ing golf this fall.

Weaknesses: We are very inexperienced. Of the 10 girls playing, only three have experience and most are just

taking up golf.

What do you think about your conference? I don’t know what to expect from our conference. I know a couple of the other coaches that have been doing it for a number of years and they have much more experience than us.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? The number of girls out was a pleasant sur-prise. The girls are anxious to learn and are asking a lot of questions.

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? The girls will need to relax and do their best. We need to get as much practice time in as we can because they have a lot

What do you think about your confer-ence? We have one of the toughest soccer conferences in the state. Several teams from our conference make state runs every year. This helps prepare us for districts.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? Not too many surprises. I know these kids well and have worked with them for several years. They are continuing to grow and get better ev-ery day. We have a bright future with this group of kids. We will gauge success on improvement and district performance.

Key returning lettermen: Dante

Razanno, Jackson Gaideski,Tyler Lutz, Zach Plummer, Bent Robert-son, Dustin Vires

Top newcomers: Isaiah Miller, Mason Tinch

Strengths: The Eddies’ strength this year lies in the offensive back-field. We have a mixture of speed, strength and quickness. Dante Razzano is very efficient at running the quarterback spot and is a threat to run or throw. The defensive line of Tyler Lutz, Mason Tinch and Zach Plummer is also very good. Experi-ence in the defensive backfield with Razzano and Gaideski is also good.

Weaknesses: The offensive line lost a lot of players to graduation. We have several positions that need to be filled by small, less experi-enced players. Our overall depth in all positions is also a weakness.

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? For the Eddies to be successful this season, the offensive line and the linebackers will have to show a lot of improvement throughout the year. It is important that we stay healthy and develop younger players to use as backups. We will need to use our quarterback as more of a weapon both running and throwing the ball.

Weaknesses: Not as much depth with boy team numbers. What do you think about your confer-ence? It’s a tough conference especially on the girls side. Ot-sego and Vicksburg have a lot of talent back from last year and will be very tough to beat.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? Girls numbers are very good and continue to grow. Great attitude from entire squad. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We need to have that competive edge. Some people are very competitive by nature and have that killer instinct, others have a more laid back per-sonality and run more for the social aspect and overall positive health benefits running brings.

With the addi-tion of Paw Paw to our

division, it is a tough conference. The East side has generally been stronger, but I don’t think that will be the case this year. Paw Paw is tough and South Haven is always very tough. Berrien Springs, Coloma and Dowagiac can play well enough to knock off anyone on any given day. With that said, our goal is to be playing for a conference champion-ship this year. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised?Team camaraderie is strong. Team effort has been great. There is a real grit about this team — an attitude of never giving up. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We will need to play a complete 80 minutes every game to reach our goals. We have to be a complete team this year. If we play as one unit, not as individuals, we will be hard to beat.

Strengths: The attitude for all players has been great. They all went to get better.

Weaknesses: We are young in singles with no much experience in two flights.

What do you think about your conference? It is a strong tennis conference. Paw Paw is strong in the West and Sturgis and Allegan are very strong in the East.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? It is still early, but all the players have worked really hard in practice to prepare for the upcoming season.

Years coaching sport/at cur-rent school: Third year

Last year’s record/place in conference: 20-12-6, fourth place in SMAC

Key starters lost: Miranda Baker, Lashonda Greene, Kierra Fillwock, Maggie Hoff, Olivia Jordan

Key returning lettermen: Kelsey Barton, Lexi Smith, Jazmin Brann, Courtney Nixon, Megan Kohler, Meagan Kelley

Top newcomers: Holly WalkerBella Rasler, Bre Love, Kylie Morris, Alex Bailey, Elyse Zim-merman

Strengths: Even though we lost five seniors, we have various experienced starters who are ready to step it up and help lead

our younger players.

Weaknesses: We are an ex-tremely young but very athletic team. My returners are experi-enced, and despite having to fill the shoes of five seniors, they are all working hard together.

What do you think about your conference? I think we have one of the toughest confer-ences in the state of Michigan. During the season, we usu-

ally have anywhere between one and four teams which are ranked in the top 10 in Class A in the state.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? Their athleticism and ability to play at a high level. Both my returners and my younger plays are incredibly strong athletes. Our versatility has also surprised me. I have various girls who can play all

the way around and shift to dif-ferent positions when needed.

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? Physically, we are strong and ready to com-pete. Mentally, however, with so many new/young players on our team, we will have to work hard mentally to learn to play as a team. They are going to have to put in the time to build respect and trust for each other.

Coach predictions: SOCCER

Coach: Danny Rodts

Years coaching sport/at current school: First year

Last year’s record/place in conference:9-9-2

Key returning lettermen: Sammy Rodts (Sr.), Nick Suckle (Sr.), Sheldon Mudd (Jr.), Dylan Fillwock (Jr.), Caden Hullinger (Jr.), Mika Farinella (Jr.), Jake Brawley (Jr.)

Top newcomers: Alex Jasper (Soph.), Mitchell Park (Soph.), Ben Florkowski (Soph.), Ian Daly (Soph.)

Strengths: Defense is our team strength.

We have a group of players who play club soccer throughout the year — Mudd, Rodts, Fillwock, Jasper, Farinella, Braw-ley. With their experience, knowledge and skills, I expect our strong suit to be displayed on defense. Our offense has the possibility of being solid, pending the abil-ity for our young players to grow and build upon what good qualities they already have.

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top?Of course our district is always on the hori-zon. It will be a challenge for the players to compete each game, but if they challenge themselves every practice and every game, then they have the ability to be in every game.

Coach: Joseph (Tony) Todd Years coaching sport/at current school: Fourth year Last year’s record/place in conference: Fifth place in SMAC Key starters lost: None Key returning lettermen: Charles Leonard (Sr.), Noah Hall (Sr.), Samuel Burck (Jr.), Brenden Hall (Soph.), Chris Ahlgrim (Sr.)

Top newcomers: Devin Tomlinson (Frosh.), Andrew Flick (Soph.), Cade Stephenson (Soph.), Hunter Greenman (Soph.) Strengths: Young team with a lot of potential. What do you think about your conference? Very strong. You have the cream of the crop when it comes to running with St. Joe and the other teams are also top notch. What have you seen

from your team so far that has surprised? More dedication. There is lots of fight in them and a will to win. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We have one of the best freshman to ever come through the program in Devin Tom-linson. He will need to have a big season, but our returning team must compete at a higher level.

Coach (career record): Jami Foster, 9-6

Years coaching sport/at current school: Third year

Last year’s record/place in conference: 4-3, fourth place in conference

Key starters lost: Abigail Gaines, Ellie Burch

Key returning lettermen: Chelsea Best, Kylee Myer, Hannah Walker

Top newcomers: Kailey Skarbeck

Strengths: We have a group of girls who work hard and because of their work ethic their individual times will continue to improve throughout the season.

What do you think about your conference? Our division is strong. St. Joe, Lakeshore and Portage Northern are extremely good running schools.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? I have been pleasantly surprised with their times at the beginning of the season.

What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We are going to be a competi-tive team this year, but right now, I am missing that one runner that will place in the top five of a meet. Those times are usually in the 19s and low 20s.
