    1. Entry to Korea

    (1) Entry Date

You should enter Korea no later than August 29th, 2013. Suggested period of entry is between August 27th and August29th. A staff from your language institution or degree institution will pick you up at the airport. If your entry is delayed beyond the deadline, you will not longer be qualified for this scholarship. Furthermore, your entry in 2014 will not be accepted for any reason.

    (2) Passport

You should apply for a passport in person at the relevant authorities (Korean missions) in your home country.

    (3) Visa

After obtaining a passport, you should directly apply for a visa for entrance into Korea at the appropriate consular section of the Korean embassy in your home country. Along with the required documents which should be authenticated by contacting the aforementioned consular section, please bring the invitation issued by the Korean government scholarship program and/or an admission letter from the university. Different visa status will be assigned according to the purpose of entry into Korea; a short-term visa(D-4) is issued to take a Korean language course. On the other hand, students who are entering a degree institution in September 2013 must have on hand an acceptance letter from their selected universities, and then apply for a D-2 visa. A visa for entrance into Korea is to be obtained only in Korean embassies outside Korea; D-class visas are NOT issued upon arrival. Finally, students who are coming to Korea via another country because there is no direct flight from their country of residence, should also apply for a visa of transit for that country. You had better inquire the transit country of the transit visa directly because it varies depending on the countries.

    2. Graduate School Study

    (1) Graduate Schools in Korea Master's or Doctoral Degree Course : Most Korean universities have curriculums for

master's and doctoral degree courses. In general, master's courses take two years and doctoral courses take three years. That is to say, masters candidates usually earn credits for 3 semesters and write dissertations in the 4th semester, while doctoral students earn credits for 4 semesters and write dissertations in the 5th and 6th semesters.

The grantee should apply for admission to a graduate school where the classes are conducted during the daytime, NOT to a specialized graduate school whose classes are conducted at night or during the vacation period, or through a distant learning circuit (i.e. online study courses).

Extension of scholarship : Master's program grantees may apply for a six-month extension of their scholarship period only once, while doctorate program grantees may apply for a six-month extension up to a maximum of two times. However, grantees who were mandated to take the six-month additional Korean language course are automatically disqualified to apply for the aforementioned six-month extension. For example, a master's program grantee who will have taken the additional language course will be disqualified from applying for his/her scholarship extension. A doctorate program grantee who will have taken the additional language course will be qualified to apply for a six-month extension only once.

    (2) Application Qualification Students applying for master's courses must have a bachelor's degree, and those applying

for doctoral courses must have a master's degree. According to some universities, they also require the minimum level of Korean or English language proficiency.

    (3) Admission Procedures All the grantees must gain admission from a university before entering Korea after

being selected as a successful candidate. You can begin your degree program after completing a year of Korean language course and passing at least level 3 in TOPIK for your degree program.

Grantees recommended by a Korean university begin their degree program at their recommended university.

Grantees recommended by a Korean embassy, a government department, or an adoption association begin their degree program at the university of their choice that

  • - 32 -

they gain an admission to. All the grantees must take a year of Korean language course, except those who have

passed at least level 5 in TOPIK. They are able to begin their degree courses from September 2013 (Fall Semester) by permission of NIIED.

During the six-month Korean language course, grantees who pass at least level 5 in TOPIK are able to start their degree course earlier from March 2014 (Spring Semester) by permission of NIIED.

During the one-year Korean language course, grantees who pass at least level 3 in TOPIK before the completion of the language course can start their degree course from September 2014 (Fall Semester). The grantees who fail to pass level 3 must take the additional six-month Korean language course.

Grantees who satisfy the TOPIK requirement will get the permission from NIIED to register and start their degree course under the guidance of their university international office.

Change of university is not allowed in any cases during the whole scholarship period. Changing majors/fields of study is also basically not allowed. However, in unavoidable

cases, permission may be granted provided a mutual agreement between the departments concerned within the university is reached, with the scholarship period unchanged. However, quitting a program and then applying for a new program is not permitted.

    (4) Following admission According to the schedule set by the university, you should follow the proper

procedures necessary for registration and orientation. Registration : Tuition fee is waived. However, the student association fee and other

fees are to be paid by the grantee. Orientation: General information on academic affairs and study at the university is

provided, so make sure that you do not miss it. Registration of courses: If you want to cancel a course after registering some

courses, it must be done within the designated period. And check that all cancellation have been made correctly.

You should apply for the extension of visa or for the change of visa status at the immigration office in person.

    (5) Studying at the University Classes : Some departments in certain schools offer courses in English. However,

most classes in Korean universities are conducted in Korean.

  • - 33 -

Registration : In general, students must register for the semester two to three weeks prior to the commencement of the semester. Korean Government scholarship Grantees are exempt from paying tuition fees. However, other expenses, such as the alumni association fee, student association fee, etc., must be paid by the grantee.

Course Registration : Students must register for courses each semester. If a student decides to cancel a course it must be done within the time allocated by each school (usually within the first two or three weeks of the semester). It is important to check that all cancellations have been made completely and correctly. If the course has not been canceled correctly and the student does not attend the classes, a grade 'F' will be given at the end of the semester.

Essential notices and announcements are regularly posted on university web-sites. You are advised to log onto it periodically. For inquiries about administrative matters, please contact a person in charge of the relevant administrative department or an assistant of the department you are enrolled in.

    (6) Grade System Universities use a general format for grading students though it is slightly different

among universities. Here is a general grading system:

    A+, A, A- : With Honors B+, B, B- : Average C+, C,, C- : Poor D+, D, D- : Very Poor F : Failure

    (7) Graduation Requirements Scores and Credits : You should confirm the number of required credits by yourself;

credit requirements differ from university to university. In general, master's students must complete at least 2427 credits. Doctorate students must complete at least 36 credits. The percentage of major subjects that must be taken varies for each subject and

each school. Therefore, before registering courses and subjects, counselling with your academic advisor would be helpful for you.

The average score required for graduation also varies for each school. The student with the school record of less than 80 out of 100 points are not qualified to submit a thesis.

Thesis Examination (Comprehensive Subject Tests) : Most schools require students to

  • - 34 -

pass an examination before submitting their thesis. The exam may also include a Korean language test, even if all classes are taken in English.

Writing a Thesis : In principle, a thesis should be written in Korean. However, if the university or the field of major requires an English thesis, more than 10 pages of the Korean abridgment is to be submitted.

Thesis Review Fee : Most schools charge for reviewing the thesis. The fee must be paid by you. The cost is usually between 100,000 and 200,000 won. Art departments, such as music or fine arts, may incur more expenses. These expenses also must be borne by you.

Reimbursement of thesis printing fee : After printing the thesis, you can request to the university for the reimbursement along with following documents. NIIED supports the actual amount of printing fee once between 500,000 and 800,000 won. It is offered only when you submit the required documents after thesis completion.

III. Guide for Life in Korea

    1. Accommodation

    (1) Dormitory Each university has its own accommodation which provides rooms for those who are

pursuing their degrees. The average cost for a university dormitory room for two persons, including food, is between 300,000 and 500,000 won monthly. Your dormitory fee will be deducted from your living allowance. You are recommended to make an inquiry to your international office about the dormitory information because the fee amount varies from university to university.

    (2) Boarding Houses & Rental Houses If you don't want to live in a university dormitory, you can choose to live in a

boarding house or a rental house. Boarding Houses : There are many boarding houses in the neighborhoods that encircle

Koreas universities. Boarding houses usually provide Korean meals for breakfast and dinner. Bathroom facilities are usually shared. A shared room costs about 400,000~500,000 won per month.

Rental Houses or Apartments : It is very expensive to rent a house or an apartment in a major city such as Seoul. Costs vary considerably depending on the location. There are two methods in renting accommodation in Korea, either by monthly payments or by paying a large deposit.

Monthly Rental : A studio (a one-room apartment) usually costs around 500,000 won per month. A small refundable deposit may also be required. Monthly payments are not refunded.

Deposit Method : On average, a 50 million won deposit is required for a studio. This deposit is fully refundable after the contract period expires.

    2. Meals In most campus cafeterias/restaurants, breakfast, lunch and dinner are served. A meal

usually costs 3,0004,000 won. Otherwise, there are usually plenty of restaurants located

  • - 36 -

around the universities. Chinese, Japanese and Western style restaurants as well as Korean restaurants are abundant and easy to find. Convenience stores, fast-food outlets, and snack bars are also common. In general, boarding students are recommended to have their meals at a dormitory cafeteria. Cooking is not allowed in most dormitories, except in the family dormitories. However, some university dormitories have a public kitchen for their resident students. You may make inquiries regarding this at your universitys international office.

    3. Clothing Korea has four distinct seasons: very hot summers, very cold winters and mild weather

in spring and autumn. Students should prepare adequately for each season with light cool clothing for the summer and heavy warm clothing for the winter, as well as something for in-between.

Temperature December January: Very cold, below 0 February March: Cold , below 10 April May: Warm, between 15and 25 June August: Very hot, above 25 September November: Warm, between 15 and 25

    4. Transportation Public transportation in Seoul is usually cheap, convenient and easy to use. Comprised

of 9 lines, the subway can be taken to almost any spot around the city. The basic subway fare is 1,150 won. In case of using a traffic card, the fare is 1,050 won. and it may cost a little more for cities on the outskirts of Seoul.

There are four types of buses in Seoul. Standard buses have only a few seats and cost 1,200 won. The other type of bus has a lot more seats and has less stops than the standard bus and costs 1,900 or 2,100won. The fare is discounted by using a traffic card. Buses traveling to outskirt cities may be more expensive.

Taxis are easy to use. The basic fare for a standard taxi varies with regions but it normally starts from 2,400 won in Seoul. Between 12 p.m. and 4 a.m. taxi fares increase by 20%. Black taxis (Mobum taxi) are more expensive than the standard taxis. Tipping is not usual in Korea and is not necessary when taking a taxi. Students may

  • - 37 -

drive in Korea but it is not recommended as traffic is very heavy in Seoul. It is usually much more convenient to use public transportation.

    5. Safety Seoul is a fairly safe city. Possessions of handguns, knives and other weapons are

prohibited, and acts of violence are uncommon. There are usually no problems taking the subway or walking around the city late at night. However, it is a good idea to take precautions against pickpockets in crowded areas. On a related note, using or dealing in any form of narcotic drugs is strictly prohibited in Korea.

    6. Insurance All grantees are insured by their host universities from the 1st of September. NIIED

provides grantees with 20,000 won per month for their insurance fee, and grantees can be covered by regulations on insurance contract, which universities sign with insurance companies.

When disease occurs after entering Korea, according to the insurance policy, the medical

fee is to be paid by the student first, which will then be reimbursed by the insurance company later. Students may apply for the reimbursement of the medical fee via his/her university or directly to the insurance company. However, it is important to remember that it will take longer to get reimbursed via the university as additional time is needed for the university to forward the relevant documents to the insurance company. Finally, it is recommended that grantees inquire and confirm the range of insurance compensation with their universitys international office in advance, as there may be important distinctions in the insurance terms offered by different insurance companies.

Documents to be submitted : An application, A photocopy of bankbook (account

number shown), M.D.'s diagnosis, Receipt, other documents (upon request of the insurance company)
