    We always gather the

    kids and do an activity

    the week of Christmas.

    In the past we have

    done a sleigh ride,

    Christmas caroling and

    ice skating.

Our family likes to do a

    family camping trip. This

    year we are going to

    Jawbone. Ill take my jeep

    out to do some

    photography. My family

    rides motorcycles and such.

    This year, my whole family

is going to rent a beach

    house in Marin County. We

are only doing a small gift

    exchange. We try and

    always emphasize family

    time during the holidays.

    hats busier thanSantas workshop in

    December? ThePlacer Theatre Ballet!

No joking around forthis venerable organiza-tion. For the past threemonths every weekendhas been dedicated torehearsing some 125dancers from all overPlacer County into theclassic Christmas ballet drum roll please TheNutcracker.

Placer Theatre Ballet is aproduction companydedicated to the joy ofstorytelling through theart of dance. It welcomesdancers from throughoutthe region and its goal isto provide quality per-formance opportunitiesby offering aspiring youngdancers significant rolesalongside professional

artists. We have a great castthis year, said artisticdirector/choreographerShea Wing. We haveopen auditions and drewon talent from all overPlacer County.

Sheas organizationnotifies Placer Countydance studios of audi-tions and then winnowsthe hopefuls down by

degree of training and tal-ent to come up with thefinal Nutcracker cast. The chosen dancers thenhave rehearsals for threemonths. Granted not

everyone goes to everyrehearsal but its still along time for families tomind the calendar andschedule other activitiesaround the shows needs.

While all this rehearsingis going on the costumesare being considered,

altered to fit new dancersand some built fromscratch. The ballet has awarehouse of costumes todraw on but they wear outand so there is always anaddition or two or maybemore to be decided andconstructed.

Nearly everyone knowsat least one refrain fromthis Russian classic writ-ten by Pyotr Ilyich

Tchaikovsky in 1892. Theoriginal choreographywas by the revered MariusPetipa and Lev Ivanov.Wing doesnt pretend thatthe kids dancing in this

production are ready totackle Petipa. He tweaksthe choreography eachyear to suit the particularskill level of his corps deballet and principaldancers.

The policy is alwaysopen auditions, he said. There is no true compa-ny even though the samedancers may be cast yearafter year.

Busy as Wing may begetting things under con-trol for the opening of thisfamily tradition ballet, hetook time out to send thismessage to those whothink they might notenjoy a ballet or that hesi-

tate to take their childrenfor fear they will be bored.Live theatre and live

ballet are wonderfulthings, he said. If youdont experience themyou will never know whatyou are missing. Try it outjust one time with yourfamily, especially yourkids, and decide withthem if it is somethingthat is really just right for

    you after all.

Loomis resident NancyPrice took action when

she saw the bleak contrastof two newspaper stories opening doors: a multi-million dollar sports are-na and closing doors: alocal homeless shelterwithout funds. Nancy andher husband, Steve Price,a founding member ofPablo Cruise, asked for alittle bit of help from theirmusician friends to startthe Be the Change, Winter

And according to StevePrice, They rocked the

place, adding that, onehundred percent, everydime we raise, goes to ourtwo charities.

On Saturday, the Pricesare asking Loomis-areafriends and neighbors tobundle up the family andjoin the party under theglowingholidaylightsat the

Their handmade Christmas orna-ments have hung in the White Houseand the Governors mansion, but

you dont need to be a political bigwig toenjoy the fine craftsmanship of theselocal artisans.

Rick and Janet Nicholson, of Nichol-son Blown Glass, will open their studio tothe public for demonstrations duringtheir annual Holiday Open Studio heldon three weekends in December. Thereis no admission fee.

    We will be demonstrating throughoutthe day, said Janet Nicholson. We usu-ally do the bigger pieces in the morning;

toward the end of the day we tend towork on smaller things. Its somewhatdetermined by what we are working on.We just received an order from New Yorkfor an eight-piece wall sculpture.

New items this year include glass man-darins, created for the 20th anniversaryof the Mandarin Festival as gifts for thevolunteers. Old favorites include oil can-dles, wine stoppers, decanters and theever popular Christmas tree ornaments.

Its a fun tradition for people to comeand choose their ornaments, she said.

Nicholson Blown Glass is located onthe corner of Bell and Cramer roads, justoff Hwy. 49, in North Auburn.

    BY JUDY COOK

    SPECIAL TO GOLD COUNTRY MEDIA

In 2042, Handels Mes-siah will celebrate the300th anniversary of its

first performance. If youdo some fast math, thatmakes 2013 the 271stanniversary of this classicof English Oratorio music.Thats a long time for apiece of music, anymusic, to hang aroundand morph with the pass-

ing years but Handel hadit as they say and hisMessiah remains one ofthe most performedworks of Western choralmusic.

The Auburn Symphony, under the baton of Maes-tro Peter Jaffe, invites thepublic to join in what hasbecome a local traditionthat is enjoying its ownanniversary. This is the

25th year that the AuburnSymphony has presenteda Messiah Singalong.

Handel himself mightview with pleased surprise

the enduring appeal ofthis kickoff to the Christ-mas season. Yes, it is time,

friends one and all, toventure away from elec-

tronica and stow cellphones, tablets and otherjangling and distracting

oddments of our culture, pick up musical scores

and wend the path to thePlacer High School The-ater to participate, par-take of and otherwise rev-el in the Annual MessiahSingalong.

Huh? Singawhat? Tootrue. We are not schooledas a general rule to raiseour voices in unrehearsedsong in public places. Butthis tradition, this music,is so special and the Sym-

phony so attuned to mak-ing this a glorious partici-patory event that it wont

matter if your pipes arerusty, a little off-key or

even if you are just too, tooshy to start right in. Really. It wont matter. The singa-long is an event born forthe Messiah but also anecho of our not-so-distantpast, according to PeterJaffe.

Prior to prerecordedsound, the music of thepeople was made in thehome with a concert onlyas a special treat, Jaffe

said. It was not uncom-mon for a family to per-form together for each

others enjoyment and toenjoy making music as agroup, Jaffe said.

Robert Haswell, busi-ness manager of theAuburn Symphony, cred-its Jaffe for holding theSymphony together so itremains a mainstay of thecommunity and is stillaround to perform this25th edition of the Messi-ah Singalong.

    We have found that

people enjoy opening theconcert of traditionalChristmas Carols and wedo that with a wonderfulmedley, Haswell said.We recruit our choralsingers from manysources ... we also stratifyour audience to put thebass voices in one section, the sopranos in anotherand so forth. This is aninclusive event, a great

event for families as astart to the Christmas sea-son.

    If you want to relive

what Christmas mighthave been like in

Auburn a century ago,you wont want to missthe Old Town CountryChristmas.

Its all about family andkids and believing, saidLinda Robinson of theOld Town Business Asso-ciation. What I try to dowith Old Town CountryChristmas is bring in a lotof my childhood. We as

grandparents need to cre-ate those memories forour grandkids.

Just as they did yearsago, when families, friends and neighborswould gather in the townsquare to share the spirit,Old Town Auburn comesalive for two Saturdays inDecember with musicand dancing and kettlecorn and clam chowder,

the latter compliments ofthe Auburn Hook n Lad-der.

    The fire department is

    right up the street, and

weve been doing clamchowder in bread bowlsfor decades now, saidJohn Williamson, Auburn

    City Fire Department

captain. We only do it forCountry Christmas. Wesell out pretty much everyyear.

    So if chowders on your

radar, be sure to get thereearly. Each night beginswith a flag ceremony andsinging of the national

anthem, a tradition since2001.Its sort of a peaceful

way to begin, a momentof silence, Robinson said.

Next up is a brassensemble, representingthe Auburn CommunityConcert Band.

The Weimar Academywill perform, as well asstroll through Old Towncaroling. Not strolling, but

stepping in time, will bethe Thunderfoot Clog-gers, Country ScottishDancers and troupes

from In Sync and Pamelotdance studios. The bon-fire will be roaring, theSugar Plump Fairies willbe roaming and John thechimney sweep will makehis annual appearance.

But for Robinson, herfavorite part is when shepulls out the great big sto-rybook, sits in a chair inthe plaza and has all thechildren gather aroundfor a reading of Twas theNight Before Christmas

while Santa acts out thestory behind her.I was born in 1942 and

my birthday is Dec. 18thso every year, we wouldget our tree (a silver tip)and decorate on mybirthday, she said. Mydad loved things likeroasted chestnuts androasted potatoes with thetree vendors in thosedays. Memories like that

and with Country Christ-mas is what I'm deter-mined to do with thisevent.

The Foothill Country Dancers meet once amonth in Newcastle for contra dancing.

    J

ust what you need: phys-ical activity in the midstof the holidays, along

with conviviality, goodcheer and tasty desserts.

The Foothill CountryDancers are holding a Hol-iday Dance and DessertPotluck at the PortugueseHall in Newcastle thismonth.

They promote New Eng-land-style contra dancing, what they describe as anon-commercial, do-it-

yourself, socially inclusive,community-building, par-ticipatory, musically drivenrecreation.

No experience is neces-sary. All dances are taughtand prompted, and nopartner is required.

Its a form of communitydancing designed to

include everybody, saidEric Engles, board memberwith the Foothill CountryDancers. It doesnt requireany fancy footwork, in factthere is no footwork at all.Its pretty easy and everydance is taught before-

    hand.Engles said they typically

get around 45 dancers, 60on a big night. Ages rangefrom 5 years old to 95 years, and skill levels are all overthe map.

    There is an orientation

workshop a half hourbefore, he said. If youdont know anything you

can learn enough in thattime to do quite well.

He said contra dancing isa form of New England folkdancing from the 1700s,kept alive and revived inthe 1970s.

It underwent an evolu-tion, but there is still a con-nection to the old tradi-tion, he said. There arehundreds of cities where

you can go and find a con-tra dance today. The music is always live,

and Engles said the bandmight even play a fewChristmas songs, done sothat they can be danced to.

Please bring a dessert forthe potluck spread duringthe break.
