  • Around the HornWHERE THE UT MARTIN SOFTBALL TEAM STANDS AT EACH POSITION Catcher Senior Erica Duke has developed into the team leader and head coach Donley Canary is expecting big things from her behind the plate. Erica has some experience behind the plate. She split time her junior year and got some reps in her freshman and sophomore years, the coach said. She is by far our best catcher. She had a good fall, and she has hit the ball really well. Canary said Duke is hitting the ball the best she has hit it in her tenure at UT Martin. She has got to step up and man that catching position, Canary said. Erica has a strong arm. She has good mechanics and she has been a good mentor to the two freshmen catchers (Lauren Smith and Carter Mansolino). Both Smith and Mansolino need gameday experience and experience behind the plate. Both of them have potential to hit well. Canary said. Smith is the leading high school home run hitter in Illinois. Mansolino led the Skyhawks in hitting during the fall.Th ey both need to catch better, Canary said. We are working towards that every day. First Base Sophomore Amanda Brandenburg will make the transition from right fi eld to fi rst base this season. Th e OVC Co-Freshman of the Year will also have a regular turn in the pitching rotation. Amanda has done a good job with the move, Canary said. Amanda is a left-handed hitter, and she does a lot of things well. She will hit fourth when she is in the lineup. Sophomore Lydia Biggerstaff could see time at fi rst when Brandenburg

pitches. Lydia is a very strong fi rst baseman, Canary said. She has a lot of potential with her bat.Sophomore Stephanie Nidiff er, who made the OVC All-Newcomer team a year ago, will make the move across the diamond from third base to fi rst base. Stephanie missed the whole fall season which has put her behind. She has dealt with some sickness, Canary said. She had a tough fi rst half of the year, but we hope she can get it back together. She is trying to get back in the battle for the fi rst base position. Second Base Katie Reiff , a junior college transfer from Lake Land Community College in Illinois, will play second base this season for the Skyhawks. She has really stablized our infi eld, Canary said. Katie is a shortstop playing second base. She has a big arm. Shes fl ashy. She can make a lot of plays that we couldnt make last year. Behind Reiff , is freshman Samantha McClure. Sam has come in and done a great job. She is a great athlete, Canary said. She runs well, and she will see a lot of action coming off the bench to pinch run. She is very athletic and has a bright future ahead of her playing the middle infi eld at UT Martin. Shortstop Senior Jenny Bain will be the starter for the Skyhawks at shortstop. Bain has started and played 177 consecutive games at shortstop. She is a two-time fi rst team All-OVC player. Jenny had a a subpar season by her standards but it was a good season in my eyes, Canary said. She hit .285 seven home runs and led the team in RBI (37). Jenny is a very calming infl uence , and a strong student of the game, Canary said. Jenny is like having another coach on the fi eld. She knows what is going on and directs our infi eld. She is very comfortable talking to the other players and letting them know what they should be doing and whats

    2012 UTM Softball Page 4 UTMSPORTS.COM

  • going to happen. We are very fortunate to have her. Freshman Lindsey Feigl, from Park Central High School in St. Louis, will back Bain up at shortstop. Lindsey has an outstanding arm, probably the best arm we have ever had in our infi eld, Canary said. She throws the ball 65+ across the infi eld. If something happened to Jenny (Bain), we would feel comfortable putting Lindsey at shortstop. Lindsey is going to get some playing time as a freshman and that is exciting for us down the road. Th ird Base Freshman Kenzi Tate will take over at third base for Nidiff er who has been moved to fi rst base. Kenzi has come and won the position, Canary said. She has good range going to her left and right. She is a hard-working athlete. She works hard in the weight room and hard on the fi eld honing her skills. She also has some serious pop in her bat. Tate will also have a spot in the pitching rotation. Backing up Tate will be sophomore Megan Chesney. Left Field Sophomore Kayla Wade will play left fi eld for the Skyhawks. She off ers good speed to the team defensively and on the base paths. Kayla has worked hard this summer to improve her game, Canary said. She has come in and nailed down the position. Freshman Kelsey Dixon will back up Wade. Like the sophomore, Dixon brings plenty of speed to the diamond. Kelsey is extremely quick, Canary said. She is probably the second fastest player we have on the team.Dixon is a left-handed hitter who can slap or swing away. She has tremendous off ensive potential. If she puts the ball on the ground you will have a hard time getting her out unless it is hit right at an infi elder, Canary said. She needs to improve her defense before we can put her in left fi eld and she is working hard to do that, Canary said. Center Field Leah Taylor, who transferred to UT Martin from Tennessee, makes the move from second base to center fi eld. She has done an outstanding job, Canary said. Leah is the fastest player we have on the team and she has a good arm. She can cover from left center fi eld to right center fi eld by herself and she has really adjusted well to the centerfi eld position. Taylor will serve as the Skyhawks leadoff hitter. She has tremendous power, Canary said. As a sophomore Taylor hit .268 with 10 home runs and two doubles. She had seven triples and was among the top 10 in the nation

in triples. Th e Brownsville native drove in 30 runs. On the base paths, Taylor stole 34 out of 37 bases. She is an outstanding runner and if anything she is faster this year, Canary said. She is an outstanding young lady, a straight-A student, and she has a lot going for her. Walk-on Kristen Lackey will serve as the back-up to Taylor in center fi eld. Kristen works tremendously hard, Canary said. She will be our No. 1 runner off the bench because she can come in and steal a base for you.Kristen is working extremely hard to improve her hitting and her defensive skills, Canary said. She will be seeing some playing time this year. It has been a real joy watching Kristen work.

Right Field Becca Williams, a part-time starter in 2011, will get a fulltime job this season in right fi eld. Becca has struggled some with the bat, but we know she is a better hitter, and she is hitting the ball well right now, Canary said. Becca has the best arm of any outfi elder, Canary said. She is a very strong defensive outfi elder and her place in the lineup is justifi ed. She runs well and I know she can hit. We just need to build some confi dence in her. Behind Williams, freshman Casey Vincent and Brandenburg will both see some time in right fi eld if the situation dictates.

Pitchers Chelsea Jones is back for her senior year and will be the Skyhawks No. 1 pitcher. Jones won 16 games as a junior. She made 40 appearances and threw 17 complete games with a 2.24 ERA and 180 strikeouts. She is a work horse for us, Canary said. Chelsea doesnt know how good she can be. When she goes to the circle, you know you always have a chance to win. She can throw the ball 65+ miles an hour. She is the pitcher we will go to this year.Brandenburg was 14-4 in the circle last year as a true freshman. She has a devastating changeup, and she is working on other pitches this year. She will be our second pitcher. Th e third pitching spot is up in the air right now, Canary said. We have a couple of freshman -- Casey Vincent and Kenzie Tate -- that will both go in and pitch. Casey is a left-handed pitcher. She throws a lot of off speed pitches but she does have a good rise ball and she will get a regular turn.Kenzie (Tate) will get a regular turn pitching as well. Kenzie has a curve, drop ball and a nice change up. Morgan Lewis, battling an injury, will fi ll the designated player role, but could see time in the circle before the season is over. Lydia Biggerstaff could also spend some time in the lineup as the designated player.
