MinokamoCultureForest

作家たちが美濃加茂に来て、滞在して作品を制作発表する。こ

の一連の流れについて 1988 年から 1997 年までの 10 年間「作家

と作品との対話」をねらいに開催された「美濃加茂彫刻シンポジ

ウム」に自然につながっていることに気がつきました。そもそも、

このミュージアムに作家が宿泊滞在できるアトリエ棟が備わっ

ていること自体、このシンポジウムの経験が活かされています。

昼夜問わず制作に打ち込め自炊もできるので、作家を招くとき

にはこの施設を毎回使用していますが、文化の森ギャラリーの

準備・展示期間は最も多くの作家が出入りし、アトリエらしい空間

となります。

この催しは、通常当館が企画する展覧会とは異なります。まず、

館は作家を選びません。複数のギャラリーが森の中にオープン

するという設定で、ギャラリーのリーダーとなる数人の作家が

それぞれ自分で声を掛け、誘い合っています。その結果、参加者数

は 2010 年が 52 人、2011 年は 81 人に上りました。印刷物の作

成や運営費用は作家の出品参加費で賄います。チラシのデザイン

や森の中での展示スペースの割り振りも自分たちで決定します。準

備から撤収までの数週間はアトリエ棟が滞在制作の場となります。

環境を壊さないことと来館者の通路の確保や安全面に配慮すれば、

あとは自由。つまり作家自身による手作り企画なのです。

ミュージアムを囲む森は、深い森ではありません。人が出入りで

きるよう開かれています。「森」という自然環境は、創作にも刺激

を与えるようです。普段の作品を森に展示してどう見えるかを考え

る人もいれば、いつもは絵を描いていても今回は立体に挑戦する

という作家もいます。中には思いがけず新しい表現が出てきたと

いう声もありました。皆が何かを思いつき、実験する場となって

いるのです。会期中も作家はじっとしていません。思いつくまま

作品を増やしたり、一旦据えたものの位置を動かすことも珍しくな

く、森の中の展示は最後まで静止することなく変わり続けます。

参加作家には、共通してゆるやかな空気感があります。展示空間

としての状況を受け入れ、自分の「場」にする器用さも持ってい

ます。恐らくここに来る前に試行錯誤をしてきたと想像しますが、

展示作業時もキリキリすることなく、自分のペースで取り組んで

いるように見えました。作品集の閲覧や談話のスペースとした工芸

室には、のんびりとした自由な時間が流れます。作家達は互いの

作品の元で話したり、時には芝生でぼーっとしたり、近づいてきた

子どもと遊んだりもします。静かに鑑賞する室内展示と比べ混沌

とした印象があることは否めませんが、ここには表現の生まれる

場に漂う空気が確かにあるのです。

人は自然の中で五感を働かせます。それは作家も来館者も同じで

あり、来館者は作品の存在に気づき足を止めます。散歩や喫茶な

ど展覧会目的ではなく訪れた人も作品や作家に近づき、自然に対

話が生まれる風景がありました。この間の来館者は制作現場に

遭遇し、新鮮なアートを眺め、作家が作家として生きている姿を知

ることができるのです。

多くの人が関わって動き続けた展覧会、撤収後の静かな森には展

示の余韻が残り、もう一度活気にあふれた自由な雰囲気に触れた

くなります。作家たちが積極的に挑戦し、見知らぬ人と出会い話

をする中で、その後につながる何かを見つけてくれたらと思ってい

ます。来館者が作品や作家との出会いに好感を持ってもらえれば

と願います。そして、面白いものに敏感な作家たちが生き生きと

活動する数日間を、来年の春も迎えられるよう祈っています。

Following the “Minokamo Sculpture Symposiums”, which

were held from 1988 to 1997 and aimed at examining “the

conversations between the viewer and the artist and the viewer

and the artwork”, the Minokamo City Museum put in place a

system for a studio in which an artist could stay and work. The

invited artist can use the studio facility, including a kitchen, 24

hours a day to concentrate on working on their art. During the

Woodland Gallery, the studio becomes full of artists at work,

which leads to an exciting and creative atmosphere.

The Woodland Gallery Project is unlike other exhibitions that

the museum holds. The main difference is that we don’t choose

the artists who take part in the exhibition. The idea is that

a number of “galleries” are created in the forest next to the

museum and the project planner chooses an artist to be

responsible for each one. All of these gallery “leaders” then

look for interesting artists and decide who will be exhibited in

their space. Word of mouth of the project has spread, so that

the number of participating artists has also risen, from 52 in

2010, to 81 in 2011. The artists design the flyers and posters and

cover their own costs. They decide among themselves who will

use which exhibition space. The studio becomes an Artist in

Residence space for the few weeks from the preparation to the

de-installation. The artists have to make sure not to destroy any

nature, and must secure the path for viewers to ensure safety,

but otherwise they can do whatever they want. In other words,

this is a do-it-yourself project by the artists.

The forest beside the museum is not very deep. It is open

and easy for people to enter, but certainly remains a natural

environment, which stimulates the artists’ creativity. Some

artists exhibit their usual art in the forest and explore how

the forest affects their work. Others attempt the challenge

of creating new material specifically for this environment.

Everyone takes something from it and it becomes a place to

experiment. The artists don't stop working even after the show

begins. They might add new works or change the positioning

of what is already there. The exhibition in the forest never stops

developing right up until the end.

The artists in this event generally seem to have a relaxed air

about them. They accept the condition of the space and utilize

it as a strength. We assume that they experiment, through trial

and error, before the installation, but once they come here

they seem not to get stressed and work at their own pace.

There is a very relaxed mood in the handicraft room, which is

always open for chatting and looking at portfolios. People have

discussions in front of their work or daydream out on the grass

or play with kids. Of course, it seems slightly chaotic compared

to an exhibition in a white cube, but it has an atmosphere that

stimulates thought and fosters creativity.

In nature, we are much more aware of all five senses. Visitors

to the galleries will sense the forest and the artwork in it.

Even people who visit the museum just for a cup of tea feel

this awareness and often start conversations with the artists.

During this exhibition, people can encounter the moment that

art is born and see how an artist goes about trying to make this

moment happen.

Once the project is finished, all the artworks are gone and the

forest becomes quiet again. But it still holds the energy of the

exhibition. It makes us want to feel that energy again. We hope

that, through this experience, the artists have found something

that will inform their future work, and that the viewers enjoyed

seeing the art and meeting the artists. We also look forward to

next year, when we can experience more days of excitement

with a group of artists in search of a new perspective.

2008 年の秋、私はこの美術館での展覧会準備のため隣接する

アトリエ付き宿泊施設（アトリエ棟）に２週間ほど滞在して

いた。朝早く目が覚めると森林に囲まれた美術館の周りを

散歩した。あるとき、杉や檜林の底まで降りると、朝日が丘

の上から一直線に差し込み、一点を照らしていた。光は森の

間を通り抜け、地面の落ち葉にスポットを当てているようだっ

た。その日だまりの場所まで行き、自分の顔に光を当ててみた。

そのとき、ふと、子供の頃、近所の犬走りの道を、忍者になっ

たつもりで駈けて遊んでいた事を想い出した。

今、思い返せば、からだという乗り物を手に入れた何者かが、

心の中で「わー！」と叫んで、自由または、不自由を、全身

で感じているような気持ちだった。

全くの「無」だった何者かは、そのため無人（Nobody）だっ

たことを、一切思い出す事できなくなり、私の中のいい知れ

ない疑問「一体、何が何で何なのだろう」ということが、後々

まで付いてまわったのは、このためだった。このような記憶

の解決を、この朝の散歩で再度、思い出していた。

In the autumn of 2008, I stayed in the studio of a museum for 2 weeks preparing for an exhibition. Whenever I woke up early in the morning, I would go for a walk in the forest by the museum. One day, after I reached the bottom of the forest, the sunlight came in over a hill and shined directly onto the ground, focusing on one place like a spotlight. I walked down to the spot and put my face in the sun. I suddenly remembered a scene from my childhood – I was running around some paths, pretending to be a ninja.Looking back now, I can see that somebody had possessed my whole body, was shouting, was expressing in my heart either being free or not being free.The somebody, who was also a complete ‘void’ (meaning ‘nobody’), couldn’t remember who he was. This haunted me with an unspoken question, something like ‘What on earth is what?’

た。そこで、私は忍者になったつもりで、近道を走り、彼女

よりも先に家に帰り、驚かせてやろうと考えた。思ったとお

り、祖母は驚いた。そして私はこの事が祖母の笑い話として、

幾度か聞かされる事になることも同時に考えていた。

そして、もうひとつ、この光の体験は、いつか書く事になる

であろう、この文章の動機になることだろう、とも思ったの

だった。

I knew that if I took a shortcut and ran fast, like a ninja, I could get home before her and I could surprise her. So I did and, just as I had thought, she was surprised. I also knew that this episode would be told many times later, as one of my grandmother’s favorite stories.I also knew that I would eventually write about this experience of the light.

企画・主催：Woodland Gallery Project ＋美濃加茂市民ミュージアム

2011 年 4 月 29 日からの 3 日間、豊かな自然を育むみのかも文化の森に、79 名と 1 組のアーティストが集い、壁も天井もない独自のギャラリーを、森の中にいくつも出現させました。

そのギャラリーで、それぞれのアーティストは日々の制作のなかで生み出した作品や、森からインスピレーションを得て制作した作品を展示し、森を鮮やかに変貌させました。

森の中を散策しながら、森と響きあう現代美術を体感できる場として、自然の中の開けた会場により、さらなる交流の基軸となった展覧会です。

Woodland Gallery 2011 Period: 29th April, 2011 – 1st May, 2011

Location: Outdoor Forest Site of Minokamo Culture Forest

Organizer: Woodland Gallery Project + Minokamo City Museum

The rich, undisturbed nature of the Minokamo Culture Forest provides the setting – a series of galleries without walls or ceilings – for a new exhibition featuring diverse artists from various fields.

This space has inspired new works by some of the artists, as well as providing a novel context for the more characteristic work of others. Both have given rise to a remarkable transformation of the forest.

Walking around this exhibition, one can enter into a dialogue with artists and experience their art, which is itself interacting with the forest around it.
