    Course Description

Marketing is by far the broadest area of business. While there are many specific skills needed for various aspects of marketing, the one skill that is required of everyone no matter what their function is a marketing frame of mind, for marketing is more a way of thinking about and analyzing business problems than anything else. In addition, the class gives the students 1) a broad introduction to marketing that covers all of the basic principles, institutions, vocabulary, etc. needed to begin a career in marketing management; 2) the ability to match marketing policies to capabilities and objectives; and 3) a clear view of the big picture of marketing in preparation for marketing electives that cover more specific topics.

    1) Optimal prices depend on costs. We will discuss which costs are relevant in pricing decisions and how they should be used in determining optimal prices. 2) Finding the optimal price requires an understanding of how sales change with price changes. This is a function of both consumer and competitor behavior. We will cover broad principles for anticipating competitive behavior. 3) Segmentation is often key to profitability. We will discuss segmentation from a pricing point of view, with discussion of the legal and ethical ramifications of price discrimination. Prerequisite
