Stewardship Reflections

“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes

and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

(Matthew 5:20)

The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law, and they used this to elevate themselves above the

other people. Jesus is clear – it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following

church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sunday and then

gossiping about a fellow parishioner on the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee.

6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

As we are only one week away, yes one, from the season of Lent, I ask everyone to bring their old palms to

the Church so that they can be burned and used for the ashes on Ash Wednesday.

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, February 26th, and runs for forty days. If you count the days, minus the

Sundays, you will get forty days. Lent is a very good opportunity to do some serious reflection on where, not if, we

need to repent and undergo conversion of heart which means conversion of life. It is important that we Catholics

begin, even now, to have a plan for Lent. Think about how you are going to spend Lent from a spiritual point of

view. I will expand on how the Church helps us live Lent. The really important thing is not waste this time that

precedes Lent and to lay out how you are going to live it, what you are going to do throughout Lent. You do

not need to do a lot quantitatively, but rather choose some things (practices, sacrifices) and do them well and

with love for God.

Formulate the plan now, and don’t wait for Ash Wednesday, or the 1st Sunday in Lent.

This coming Monday is Family Day. It is a holiday, an opportunity to spend time together as a family and

just being normal and natural. It is important that we make family time one of the top priorities of life. Here is what

St. Theresa of Calcutta said about the importance of family: “If you want to change the world, go home and love

your family.” Who would argue with St. Theresa of Calcutta on this point!

I will be able to offer three Masses (as usual) on Ash Wednesday. Fr Vincent Hawkswell (retired) has

generously agree to assist me with the 3 Masses and help with the distribution of ashes at each Mass. Fr Hawkswell

will offer the 4pm Mass on Ash Wednesday. Depending on circumstances, whether someone can be appointed –

even temporarily – here, or not, I am considering what I need to suspend. I have already begun to do this and if need

be will continue to do so. Please keep me in your prayers as I strive to balance the busy schedule here at Corpus

Christi. Things will work out, of this I am convinced, but it may take time.

Every year following Registration for the new school year some parents want to know why they have been

moved into Category 2, or perhaps have not moved out of Category 2 into Category 1. Every year that I have been

here, 10 going on 11 years, I have published an explanation of this in the bulletin four times a year. Being in

Category 2 does not mean you are not a parishioner. It means you have fallen below a necessary “threshold” for

Mass attendance. Mass attendance can only be determined by you attending Mass, which is an obligation as a

Catholic and a promise made when your children were baptized, and by you dropping your envelope in the

collection basket. I make allowances for vacation and illnesses. When I have asked the Archdiocese about a

threshold they have always said 100% Mass attendance. This is required of us Catholics, but my threshold is lower

than 100%. I will not tell anyone what the threshold is because the tendency of fallen human nature is to “live down

to the threshold” and I do not want that to happen. Further - I do not look at amounts like some Pastors do. I can

assure you of this, and in some of those parishes, if you fall below a certain amount of giving, you are called by the

Pastor. I choose not to do that here as I want to emphasize attendance at Mass as the most important thing. If this

parish needs more money, I will ask you and tell you why we need it. In the meantime, the formula is simple and

straightforward: Go to Mass and put your envelope into the collection. Give according to God’s generosity to you

and according to your means. That is it! If someone does not read the notices in the bulletin or hears the information

I convey to parents at their interviews, there is not much I can do about this. I cannot force people to listen, but I can

say that I will not repeat myself unnecessarily. The formula is simple: Go to Mass every Sunday and drop the

envelope into the collection basket and you will be in Category 1. Failure to do this and you will be in Category 2.

Sincerely in Christ

Fr. Hamilton

Do You Pray Mechanically? 6 Tips for Learning to

Pray with More Passion

If you are anything like me, it bothers you, it makes you uncomfortable, to see so many people sharing photos, prayer chains, and hashtags like #PrayForJuanito. You ask yourself, “Do these people really pray or do they just share an image?” Then again, “Have they prayed for all the other tragedies that have occurred over the years with the same fervor that they are praying now?” I invite you to take a breath and calm yourself a little as we look at the situation together. There is some-thing good behind all this. The Lord always uses that which occurs around us to teach us a lesson.

I propose an idea to you: people in general (believing, practicing, observant, honest Catholics) believe in the efficacy of pray-er. They believe that if they lift any prayer to God, it will have a real effect. We know that prayer does not consist of sending good vibes so that the cosmos favors someone, or that the stars align to generate the proper conditions for something to happen. We believe that our prayers to God have real effects which affect the lives of others; we even believe that God can change a situation if we pray for it. This is a sign of hope. People continue believing in the power of prayer. Nobody can de-ny that it is a good thing.

How about taking this lifeline which God has granted us and using the opportunity to learn about, to teach, and to encour-age prayer? How about no longer being a part of the Facebook police who criticize the whole world (like I do) and joining the pastors of Facebook who take good intentions and convert them into holy intentions? Here are some reflections on this:

1. Let’s learn to recognize that others have faith – even in those we would least expect

There is faith in the world. God manifests himself in people’s lives, even in the lives of those for whom we do not have any spiritual expectations, whom we would not label as models of evangelization. The Lord is good and places the intention of praying in their hearts. Even if it is no more than an intention, this is the first step, a step forward.

2. God does not want suffering in any form

We cannot blame God for the things which humans do wrong. Nobody can say that God permits these things to happen so that we learn a lesson. God does not want tragedies, and perhaps he suffers more than us. These moments (desired neither by him nor anybody) are op-portunities for encounter and conversion.

3. We can’t lose momentum

Seeing so many people motivated, inspired, and convicted is a tremen-dous stimulus for prayer, and even though many have not really taken the time to make a real prayer, we can build upon their intention and encour-age them. Prayer is not a campaign with an end date, it is a way for us to relate to God. These “campaigns” can be the beginning of this relation-ship for many. Let’s take advantage of the opportunity, to learn and to teach prayer.

Page 8: 16, 2020 Our Mission: Eucharistic Emmaus …...Please note that morning Mass on Monday, February 17 will be at 9:00 am due to the Family Day statutory holiday. Unplanned the Movie

4. We make visible the invisible

Many have made visible other terrible situations, arguing that they have been happening a long time and nobody has prayed for them, but they do so in a way which is awkward and morbid, not inspiring anybody to pray. The Apostle in his role as a prophet, announces and denounces. Let’s value these opportunities and continue showing the suffering of Christ, not only to inform, but also to help others understand that our prayer as a Church is im-portant. The Lord hopes that we join this spiritual battle with a spiritually active attitude.

5. Slow down and stop for a moment How many times have we promised to pray for someone either on a social network or directly? Stop for a mo-ment. Take a few minutes out of your busy, fast paced day and sincerely offer that prayer which they need from you. The most difficult thing to change is one’s own heart.

6. Remember that we are not speaking to thin air This is the fundamental message of this post. We believe that when we pray, things happen, not because our good vibes and desires are magical, but because God pays attention and looks upon our desires and longings. He sees the generosity and integrity of our hearts. If it is His will, He grants us the gifts which we so fervently request. It is God with whom we engage in this conversation. Believing this, putting it into practice, and trusting in God’s re-sponse, is a gift which cannot stop sharing. Let’s pray!
