The Father’s Relationship in the Trinity

John 5:19-20

The Son cannot do anything without the Father and follows the Father’s instructions.

19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[a] does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.”

John 14:10

This passage reassures that the Son follows the Father, but it also says they are connected and in each other. The Father is not more important than the Son.

10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.


John 6:65

No one can come to the Son if it is not chosen by the Father.

And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”


1 John 4:14

The Father sent the Son.

14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.


2 John 2-3

The Father and the Son are one God with the same attributes: grace, mercy, peace, truth, and love.

The Father’s Relationship with us

John 17:11

The Father and the Son in unity is an example of unity that we should have among us.

11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.


1 Chronicles 22:10

We will have a relationship with the Father forever.

10 He shall build a house for my name. He shall be my son, and I will be his father, and I will establish his royal throne in Israel forever.


John 12:26

If we honor and serve the Son, the Father will honor us.

26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.


John 14:6-7

The Father sent His Son because He loves us and wants us to know Him through the Son. He wants that relationship with us.

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”


1 John 1:2-3

A summary of everything – we have a relationship with the Father through His Son, Jesus Christ.

2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

The Father’s Attributes

The Father is peace. 2nd Samuel 7:9-11

9 And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies…


The Father is faithful. He answers His promises of the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Acts 1:4

Acts 2:33

4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;

33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.


The Father is steadfast. Psalm 68:5

Psalm 89:26

26 He shall cry to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’

5 Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.

The Father is love. His love is forevermore. 1 Chronicles 17:13

13 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you,
