“EndoscopyinEvolution”.TheMalaysianSocietyofGastroenterologyand

This year’s theme: Endoscopy in Evolutionwas chosen tomarkmy own
journeyinthefieldofEndoscopyforthelasttwodecadeswhichmanyother
seniorendoscopistscanrelateto;Iwasstillusingthe‘eyepiece’fibreoptic
endoscopeswhenIfirstjoinedgastroenterologyintheUK.Backin2000,
whoamonguswouldhaveimaginedthatcompleteendoscopicvisualisation
ofthesmallbowelwouldbecomestandardofcare,thatlocallyadvanced
tumourscouldberemovedendoscopicallyandthatwecanperformbiliary
drainage inalmostall situations;be it throughERCPorEUS.The future
is already clear; the incorporation of artificial intelligence/robotics will

Objectives and Format of Workshop
Emphasis on practical tips in therapeutic endoscopy: technique, indications limitations and pitfalls. In particular in this year’s workshop we will be introducing several new sophisticated procedures for participants to learn, appreciate their utility and apply them in daily clinical practice which is guided by evidence based literature.
Procedures will include direct cholangioscopy, EUS guided core biopsy and EUS guided cystogastrostomy, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of gastric and colonic neoplasm, submucosal tunneling and endoscopic resection (STER) as well as peroral endoscopic Myotomy (POEM).

Tiing-Leong Ang SingaporeProfessor Dr Tiing-Leong Ang is currently the Chief and Senior Consultant at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the Director of the Endoscopy Centre at Changi General Hospital, Singapore. He is a Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He is a past president of the Gastroenterological Society of Singapore and a former council member of the Asia Pacific Association of Gastroenterology (APAGE). He is also a member of the Asian EUS Group (AEG). He completed his specialty training in Gastroenterology in 2004 and subsequently underwent further training in advance therapeutic ERCP and interventional EUS in Hamburg, Germany from 2004 to 2005. He also trained in Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) in Tokyo, Japan in 2007. His areas of clinical interests include pancreaticobiliary diseases, early GI cancers, image enhanced endoscopy, endoscopic resection, therapeutic ERCP and interventional EUS. He sits on several editorial boards of peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Singapore Medical Journal, Journal of Digestive Diseases and Endoscopic Ultrasound.
Hisatomo Ikehara Tokyo, JapanAssociate Professor Dr Hisatomo Ikehara is a senior endoscopist and currently serves at the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Division at the Nihon University, Tokyo, Japan. He is an expert in endoscopic submucosal dissection of early gastric and colorectal cancer where he is considered a leading world expert. He has having being invited for lectures and live demonstrations throughout Asia and Europe.
Mitsuhiro Kida Tokyo, JapanProfessor Dr Kida is Director of Endoscopy Center and Professor at the Kitasato University Hospital, Sagamihara, Kanagawa, Japan. Dr Kida is an expert in pancreatobiliary endoscopy including ERCP and endoscopic ultrasonography where he is considered a leading world expert. He is amuch travelled man, having been invited for lectures and live demonstrations throughout Asia and Europe. He is a key member of the Asian Endoscopic Ultrasound Group (AEG) and has mentored many trainees in EUS at his endoscopy center. He successfully held the 3rd Asian EUS Congress in Tokyo earlier this month.

Helmut Neumann Nuremberg, GermanyProfessor Dr Helmut Neumann is Professor of Medicine and Director of Endoscopy at the Department of Internal Medicine, University Medical Center, Mainz, Germany. He is actively involved in basic and clinical research in the areas of advanced endoscopic imaging. His main research focus is inflammatory bowel disease, infectious colitis, colon polyps and Barrett´s esophagus. Professor Dr Neumann has received a number of awards for clinical excellence and acts as a reviewer for various journals includingNature, The Lancet, Gastroenterology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Endoscopy. Dr Neumann acts as Associate Editor for Digestive Endoscopy and Digestive and Liver Disease and as Editorial Board Member of Endoscopy, United European Journal, The Video Journal and Encyclopedia of GI Endoscopy. He has also been assigned as a member of the ASGE International Committee and a Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE). His contribution to the field of endoscopy is officially recognised by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE). He has published over 160 articles in the field of advanced endoscopic imaging and on new and emerging endoscopic devices. His scientific research was published in high-rated journals including Nature, Lancet Oncology, Nature Medicine, Gastroenterology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Endoscopy. Besides, he holds multiple patents on advanced endoscopic imaging techniques.
Payal Saxena Sydney, AustraliaAssociate Professor Dr Payal Saxena is currently an Interventional Endoscopist at the AW Morrow Unit at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, Australia. She is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at the John Hopkins University, and the Academic Lead for interventional gastroenterology at the Institute of Academic Surgery at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She is a member of the AGW Scientific Programming Committee, Australian Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Association Committee, Asian Third Space Endoscopy Consortium Steering Committee, and Asia Pacific EUS Working Party. She is also the co-founder of Women in Gastroenterology Network Asia Pacific (WIGNAP). After completing her Gastroenterology specialty training in Australia, she underwent a research and clinical fellowship in GI Advance Therapeutics at the John Hopkins University, USA from 2012 to 2014. She has a special interest in various aspects of GI endoscopy including therapeutic EUS, ERCP, ESD and POEM. She is a member of the editorial board of the Endoscopic Ultrasound Journal and Video Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Tomonori Yano Tokyo, JapanAssociate Professor Dr Tomonori Yano graduated in medicine from Jichi Medical University in 1996 where he subsequenlty worked with THE pioneer of balloon assisted ennteroscopy, Dr Yamamoto, who invented the method of double-balloon endoscopy (DBE) in 2000. Dr Yano subsequently created the world famous cartoon on DBE, which has been viewed by most of doctors learning DBE. In 2011, he was awarded Ph.D. for “Endoscopic classification and long-term outcome of small intestinal vascular lesions”. His recent innovative work is “Gel immersion endoscopy: A novel method to secure the visual field during endoscopy in bleeding patients” which was published in 2016. He is especially interested in endoscopic diagnosis and treatment for obscure GI bleeding, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, and Crohn’s disease, etc. His team currently performs more than 400 DBE procedures per year and he has a vast experience in diagnostic and therapeutic DBE including ERCP for patient with altered gastrointestinal anatomy.
Ping-Hong Zhou Shanghai, ChinaProfessor Dr Ping-Hong Zhou is currently a specialist in therapeutic endoscopy and a general surgeon at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China. Dr Zhou graduated from Shanghai Medical University in 1992, and obtained his doctorate degree (Doctor of Surgery) from Fudan University in 2003. Having completed his surgical training in the Department of General Surgery of Zhongshan Hospital from 1992 to 1998, he started his training in digestive endoscopy as a senior resident in 1999 and received comprehensive training in various areas of advanced endoscopy (EUS, ERCP, ESD and endoscopic resection). His main researches focus on endoscopic diagnosis and the treatment of gastrointestinal tumor. He is one of the pioneers of ESD for the treatment of early gastrointestinal cancer in China and has performed more than 5000 cases of ESD. In recent times, he is very much involved in 3rd space endoscopy such as peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for esophageal achalasia, submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (STER) and endoscopic full-thickness resection (EFR) for submucosal tumors from muscularis propria without laparoscopic assistance. Owing to his outstanding achievement in the field of minimally invasive surgery, he has been invited to attend more than 200 international endoscopy conferences as a faculty. He has widely published over 60 papers in international peer-reviewed journals such as Gastroenterology, Ann Surg, Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol, Gastrointest Endosc, and Endoscopy. Also, he has chaired 1st to11th Sino-Japan Summit Forum on ESD and more than 40 ESD training courses in China.

Mary Bong Sydney, AustraliaMs Mary Bong is the Nurse Unit Manager of the Endoscopy Unit, Westmead Hospital in Sydney, Australia. Mary qualified in Malaysia before migrating to Australia in 2005 with her family, first working as an endoscopy nurse before taking the role of the NUM of the Unit four years later. Management is in her blood as she does not seem to be able to avoid this role. She is a credentialed gastroenterology nurse and attained her post-graduate diploma in management in 2016. She is passionate about her role, managing and leading the daily operations of the nursing staff to achieve quality performances and continuous, efficient functioning through exceptional nursing expertise and care. Westmead Endoscopy is highly regarded as a centre of excellence for interventional endoscopy receiving referrals from local and national centres in Australia. Mary has participated in various workshops and conferences over the years. She has been on the organising committee for the annual SIES (Sydney International Endoscopy Symposium) being held at the International Convention Centre Sydney with live cases being performed and relayed from Westmead Endoscopy Unit to the Convention Centre. The 12th SIES was recently held on the13th to 15th March 2019.
Nenny Suzanah SingaporeNenny Suzanah has worked in the healthcare industry for more than 26 years. She has 12 years experience in Nursing, and was posted in various disciplines in Singapore General Hospital (SGH). The next 14 years of her career were spent in an administrative capacity. Her portfolio includes research management, programme management and infrastructure development of facilities and centres in SGH. She has a bachelor’s degree from La Trobe University, Melbourne and graduated with a MBA from the University of Manchester, UK. She is the project manager of the new high-volume SGH Ambulatory Endoscopy Centre & Gastrointestinal Functional Unit and oversees the management and operations of the centres upon completion.

Professor Dr Mitsuhiro Kida is the Professor of Gastroenterology of
Kitasato University, Executive Consultant of Endoscopy Center of Kitasato
University Hospital and Director of Department of Gastroenterology at
Kitasato Medical Center, Tokyo, Japan.
Professor Kida graduated from the Kitasato University in 1981. He obtained
his Doctor degree in 1989 with the thesis title of “Endoscopic Ultrasonograpy
in the Diagnosis of the Depth of Gastric Cancerous Invasion; Differential
Diagnosis between Cancerous Invasion and Fibrosis of the Co-existing
Ulcer”. In the same year, he was promoted to Assistant Professor at Kitasato University. He subsequently
visited the Endoscopic Surgery Uint of Hamburg University and worked with Professor Dr N Soehendra
in 1993. He was invited by Professor Dr Classen to the Technical University of Munich as August Guest
Lecturer in 1999. In 2003, he was honoured with the title of Emeritus Professor by Shanghai Changhai
Hospital, Second Military Medical University, Shanghai, China.
His spectrum of clinical and research interest includes endoscopic ultrasound on gastric cancer,
subepithelial lesions, bilio-pancreatic disease and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy. His research
has been at the forefront of his field and his work has been published in top journals. Professor
Kida was the Director of Endoscopy Center of Kitasato University Hospital from 2013 till 2016. He is
currently a member of many local and international societies which includes Japan Gastroenterology
Endoscopy Society, Japan Gastroenterology Society, Japan Pancreas Society, Japan Biliary Society,
Japan Ultrasonics Society, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Society of Gastrointestinal
Endoscopy and Asian EUS group. He successfully organised the 3rd Asian EUS Congress in Toyko earlier
this month involving the top endosonographers from all over the world.
He was a faculty member for our Endoscopy Workshop in 2014 and has trained many
gastroenterologists in the field of EUS including Professor Ida Hilmi and myself. It is my great
pleasure to invite Professor Dr Mitsuhiro Kida to deliver this year’s Distinguished Lecture.

of theunit inthehospital.Sheworkedformanyyearsasan IntensiveCare
UnitnurseandsubsequentlystudiedforandobtainedaBachelorofNursing
degreefromtheUniversityofMalayain1995.Marybroughtwithherawealth
ofexperienceasa“hands-on”nurseaswellasanastutenursingsisterand
administrator.TogetherwiththeleadershipofEmeritusProfessorDato’DrGoh
KheanLeeasHeadofUnit,andtheassistanceofseniornurseslikeMrsMiriam
See,shehelpedforgedtheunitintooneofthemostformidableandefficiently
runEndoscopyCentresinthecountrycateringforalargepatientpopulation
aswellasofferingawholerangeoftherapeuticendoscopyservices.Ihadthe
privilegetoworkintheEndoscopyunitfrom2004to2005(andasSisterin
chargefrom2014to2016)andwasfortunatetohaveworkedunderherfor
atime.
When the group ofGI assistantsmet to form a society in 2001 under the
umbrellaoftheMSGH,MaryBongwaselectedasthefirstpresident,aposition
sheheldwithdistinctionandleadershipfrom2001to2004.
RegrettablyMarymade thebigdecision tomigrate toAustraliaand left the
UMMCinJune2005toworkattheWestmeadHospital,UniversityofSydney,
Sydney Australia. Our loss was a huge gain for Australia. Her leadership
qualities, diligence and efficiency were duly recognised and by 2009, she
wasmade theNurseUnitManager of the Endoscopy Unit atWestmead, a
positionsheholdstillpresently.TheWestmeadEndoscopyUnitisoneofthe
largestandmostwell-knownendoscopyunitsinAustraliaundertheheadship
ofProfessorDrMichaelBourke.

In1998,hewasappointedastheMedicalAssistantinchargeofEndoscopy
Unit atQueenElizabethHospital,KotaKinabalu,Sabah,whichwasheaded
byDatukDrJayaramMenon. Inthesameyear,hewasassignedtoprepare
workingpaperstointroduceGINursingaspartofthetrainingpathwayandfor
endoscopynursingtobeofficiallyrecognisedinMalaysia.In2001,MrPhilip
andafewseniorendoscopynursesmetuptodiscussthevisionandobjectives
fortheGINursesandthewayforward.
Working closely with Dato’ Dr Jayaram Menon, Philip was instrumental in
creatingtheNationalPostBasicGastrointestinalEndoscopyNursingProgram
andtheGIEndscopyNursinginKotaKinabalu,Sabahin2007.
In2007,afewGInurseswereawarded‘HadiahLatihanLuarNegara’topursue
trainingoverseas.MrPhilipandafewotherswerepostedtotheRoyalPrince
AlfredHospital,Sydney,Australia in2008for twomonthstraining. In2013,
MrGisanhad theprivilege toattend trainingofAdvance inManagementof
EndoscopyatSirCharlesGairdnerHospital,Perth,Australia.
Aftermanyyearsofhardwork,thefirstbatchofGIEndoscopynursesstarted
theprogrammeon1stJanuary2009.Tilltodaywehaveproducedmorethan
600 students throughout the country, both in the government and private
sectors.Mr Philip has contributed greatly to theGastroNursingCommittee
headedbyDatukDrJayaram.HeassistedinthepreparationoftheSOPinGI
NursingandwaspromotedasAssistantMedicalOfficer.
In2010,hewaselectedasthePresidentoftheMalaysianGIASociety,apost

ShewasthentransferredtoSelayangHospitalin1999asaNurseManagerinchargeoftheDayCareCentre.Withherwealthofexperienceinendoscopy,shesuccessfullyhelpedsetuptheendoscopyservicesinthenewSelayangHospitalwhichhasbecomewellknownasa trainingEndoscopycenterwithinternationalreputation.
She was appointed as Treasurer in 2001 for the newly formed EndoscopyNursingCommitteeinMalaysia,asAssistantSecretaryin2003andthenasthechairpersonin2005.
