St. Augustine, St. Benedict the Moor & St. Mary Churches: Pastoral Region One Dec 10, 2017
PREPARE YE THE WAY
Not until three years ago I was the pastor for
five parishes within the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.
One of those was St. Mary’s Parish in Camden, in the
Gratis area of the Preble County. It is about thirty
miles from St. Benedict Church but it takes me not
less than forty minutes for me to make it when I am
really driving at a reasonable speed whereas Cincinnati
which is about fifty-six to sixty miles takes me
somewhere forty-five minutes to make it. The
Camden road is full of curbs and hills on a country
road and that consumes time and needs extra care and
patience, whereas the Cincinnati one is a straight short
with four lanes and less curbs and hills. Today’s gospel reading urges us to prepare the
way of the Lord, level all the mountains and making
his paths smooth and straight. Most of us like a better
road, because it is comfortable to be on a good road
and a good road cuts down mileage and speedy up our
journey. I hope this will make us understand why God
today in the Gospel reading is asking us to make his
paths straight. On the Second Sunday of Advent, the
Church presents us with the challenge to research into
our hearts and find out the mountains and valleys in
our hearts. Each one of us as well as a community of
believers will need to ask ourselves: What are the pot-
holes in my life that I need to fill up; is it my
selfishness or my anger? What are the mountains in
my life that I need to level to speedy up the Lord ‘s
coming, is it my jealousy or pride? What are the curb
areas in my spiritual journey I need to straighten up, is
it the gossips and false fabrications of stories or it is
my laziness and lack of availing myself for the
services of the Lord?
If somebody important is coming to your
house, I am sure you take your whole time to clean up
and tidy up your compound and inside the house.
What are the dusty areas of your life and the areas of
tall grass that you need to clear? Christ is coming but
how are you going to receive him when he comes at
Christmas time or at the end of your life? Advent is the
time of preparation; a time we prepare waiting for both
his first and second coming. Let the readings today
help us as they give us the directions to meet him in the
proper way.
ENJOY YOUR ADVENT

OTHER AREA NEWS CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR’S MASS
Christmas Eve/Day: Sunday, December 24 ~ Mon-day, December 25, 2017: The Fourth Sunday of Ad-
vent will be observed on Saturday evening, December
23, and Sunday morning, December 24, 2017. Christ-
mas is to be observed Sunday evening, December 24
and Monday, December 25, 2017. There is an obliga-
tion to participate at Mass for both the Fourth Sunday
of Advent and for Christmas this weekend. Attend-ance at one Mass does not fulfill both obligations.
New Year’s Eve/Day: Sunday, December 31 ~ Monday, January 1, 2018: The Feast of the Holy Family will be celebrated the weekend of December 30/31, 2017. Monday, January 1, 2018, Mary, the Holy Mother of God, remains a holy day; however, the obliga-tion to attend Mass is abrogated in 2018. A Vigil Mass the evening on Sunday December 31st, in anticipation of the January 1st Holy Day, does not fulfill the Sunday obligation for the Feast of the Holy Family.
RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT FUND
“Your generous contribution helps us to care for our retired sisters and enables our younger sisters to contin-ue in active ministry,” writes a religious sister. Your gift to today’s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide medications, nursing care, and more for thou-sands of senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. It also helps ensure younger members can continue the good works of their elders!
LESSONS AND CAROLS A Service of Lessons and Carols will be
celebrated on Sunday, December 17th
at 2:00 p.m. at
St. Joseph Church, Dayton. In this service, we listen
to nine Scripture lessons which recount the Fall, the
promise of a Messiah, the Incarnation, and the Great
Commission to preach the Good News. Each lesson is
followed by a carol or other song that reflects on the
lesson's message and a brief prayer.
CHRISTMAS CRÈCHE EXHIBITION The University of Dayton is taking a "behind-
the-(Nativity) scenes" approach to At the Manger, its
annual exhibition of Christmas crèches Nov. 27-Jan. 5.
The exhibit takes place in the Marian Library's crèche
workshop on the fourth floor of Fitz Hall, (1529
Brown St.) where visitors can learn how volunteers
plan and construct display settings and clean, repair,
pack and store Nativity sets. Crèches also will be on
exhibit in two other locations — the Marian Library on
campus and at Bergamo/Mount St. John in Beaver-
creek. Group tours available
