MOBILE HOME-COOKING
The contestants on “Chopped” and “The Next Food Network Star” have nothing on Tom Kyrk. At least
they cook in fully equipped kitchens with stocked pantries. Kyrk cooks in the cab of his 2015 Freightliner Cascadia with ingredients brought from home or found at a supermarket within walking distance of where he parks for the night.
TV chefs might sneer at his mobile kitchen, but Kyrk not only turns out tasty, healthy food under those conditions, he helps other drivers eat better as well.“I’m motivated to help other people and put a priority on that,” he said.
Kyrk, a member of RoadPro® Family of Brands Pro Driver Council, operates Road Tested Living, a website that offers recipes, product reviews, exercise tips and other ma-terial for truckers wanting a healthy lifestyle. He gets help from other drivers and Bob Perry of Rolling Strong, a fitness program for pro-fessional drivers.
His passion for cab cooking was born from his own struggle. He began driving about 10 years ago for a Texas-based refrigerated carrier and quickly learned that a sedentary occupation
and truck stop food are a toxic combination. He ballooned from 250 pounds to more than 300 pounds. A doctor’s warning scared him into losing weight.
He added workouts, but knew he’d have to eat better if he wanted to lose enough weight. He wasn’t the first trucker to cook in his cab, but he was so pleased by the results that he decid-ed to spread the word with help from trucker trainer Perry.
The son of a minister, Kyrk, 39, takes natural-ly to proselytizing, though he’s not sure how many drivers he’s reaching through the web-site and demonstrations at trucking shows. “I could care less about the total number, but if I just help one driver to have a better quality of life, I’ve reached my goal,” he said.
His mobile kitchen is more elaborate than most, but there are no six-burner ranges or convection ovens here. He has two setups: a 12-volt kitchen consisting of two 12-volt portable stoves, two 1.5 quart slow cookers, a frying pan, a sauce pan/popcorn cooker and a coffeemaker, all by RoadPro; and a 110-volt kitchen with an electric grill, a larger crockpot and a rice cooker.

16// OWNER OPERATOR// AUGUST 2015
His culinary skills were on display at Road-Pro’s 2015 Travel Center Show & Sale in May in Lancaster, Pa. Kyrk cooked everything from egg muffins to pumpkin cheesecake us-ing the same equipment he carries in his truck. While he showed travel center operators the possibilities of mobile cooking, he was struck by the concern they had for truckers.
“They told me that they often see drivers, especially those new to the field, who have trouble affording food to eat. They’ve been recommending to them that they get some 12-volt appliances and start cooking in their trucks,” he said. “I left the show with a new appreciation of the concern travel center oper-ators have for drivers.”
There are no solid numbers about how many over-the-road drivers cook in their trucks. Kyrk said only a few do it exclusively, while a larger number mix cooking in their cabs, heat-ing up meals brought from home and eating in restaurants. The longer drivers are away
from home, the more likely they are to cook, he said.
The biggest obstacles to truck cooking are the driver’s lack of know-how, preparation and cooking time and the desire, at the end of a long day behind the wheel, to get out of the truck and spend time with other people, Kyrk said.
He is making it easier for drivers to cook with the Rolling Kitchen Cookbook, an e-book that can be downloaded for free from the Road Tested Living website (roadtestedliving.com). The cookbook is not all broccoli and Brus-sels sprouts. There are recipes for staples like meatloaf and mustard-coated pork chops, as well as desserts and snacks. Kyrk said he doesn’t expect to convert truckers to health food immediately.
“I just want them to start cooking for them-selves. That’s the first step,” he said. OO

GATS Recruiting Pavilion
joins drivers to jobs
If you’re a commercial driver, you are in a great position to find a new job. The driver shortage is in full swing, federal
regulations are affecting driver turnover, and there is a demand for increased freight volume from fleets. All of this is working to build a perfect storm for you, the driver.
This same perfect storm can lead to a lot of added stress. You have to deal with dispatchers pushing you to work harder, aggravated and (potentially) angry customers, and maybe even miss a little home time with the family. It can add a lot of stress to an already stressful job.
The Great American Trucking Show is dedicated to giving you the resources you want and need for a happy and healthy life. To help improve your career health (alongside your physical health), we have drastically expanded the driver recruiting pavilion to provide additional resources for you. You can find a job that fits your career needs.
We want to help you find your dream driving job.
The expanded recruiting pavilion puts you in contact with representatives from 99 exhibiting fleets, all of which are seeking to hire drivers just like you. You can speak directly to fleet representatives who can tell you about their fleet’s programs and benefits. These representatives can tell you other valuable information that you might normally miss out on, like the potential for career progression.

Just outside the pavilion, you can also find additional recruiting companies. These companies can help you find a job based on your criteria. They also represent other fleets they may not be exhibiting on the show floor.
This gives you an opportunity to find the job that meets your needs.
Even if you don’t live and work in Texas, you shouldn’t skip the show. While there certainly are fleets who operate solely out of Texas, there are a number of medium and large carriers with terminals across the United States.
The fleets recruiting at the show include some of the biggest carriers in the country, including Crete Carriers, KAG, Schneider National, Celadon, and Mercer Transportation. Over 29 states are represented in the pavilion alone.
You don’t have to stay in the Recruiting Pavilion. There are many areas throughout GATS that are built with you in mind. After you’ve found your job, you can take a stroll to Landstar’s Fit for the Road Health and Wellness Pavilion for access to free health screenings or take a load off in our new beer garden.
At GATS we are dedicated to improving your life by helping you be a happier and a healthier person. There are many ways you can improve your physical health, and finding a job that fits both your needs and the needs of your family can be an important first step.
Don’t wait to spend $10 at the door. Register for The Great American Trucking Show now and take advantage of everything the show has to offer for free. OO

Lighting plug and socket PM tips
The Phillips company shared their June edition of Qwik Tech Tips newsletter that detailed plug and socket
preventive maintenance steps in trademark quick-and-simple format.
Given the growth in use of magnesium and calcium chorides for road de-icing, plug-and-socket maintenance where the tractor connects to the trailer is more critical, Phillips says. The chemicals have been “found to be highly corrosive to brass and copper, which are the base materials for the contact pins used in plugs and sockets.”
MAINTENANCE STEPS:
STEP 1: Clean plug and socket connectors with a socket brush and water (NO SOAP).
STEP 2: Apply di-electric grease to all pins on both the plugs and sockets to prevent corrosion by keeping moisture out and increasing the fl ow of energy through the connection.
STEP 3: Plugs – To safeguard against uneven wear and pin degradation, every six months, rotate the electrical assembly plug from tractor to trailer side, or replace the plug inserts at the front of the plug.
STEP 4:Sockets – Use a foam socket seal for added protection against corrosion creeping into the trailer harness via the 7-way connection. OO

Kenworth recalling more than
100,000 vehicles,
Pete a few thousand
The following are three recalls issued by PACCAR at the beginning of summer:
1) More than 100,000 Kenworth trucks are being recalled for possible water leaks into the windshield wiper motor, possibly caus-ing the wipers to stop working. The water may also cause corrosion that could result in an electrical short.
Model year 2011-2016 Kenworth 963, T270, T370, T440, T470, C500, C540, C550, T680, T800 and W900 models man-ufactured from Nov. 1, 2010, to April 7, 2015, are affected by the recall.
2) Paccar says during assembly, some 2016 Kenworth models did not undergo the rear wheel mounting torque verifi-cation process. The rear wheels could be loose and separate from the truck.
Certain Kenworth T660, T680, T800 and W900 trucks manufactured be-tween Feb. 1, 2015, and April 20, 2015, are includ-
ed in this recall.
3) Approximately 1,500 trucks are includ-ed in a recall of trucks equipped with the Paccar MX-13 engines and Delco-Remy 40SI alternators. The alternator charge cables may chafe against a formed metal freon discharge line, which could cause an electrical short resulting in a fire.
Included in the recall are 2014-2016 Ken-worth T660, T680, T880 trucks manufac-tured from Feb. 18, 2013 to April 10, 2015, and 2011-2016 Peterbilt 386, 389, 567, 579 and 587 trucks manufactured from Dec. 13, 2010, to April 20, 2015. CD
