Frankenstein is one of the earliest books of science fiction.  It is considered one of the greatest gothic romantic novels of all time and Mary Shelley wrote it when she was only eighteen years old!

Read the text carefully while listening to the tape, then answer following questions.1.How is Frankenstein different from other children? What did he want to do when he was young? 2.What did he do to get close to the secrets of heaven and earth before he was sent to university? 3.After he was sent to university, what did he think of the things taught at university?

4.What attracted his attention then?5.Did he discover the cause of life? What still remained a difficult job for him to create a new life?6.Where did the doctor collect his necessary materials to create the new life; and how huge is the being?7. Can you describe the feelings of Frankenstein when he saw his creation for the first time?

1.How is Frankenstein different from other children? What did Dr Frankenstein want to do when he was young?Instead of children’s play and adventure, he was driven by a desire to learn. He wanted to learn the secrets of heaven and earth.

2.What did he do to get close to the secrets of heaven and earth before he was sent to university?

He read all the books that he could find that throw light upon these matters. He studied maths and physics and the works of many brilliant scientists.

3.After he was sent to university, what did he think of the things taught at university?

He found all that was taught at university very disappointing.

4.What attracted his attention then?

the structure of the human body and any animal that was alive.

5.Did he discover the cause of life? How ? What still remained a difficult job for him to create a new life?

Yes. By days and nights’ hard work. How to prepare a body for it with all its muscles and organs still remained a difficult job.

6.Where did the doctor collect his necessary materials to create the new life; and how huge is the being?

He collected bones from graves and many of his materials came from butcher shops and hospitals. About eight feet in height.

7. Can you describe the feelings of Frankenstein when he saw his creation for the first time?

Pleased and frightened. Because it was a living horror, but he succeeded after all.

Language points

1. Search “ 在……搜查；搜身”Search 后接被搜查对象The police searched the prisoner to see if he had a gun.警察对该囚犯搜身，看他是否有枪。Search ……for…… 搜某地寻找某目标They searched the hill for the enemy.他们搜山寻找敌人。。

2. throw\cast light on (upon) “ 阐明某事，使某事显得非常清楚”The modern scientific development has thrown light on this question.现代科学的发展已使这个问题明朗化。The president promised to throw more light on his new economic policies.总统答应对他的新经济政策作更多的说明．
