The Bedouins from the interior ofArabia visitedthisport regularly tobuy theirsupplies since itwas the nearest port to them and because the City merchantstreated themwell.Kuwait, or Grain as it was once called, was only a small fishingvillage before a federation of tribal families fromArabiamigrated to it. It was al-Subah dynasty, however, who gainedthe confidence of the people of Kuwait and became the rulingfamily. InaletterbySheikMubarak, whoruledKuwait from1896till 1915, totheOttomangovernorof Basra(Iraq), hedeclared that Kuwait was a barren land when his greatgrandfather Subahinhabitedit intheyear 161 3.
