As we approach the Jewish New Year, we remember our dear departed for the
blessings they gave us.
5781 Yom Kippur 2020
“Zichronam Livracha”May the memories of our departed loved ones be a blessing.
זכרונם לברכה
It is a fearful thing to love
what death can touch.
A fearful thing to love hope, dream:
to be
A thing for fools, this, And a holy thing,
to love.
For your life has lived in me, your laugh once lifted me,
your word was a gift to me.
To remember this brings painful joy.
‘Tis a human thing, love,
a holy thing, to love
what death has touched.

A Message from the Rabbi
The Poet has written: Four things are beautiful beyond belief: The pleasant weakness that comes after pain, The radiant greenness that comes after rain, The deepest faith that follows after grief, And the re-awakening to love again.
Few things are more difficult or more comforting than coming home to Ohef Sholom each year to remember our lost loved ones. There are so many memories embedded in the hallowed walls of our sanctuary that transport us to happier times and places. This year is especially difficult, for along with mourning the losses of those we loved, we grieve not being able to do so in our beautiful Temple building. Yet our forbearers would be so proud of the ways in which, during this pandemic we have remained, virtually, Ohef Sholom Temple; we have redefined community and remained connected to one another and our sacred community in ways we never could have imagined. Rest assured, our High Holidays and, in particular our Memorial Service, this year will transport us back to our beloved House of Worship, where Cantor Jen, Chuck Woodward, our wonderful OST choir, and I will help you feel that you are coming home once again. It is that we will remember, that we will gather, that we will rise to pray to say aloud the names of those we love this year as well, that will affirm that we have internalized, as sacred, all that that our lost loved ones have taught us. For what did our parents and grandparents, our spouses and siblings, and even, God forbid, our children want of us except that we should be settled, content and at peace. Re-awakening to live again, to love again, and still to remember again, declares our faith in their teachings and our hopes for a radiant present and future in which their love blesses us every day. May their memories strengthen and guide you. May your Temple home and family (even virtually) be a shelter against the storm and a stronghold of the faith and love you continue to share. May the Source of Peace bring you peace and comfort in your remembering on Yom Kippur and always. And may you and those you love be sealed in the Book of Life for a new year of health, vigor, fulfillment and peace. Amen.

A Message from the Cantor “The deeper that sorrow carves into your being the more joy you can contain. Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven?”
~ Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) When I was about to go off to college, I remember sitting with my neighbor in his garden. He was telling me about his son who had committed suicide many years before. He spoke with sadness in his voice. At times, happy memories brought a smile to his face. Then, the pain of losing him would resurface, and his voice would break. His love for his boy was clear. He talked about the ways that his own life honored his son’s memory. As our conversation came to a close, he said, “You know, the one positive thing I can say about what I experienced is that experiencing great tragedy increased my capacity to experience great joy.” I have never forgotten those words. In the time since then, I have experienced my own losses, and sat with countless people as they have processed their grief. I often think of my friend’s insight. What better way could there be to honor the memories of those we love than to live our own lives with a joy that has increased for having known and loved them? Each year, as Yom Kippur comes to a close, we set aside time and space for our grief, whether it is old or new. Together, as one people, we remember those whose lives have blessed us and whose memories shape us. This Yizchor service is then followed just moments later by Ne’ilah, our concluding service, in which we turn back to joy with an increased capacity to experience it — a gift from those we have loved and lost. May the Source of Peace bring peace to all who navigate the complicated path of grief. May the memories of those you have loved strengthen you and increase your capacity for joy. May this New Year be a year of health and happiness for you and all those you love. G’mar chatima tova - may you be inscribed for blessing in the Book of Life.

The Memory of the Righteous Is A Blessing
To everything there is a season, A time for everything under the sun: A time to be born and a time to die A time to laugh and a time to cry A time to dance and a time to mourn A time to seek and a time to lose. This is the time we remember Those who gave meaning to our lives. This is the time we remember The bonds that tied us together, the love that we shared, And the memories that remain with us still.
Gift of Memory
The gift of memory is very precious: It helps us taste the pleasures of life long after they have passed our lips; It brings back the dear features of those gone for awhile; It preserves us from the superficialities of today and the airiness of tomorrow by giving us the depth and weight of yesterday; It tempers the onrush of the present, and the allure of the future, by the wise whispers of the past.

Prayers of Memory & Consolation
Adonai Ma Adam God, what are we, that You have regard for us? What are we, that you are mindful of us? We are like a breath; our days are as a passing shadow; we come and go like grass which in the morning shoots up, renewed, and in the evening fades and withers. You cause us to revert to dust, saying: Return, O mortal creatures! Would that we were wise, that we understood whither we are going! For when we die we carry nothing away; our glory does not accompany us. Mark the wholehearted and behold the upright: they shall have peace. God, You redeem the soul of Your servants, and none who trust in You shall be desolate. Shiviti Adonai (Psalm 16) I have set the Eternal always before me; God is at my side, I shall not be moved. Therefore does my heart exult and my soul rejoice; my being is secure. For You will not abandon me to death nor let Your faithful ones see destruction. You show me the path of life; Your presence brings fullness of joy; enduring happiness is Your gift. Esa Einai (Psalm 121) I will lift up my eyes to the mountains: what is the source of my help? My help will come from God, Maker of heaven and earth. God will not allow your foot to slip; your Guardian will not slumber. Behold, the Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. The Eternal is your Keeper, God is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. God will guard you from all evil, God will protect your being. God will guard you, coming and going, from this time forth, and for ever.
8
The Twenty Third Psalm The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for the sake of His name. Even when I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for You are with me; with rod and staff You comfort me. You have set a table before me in the presence of my afflictions; You have anointed my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Silent Devotion
In Memory of a Father Your memory, my dear father, fills my soul at this solemn hour. It revives in me thoughts of the love and friendliness which you bestowed on me. The thought of you inspires me to a life of virtue; and when my pilgrimage on earth is ended and I shall arrive at the throne of mercy, may I be worthy in the sight of God. May our merciful God reward you for the faithfulness and kindness you have ever shown me; may God grant you eternal peace. Amen. In Memory of a Mother I remember you in this solemn hour, my dear mother. I remember the days when you dwelt on earth, and your tender love watched over me like a guardian angel. You have gone from me, but the bond which unites our souls can never be severed; your image lives within my heart. May the Merciful One reward you for the faithfulness and kindness you have ever shown me; may God lift up the light of God’s countenance upon you, and grant you eternal peace. Amen.
9
In Memory of a Husband I remember you in this solemn hour, dear companion of my life. I remember the happy days we lived together; I remember your tender affection and self-denial while, hand in hand, we trod the path of our wedded life, when your love and fidelity were my comfort and your counsel and aid were my support. Though death has summoned you from my side, your image still lives in my heart, and continues to be an inspiration to me. May God keep you and give you eternal peace. Amen. In Memory of a Wife Your memory, dear companion of my life, now fills my soul. It revives in me the thought of the love, fidelity and self-denial which sweetened the days of my life. I treasure it in my heart and strive to become worthy of you. Though death has summoned you from my side, your image still lives within me and continues to be an inspiration to me. May God keep you and give you eternal peace. Amen. In Memory of a Child I remember you in this solemn hour, my beloved child. I remember the days when I watched you grow, and fostered beautiful hopes for your future. God has taken you from me, yet in my heart the fond remembrance of you can never die. God has called; God’s love is my solace, my staff and support. As parents cherish their children, so may God look with compassion upon you and grant you eternal peace. Amen. In Memory of a Brother, Sister or Friend I remember you in this solemn hour, my beloved brother, sister, friend. I remember the days when we lived together in happy companionship and your loving friendship were my delight and support. Though you have gone from me, your image abides with me. I think of you with gratitude and bless your memory for all the devotion you showed me. May God bless you with everlasting joy. May God keep you and grant you eternal peace. Amen.

A Prayer for All People O God of life, our times are in Your hand. One generation comes into the world to be blessed with days of peace and safety; another goes through the valley of the shadow, enduring the cruelties of persecution and war. Heartbreaking have been the times that have fallen to our lot, O God. We have lived through years of tyranny and destruction; we are schooled in sorrow and acquainted with grief. We have seen the just defeated, the innocent driven from their homes, and the righteous suffer a martyrdom as merciless as any of the ages have witnessed. At this hour of memorial we recall with grief all Your children who have perished through the cruelty of the oppressor, victims of hate; the aged and young, the learned and unlettered all driven in multitudes along the road of pain and pitiless death. Their very presence on earth was begrudged them, for they brought Your covenant of mercy and justice to the recollection of Your enemies; they perished because they were a symbol of Your eternal law; their death has brought darkness to the human soul. They lie in nameless graves, in faroff forests and lonely fields. And the substance of many was scattered by the winds to the earth's four corners. Yet they shall not be forgotten. We take them into our hearts and give them a place beside the cherished memories of our own loved ones. Now, they are ours. We pray to You, O source of mercy, that Your Torah, to which these, Your children, bore witness in life and in death, may come to glow with a renewed light in the human soul; that, remembering them, we may sanctify Your name in all the world. Thus will their memory become an enduring blessing to all Your children.
11
We Remember Them In the rustling of leaves and in the beauty of autumn, we remember them. In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them. When we are weary and in need of strength, we remember them. When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them. When we have joys we yearn to share, we remember them. So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us, as we remember them. O God, be near us in the sorrow of our hearts. Send comfort and consolation to all who are bowed down with grief and affliction. Let us see Your help speedily. May our troubled spirits find solace in the beauty of holiness which fills this memorial hour. May Your parental protection sustain us and may Your peace abide within us. We remember with sorrowing hearts those whom death has taken from our midst during the past year. We name in our hearts all our beloved and we remember them.
Memorial Prayer
Eil Malei Rachamim O God full of compassion, Eternal Spirit of the universe, grant perfect rest under the wings of Your Presence to our loved ones who have entered eternity. Master of Mercy, let them find refuge for ever in the shadow of Your wings, and let their souls be bound up in the bond of eternal life. The Eternal God is their inheritance. May they rest in peace, and let us say: Amen.

Let the glory of God be extolled, and God’s great name be hallowed in the world whose creation God willed. May God rule in our own day, in our own lives, and in the life of all Israel, and let
us say: Amen.
Let God’s great name be blessed for ever and ever.
Beyond all the praises, songs, and adorations that we can utter is the Holy One, the Blessed One, whom yet we glorify, honor, and
exalt. And let us say: Amen.
For us and for all Israel, may the blessing of peace and the promise of life come true, and let us say: Amen.
May the One who causes peace to reign in the high heavens, cause
peace to reign among us, all Israel, and all the world, and let us say: Amen.

The Meaning of Yahrzeit ANNIVERSARY OF A DEATH OBSERVANCE The Observance of the anniversary of a death goes back toTalmud times. From those days down to the present, it has been customary to observe the day solemnly and to avoid feasting and celebration. The practice of kindling a Yahrzeit light in the home on the anniversary of a death is a universal one. The obligation to be present in the Synagogue to memorialize the departed on the Yahrzeit is a religious duty. The religious value of the Yahrzeit is in the spiritual link between each of us and our departed. Reform Judaism sees in the Yahrzeit observance a moment of pause from the cares and anxieties of the world, when our beloved live again in the communion of prayer. We at Ohef Sholom Temple recall our beloved in the fellowship of other worshipers on Friday evening and Sabbath morning in our Sanctuary. We gain strength as we praise God’s name in the Kaddish prayer for the gift of their lives. In our homes, we kindle a Yahrzeit light, a symbol of faith and hope that does not falter. Many, on the occasion of a Yahrzeit, contribute to a worthy religious cause within the Temple, strengthening the work of our congregation. Thus, we build a bridge of memory and hope between the land of the living and the realm of eternal life.
58
The Kaddish Its origin is mysterious; angels are said to have brought it down from heaven and taught it to us. About this prayer, the tenderest threads of filial feeling and human recollection are entwined; for it is the prayer of the orphans! When the father or mother dies, the surviving children are to recite it throughout the year of mourning, and then also on each recurring anniversary of the death on the Yahrzeit. It possesses wonderful power. Truly, if there is any bond strong and indissoluble enough to chain heaven to earth, it is this prayer. It keeps the living together, and forms the bridge to the mysterious realm of the dead. One might also say that it is uttered; therein lies the warrant of its continuance. Can a people disappear and be annihilated so long as a child remembers its parents? It may sound strange: in the midst of the wildest dissipation has this prayer recalled to his better self a dissolute character, so that he has bethought himself and for a time at least purified himself by honoring the memory of his parents. Because this prayer is a resurrection on the spirit of the perishable within us, because it does not acknowledge death, because it permits the blossom, which, withered, has fallen from the tree of mankind, to flower and develop again in the human heart, therefore it possesses sanctifying power. To know that when thou diest, the earth falling on thy head will not cover thee entirely; to know that there remain behind, those who, wherever they may be on this wide earth, whether they may be poor or rich, will send this prayer after thee; to know that thou leavest them no house, no estate, no field by which they must remember thee, and that yet they will cherish Thy memory as their dearest inheritance—what more satisfying knowledge canst thou even hope for? And such is the knowledge bequeathed to us all.
59
“A Prayer” Let me do my work each day; And if the darkened hours of despair overcome me May I not forget the strength that comforted me In the desolation of other times. May I still remember the bright hours that found me Walking over the silent hills of my childhood, Or dreaming on the margin of the quiet river, When a light glowed within me, And I Promised my early God to have courage Amid the tempests of the changing years. Clouds of Glory by William Wordsworth Our birth is but a sleep, and forgetting; The Soul that rises with us, our life's Star, Hath had elsewhere its setting, And cometh from afar; Not entire forgetfulness, And not in utter nakedness, But trailing clouds of glory do we come From God, who is our home. The Brevity of Life Life is too brief Between the budding and the falling leaf Between the seed time and the golden sheaf, For hate and spite. We have no time for malice and for greed; therefore, with love make beautiful the deed; Fast speeds the night.
60
God’s Life O God of life, amid the ceaseless tides of change which sweep away the generations, Your love remains to comfort me and to give me hope. Around me are life and death, decay and renewal: the flowing rhythm that all things obey. I pray, give ear, O God, to my prayer, heed my plea for peace. In my time of trouble I call to You, for You will answer me. When pain and fatigue are my companions, let there be room in my heart for strength. When days and nights are filled with darkness, let the light of courage find its place. Help me to endure the suffering and dissolve the fear; renew within me the calm spirit of trust and peace. We praise You, O God, giver of peace to all who seek You. Amen. I lift up mine eyes to the hills, from whence commeth my help? My help comes from Adonai, Maker of Heaven and Earth. Esah einai el he’harim, m’ayim, m’ayin ya’avo ezri Esah einai el he’harim, m’ayim, m’ayin ya’avo ezri Ezri, m’eem Adonai, Oseh shamayim v’aretz. Ezri, m’eem Adonai, Oseh shamayim v’aretz.

When I Die
When I die, give what is left of me away to children and old men that wait to die.
And if you need to cry, cry for your brother walking the street beside you.
And when you need me, put your arms around anyone and give them what you need to give me.
I want to leave you something,
something better than words or sounds. Look for me in the people I’ve known or loved,
and if you cannot give me away, at least let me live in your eyes and not in your mind.
You can love me best by letting hands touch bodies,
and by letting go of children that need to be free. Love doesn’t die, people do.
So, when all that’s left of me is love, give me away.
