Interaction of Laser Light with Tissue
 Photothermal effect
 Photomechanical effect
 Photochemical effect
 Photoablative effect
Photothermal Effect
 Rise in temperature following
absorption of laser energy, potentially denaturing proteins and inactivating
enzymes.
 Tissue whitening due to
increased optical scattering
 Tissue shrinkage
Photochemical Effect
Photochemical effects occur when a laser beam’s photons interact with tissue cells. Photon interactions can result in changes in cell chemistry, or the conversion of individual molecules to one or more different chemical molecules, which in turn may result in damage to cells and tissue. Photochemical effects depend greatly on wavelength.
Photoablative Effect
 Explosive vaporization of intracellular water(Water undergoes a x1000 increase in volume on vaporization) Tissue water acts as a heat-sink, limiting the temperature to 1000C The remaining tissue is thermally coagulated to a shallow depthAblationis removal of material from the surface of an object by vaporizationprocesses.
Photomechanical Effect
Laser fragmentation of a kidney stone
Effect of Q-switch treatment laser on a tattoo

Wavelength Specific Therapy

Anatomy of Eye
 Cornea = Lens Cover
 Iris and Pupil = Aperture of Camera
 Lens = Camera’s Lenses
 Retina = Camera’s Film
Four Vision Problems
Myopia สายตาสั6น Nearsightedness
 Nearby objects can be seen perfectly
while objects at distance appear blurry
 Light rays occur in front of retina
Four Vision Problems Continued
Hyperopia สายตายาว Farsightedness
 See objects at distance more clearly
Than nearby objects
 Light rays focus behind retina
Astigmatism Both objects far and near appear blurry
 Light focuses on multiple area
Four Vision Problems Continued
Presbyopia Common vision problem for
old age
 Dependent with reading glasses
 Human eye loss flexibility of the lens
 Weakening in the muscle
Four Vision Problems Continued
LASIK
Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis
 Changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser
LASIK continued
Uses a knife, called a microkeratome,
to cut a flap in the cornea
LASIK continued
 The excimer laser is then
 used to remove tissue and
 reshape the center of thecornea.
