1. Apart from speaking, what can help us to communicate

with people? Please explain using the examples mentioned.

We can use body language to help us. For example,

we sometimes move our heads up and down to say

“yes”.

2. How can we correctly understand nonverbal communication? One way to learn to correctly read the 65% of

communication that happens nonverbally is to be

clear about the body language in our own culture.

Page 11: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 4 Body Language 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

When we want to tell people what we think, we

can do it not only with the help of words, but also in

many other ways. For example, we sometimes move

our heads up and down to say “yes” and we move ou

r heads from side to side when we want to say “no”.

This way we communicate with others. When we us

e our bodies, without using words, it is called body l

anguage.

Body language is often as different as verbal l

anguage, therefore, there are many gestures that mea

n different things in different cultures.

Although it is natural to believe that everyone

communicates nonverbally the same way as we do, it

is important to remember the differences in cross-

cultural situations. Scientists believe that body

language speaks louder than words. It’s believed that

65% of communication happens nonverbally, or

without words. One way to learn to correctly read the

65% of communication that happens nonverbally is

to be clear about the body language in our own

culture.

Pre-reading Questions

1. When studying a foreign language, why should we learn more than just the vocabulary and the grammar?

2. How to make the American “OK” gesture? Why should we use the gesture with caution?

Page 39: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 4 Body Language 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

1. When studying a foreign language, why should we learn more than just the vocabulary and the grammar?

To communicate successfully in speech, you must also learn the non-verbal language, or “body language” of that culture. “Body language” is a term used to describe facial expressions, gestures, and other movements of the body that send messages.

Pre-reading Questions

Sample

Page 40: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 4 Body Language 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

Nonverbal elements form a major part of any communication interchange. Some people would say it’s the most important part. According to one study, words convey only 7 percent of a person’s message. Intonation and voice quality communicate 38 percent, and nonverbal cues transmit an amazing 55 percent. That means people pick up more from nonverbal communication than from words.

Pre-reading Questions

Page 41: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 4 Body Language 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

2. How to make the American “OK” gesture? Why should we use the gesture with caution?

Americans often indicate “OK” with their thumb and forefinger touching to form a circle. The same gesture means “money” to the Japanese and “zero” to the French. For that reason, people in a foreign culture must use gestures with caution.

The boy and girl glance around the crowded room. Their eyes meet. Embarrassed, they look away. Nervously, they steal glances at each other, turning away when they see the other one looking back. The boy acts cool, crossing his legs and affecting a casual air—even though his heart is beating wildly. The girl, obviously fallen in love, is afraid the boy will see her looking at him. A few seconds pass. He looks at her again. She starts to blush. He nervously looks at the ceiling and whistles softly to himself. They continue their cat-and-mouse game for a seemingly endless period of time. Will they ever talk to each other?

Paragraph 1

1

11

Page 47: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 4 Body Language 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

The fact is, they have already communicated a lot, without saying anything. When studying a foreign culture then, it makes sense to pay attention to how people use nonverbal cues.

Paragraph 2

3

Page 48: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 4 Body Language 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

Gestures comprise a major form of nonverbal communication. In contrast to sign language, used by deaf people to communicate messages, gestures function as visual icons which represent a single idea. But often these gestures are embarrassingly culture-bound. For example, when the Maoris of New Zealand stick out their tongue at someone, it is a sign of respect. When American schoolchildren make the same gesture, it means just the opposite. Also, Americans often indicate “OK” with their thumb and forefinger touching to form a circle. The same gesture means “money” to the Japanese and “zero” to the French. For that reason, people in a foreign culture must use gestures with caution.

Paragraph 3

Page 49: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 4 Body Language 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

Considering the influence of nonverbal communication, we never really stop communicating. How we walk, how we stand, how we use our hands, how we position our bodies, how we show emotions—all send a message to others. That’s why it’s possible, as the saying goes, to “read someone like a book”. And if you read the person right, as the boy and girl in the crowded room later discovered, it just might turn into a love story.
