    ABSTRACT The purpose about pow er sy stem optimal dis-patch was stated and the development o f pow er sy stem opti-

    mization in recent tw enty yea rs was r eviewed from tw o a s-

    pects, classic economic dispatch and optimal pow er flow in

    this paper. Some problems about each dispa tch method dur-

    ing development were analy zed and countermea sures for

    these problems were provided. Because of its fast computa-

    tion speed, classic economic dispatch w as often used for on-

    line dispatch. Compared to classic economic dispa tch, the re-

    sult of optimal pow er flow w as very precise but computa tion

    procession is slow . So this method can 't be used in real-time.

    Some urgent problems in the two methods w ere put fo rwa rd

    at the same tim e.
