researchers say.Cuttlefish embryos develop in eggs that stretch and become translucent
slightly penetrable by light rays . Embryos with crabs Crabs see there nearby hatch into
youngsters with a distinct preference for eating crabs, says Ludovic Dickel of theUniversity
of Caen in France. Without that pre-hatch view of crabs, the little cuttlefish prefer to attack
shrimp, he and his colleagues report in the July Animal Behaviour. That leads the
researchers to conclude that the cuttlefish embryos must peer through their eggs, and
learn to recognise their prey, a behaviour which will help give them a head-start in life. The
preference develops from sight alone, Dickel says.

The eating habits of Adelie penguins in Antarctica changed significantly about 200 years ago,
according to chemical analyses of the birds' eggshells. Scientists attribute the shift in diet to
whaling and other hunting in the region.
The ratios of carbon and nitrogen isotopes in an animal's tissues--including bones and
eggshells--can provide a wealth of information about its eating habits, says Steven D. Emslie,
a paleontologist at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington. Recently, he and William P.
Patterson, a geochemist at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, looked at the
chemical composition of Adelie penguin eggshells laid during the past 38,000 years to see
whether the birds' dietary habits had changed.
Surprisingly, says Emslie, climate change 10,000 years ago, at the end of the latest ice age,
didn't significantly affect the birds' diet. In the past 200 years, however, the chemical
composition of the penguins' eggshells made a dramatic shift to lighter isotopes of carbon and
nitrogen. Became animals higher in a food chain hold greater concentrations of heavy isotopes,
the change is clear evidence that the penguins' diet shifted from primarily fish to prey such as
krill.
The dietary change boils down to the availability of prey, Emslie and Patterson speculate in the
July 10 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. During the 19th century, the

population of krill in southern seas exploded after Antarctic fur seals, prodigious consumers of
krill, were hunted nearly to extinction. That slaughter, followed by widespread killing of
krill-eating whales during the 20th century, enabled the tiny crustaceans to proliferate nearly
unchecked, says Emslie.
"It's rare to see such catastrophic changes [in diet] in such a short period" says Keith A.
Hobson, an ecologist at Environment Canada in Saskatoon. The changes "point to a large shift
in the ecosystem," he notes. Even so, Hobson adds, it's not clear why abundant krill would
cause penguins to suddenly shift from fish to what had previously been a secondary food
source.
The team's results are "very compelling evidence of a terrific change" in penguin diet, says
Charles H. Peterson, a marine ecologist at the University of North Carolina's Institute of Marine
Sciences at Morehead City. "It's a cosmic irony of foodweb ecology that a rare species is only
rare because it's kept in check by predators," he adds. "Maybe krill was one of [the penguins']
favorite foods all along."
Modern-day fishing around Antarctica has depleted fish stocks there. Meanwhile, krill
populations have declined as much as 80 percent in the past 2 decades. Understanding why
penguin diets changed 2 centuries ago may be vital for their future survival, says Emslie.

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is a key component of the Southern Ocean food
web. It supports a large number of upper trophic-level predators, and is also a
major fishery resource. Understanding changes in krill abundance has long been a
priority for research and conservation in the Southern Ocean. In this study, we
performed stable isotope analyses on ancient Adlie penguin tissues and inferred
relative krill abundance during the Holocene epoch from paleodiets of Adlie
penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae), using inverse of 15N (ratio of 15N/14N) value as a proxy.
We find that variations in krill abundance during the Holocene are in accord with
episodes of regional climate changes, showing greater krill abundance in cold
periods. Moreover, the low 15N values found in modern Adlie penguins indicate
relatively high krill availability, which supports the hypothesis of krill surplus in
modern ages due to recent hunt for krill-eating seals and whales by humans.

rats crowd monkey
GWD
In 1960's studies of rats, scientists found that crowding increases the number of attacks
among the animals significantly. But in recent experiments in which rhesus monkeys were
placed in crowded conditions, although there was an increase in instances of "coping"
behavior-such as submissive gestures and avoidance of dominant individuals-attacks did
not become any more frequent. Therefore it is not likely that, for any species of monkey,
crowding increases aggression as significantly as was seen in rats.
Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?
A.All the observed forms of coping behavior can be found among rhesus monkeys living in
uncrowded conditions.
B.In the studies of rats, nondominant individuals were found to increasingly avoid
dominant individuals when the animals were in crowded conditions.
C.Rhesus monkeys respond with aggression to a wider range of stimuli than any other
monkeys do.
D.Some individual monkeys in the experiment were involved in significantly more attacks
than the other monkeys were.
E.Some of the coping behavior displayed by rhesus monkeys is similar to behavior rhesus
monkeys use to bring to an end an attack that has begun.

Guidebook writer: I have visited hotels throughout the country and have noticed that in those
built before 1930 the quality of the original carpentry work is generally superior to that in hotels
built afterward. Clearly carpenters working on hotels before 1930 typically worked with more skill,
care, and effort than carpenters who have worked on hotels built subsequently.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the guidebook writer's argument?
(A) The quality of original carpentry in hotels is generally far superior to the quality of original
carpentry in other structures, such as houses and stores.
(B) Hotels built since 1930 can generally accommodate more guests than those built before 1930.
(C) The materials available to carpenters working before 1930 were not significantly different in
quality from the materials available to carpenters working after 1930.
(D) The better the quality of original carpentry in a building, the less likely that building is to fall
into disuse and be demolished.
(E) The average length of apprenticeship for carpenters has declined significantly since 1930.
The correct answer is D.

author's conclusion
YY Iron

Plankton generally thrive in areas of the ocean with sufficient concentrations of certain nitrogen
compounds near the surface, where plankton live. Nevertheless, some areas, though rich in these
nitrogen compounds, have few plankton. These areas have particularly low concentrations of iron,
and oceanographers hypothesize that this shortage of iron prevents plankton from thriving. However, an experimental release of iron compounds into one such area failed to produce a thriving
plankton population, even though local iron concentrations increased immediately.
Which of the following, if true, argues most strongly against concluding, on the basis of the
information above, that the oceanographers hypothesis is false?
A. Not all of the nitrogen compounds that are sometimes found in relatively high
concentrations in the oceans are nutrients for plankton.
B. Certain areas of the ocean support an abundance of plankton despite having particularly low concentrations of iron.
C. The release of the iron compounds did not increase the supply of nitrogen compounds in
the area.
D. A few days after the iron compounds were released, ocean currents displaced the iron-rich water from the surface.
E. The iron compounds released into the area occur naturally in areas of the ocean where plankton thrive.
