• At first, many Chinese were very glad to see Mulan become the topic of an American film.

• However, there are still a lot of Chinese having the opposite opinion because Mulan in the film doesn’t like a real Chinese.

• China in the minds of those foreigners is different from the real China .In China ,King is the authority , he can’t bow down to Mulan just like what the movie shows.

The dragon

It is so small that we think it likes a worm. However,in our eyes, dragon is a symbol of sacrosanctity( 神圣不可侵犯之物 ).

Western Dragon : Western dragons are usually portrayed as evil, mean, and bloodthirsty. They were also known to have huge hoards of gold and jewels hidden in their lairs.

Having unrivaled wisdom and power the dragon symbolized the Emperors of China themselves, who were actually called dragons. Chinese dragons are portrayed as good, kind, and intelligent.

Lung and totem( 图腾）• Totem: it is an American Indian’s dialect. The core of tote

m is that when people think some animal or plant has similarity to their blood relationship, they will consider it as the symbol of their phratry.

• Lung has been the totem since the time of YAO,SHUN,YU. Till the Qin and Han Period, the appearance has been formed, that is: long horns, sharp ears, wild beast’s feet and serpent’s body.

• The emperor is called “son of lung” since the Qin and Han Period. Lung has three implied meaning: divine beast of god; soul of emperors; lucky .

Chinese hun( 匈奴 )

They are very strong and rude,and they just look like beasts rather than human beings.This will make the foreigners think that our minority are brutal.

The garden is in a style of Ming and Qing Dynasty, esp. in the south of china.

In fact, few people in the past could own such a big house with a garden.

review• From the movie we can briefly know some cultural differenc

es between us and foreigners. But this is not the least. There are also some other cultural differences among our life and language between us and the foreigners. In our language there are some words that foreign language don’t have, such as “steamed bun”( 馒头 ), “imperial examination”( 科举 ), “rural residents become urban residents”( 农转非 ), “mold rain”( 梅雨 ), “matchmaker”( 红娘 ). And all of these words reflect our geology, economy and some kinds of spiritual cultural that other countries don’t have. Meanwhile, although foreign language have the same words as ours, the meaning of them is different in many ways. Such as the words “fat”, in English language it contains some derogatory scenes. And “dog” has the meaning of “lucky”, while Chinese doesn’t have this kind of meaning. Dog is just a dog.

In Chinese ， pine, bamboo and plum symbolize a person of high morals. But this meaning in English doesn’t exist.

In our life there are too many examples to mention. It mainly refers to the aspects of call, greet, extending thanks, honorific, humble words, privacy and taboo. They all deserve the foreigners’ attention. And in order to learn a veritable Chinese, they often have to consider that whether they should be modest when someone praises you, or whether they should be like the Chinese person do talking about their pay, their age and their marriage freely to others and so on.

As a Chinese teacher for the foreigners in future we should know the culture of other countries. It conforms to the saying that know the enemy and know yourself, and you can fight a hundred( 知己知彼，百战不殆 ). We should have this idea in our mind that only if the foreigners know our culture as well as we know theirs could we communicate with each other successfully and smoothly and could we get our responsibility.
