소프트웨어 분야에서 성공의 가장 중요한 특징은 언제나 혁신에 있었다.

• 최첨단 기술을 생산하여 차별화

• 신기술을 시장에 공급하여 시장 주도 기업으로 교두보를 선점

• 연구 개발, 생산, 물류, 마케팅, 영업 지원 그룹 전반에 걸쳐 프로세스 혁신과 신기술 도입을 통한 조직 효율성 개선

• 제품의 혁신이든, 프로세스의 혁신이든, 결국 혁신을 통해서 완성 된다.

at a macro level, innovation drives new business and improves business effi-ciency. The people who drive the innovation that drives business advantage are rewarded. In every software segment, from the tiniest basement startups to the largest multinational conglomerates, the innovators earn more money and have more advanced positions, on average, by a large margin.

In 2006, the IBM Institute of Business Value surveyed 968 CEOs, with the goal of understanding CEO priorities. The survey clearly called out that growth through innovation that matters is a dominant consideration. Eighty-seven percent recognized that their organizations needed to make fundamen-tal changes to respond to external forces in the next two years. Seventy-eight of the CEOs surveyed felt the innovation they needed would require changes to both their business models and their technology, “creating new opportu-nity for IT to participate directly with business in driving the innovation agenda.” Similarly, a March 2005 study published in the McKinsey Quarterly surveyed 9,345 global executives and found that ability to innovate over-whelmingly topped executive opinion as the critical capability required for business growth. Figure 17.1 shows a summary of their findings, with the ability to innovate clearly dominating other important concerns.

혁신의 기회

• 혁신을 통해 큰 보상을 얻을 수 있다는 점은 분명!

• 하지만 우리가 궁금해 하는 것은 “어디에서 혁신을 이뤄낼 기회를 찾는가?”

• 대부분, 프로그래밍 분야라면 혁신의 기회가 매우 많다고 생각

• 혁신의 기회는 어떤 기회가 주어지는가 하는 것보다, 스스로 자기 일을 어떻게 바라보는지에 좌우됨

• 일반적인 혁신의 기회

• 프로젝트 수행중, “더 나아질 수는 없을까?” 라는 질문을 던질 때

• 자신이 하던 업무와 무관하지만, 자신이 속한 조직에서 신기술로 개선할 수 있는 부분이 있는지 생각

• 실패할 때마다 뭔가 배우기 마련, 빨리 실패하고 자주 실패하는게 좋다.

• 소프트웨어 분야에서는 혁신할 기회가 많다. 실패하더라도, 다른 프로젝트에서 성공할 가능성은 충분

• 여러 사람이 모여서 빠르게 아이디어를 만들어 내는 것

• 효과 브레인스토밍을 위한 원칙

• 바보 같아 보일지도 모르는 아이디어도 편하고 자유롭게 말할 수 있는 분위기 조성

• 아무리 바보 같은 생각도 받아 들일 수 있는 자세가 필요

• 그렇지 않을 경우 참여자들이 의견을 내는 것을 꺼려 함

• 혁신적인 아이디어는 대부분 들뜬 시기, 좌절의 시기를 거쳐 원숙기에 이르는 사이클을 거친다.

• 약속의 시기

• 좌절의 시기

• 원숙해 지는 시기

• Ex) GPS, 스마트 폰

• 성공적인 혁신에서 가장 핵심적인 것

• 자신이 추구하는 혁신도 이러한 사이클을 거치게 될 것임을 인지

• 기울기를 최대한 완만하게 만들고, 좌절의 시기를 최대한 살살 지나갈 수 있도록 하는 것

• 이를 위해서는 그 기술로 할 수 있는 것과 할 수 없는 것을 분명하게 인식하는 것이 중요

• 제대로된 혁신가라면 기술이 약속하는 기대감은 불러일으키면서, 현 상황에서의 그 기술에 한계에 대해서 끊임없이 전달할 수 있어야함

Consider any technology you know. In most cases, you’ll see that it has gone through a similar cycle. Global positioning systems (GPS) were expected to revolutionize our ability to navigate, know where our children are, and even help us locate our keys. Those were the early days of GPS, the height of the promise. We soon realized that satellite connectivity was spotty, that GPS didn’t work indoors, and that GPS devices were too expensive and bulky for many consumer uses. We sank quickly to the point of crushed expectations. GPS continued to improve; newer and more satellites were launched, greatly improving reception; and the market came to understand the places were GPS could be trusted (navigation). The technology matured and created realized value. Similarly, when speech recognition entered the market, with the prom-ise of replacing the keyboard, it quickly crashed to the point of crushed expectations when it struggled with punctuation, background noise, poor enunciation, the nuances between similar words, and accents. It later matured as a technique that was valuable to specific limited domains when aided by the notion of voice training. Expectations were adjusted to position the tech-nology as a way to reduce the need for human typing and editing rather than a tool to replace them, and a modicum of business value was realized.

A key to success in innovation is knowing that your technology innova-tions will pass through this curve and striving to minimize the slope and depth of the point of crushed expectations. 99%의 노력

• 아이디어가 좋은 사람은 많다.

• 하지만, 그 아이디어를 끝까지 밀어 붙일 수 있는 사람은 별로 많지 않다.

• 혁신은 엄청나게 중요하고, 경력을 계발하는 데 있어서 매우 중요한 촉매 역할

• But, 의미 있는 성과를 일궈내지 못하면 의미가 없다

• 항상 예상하지 못한 기술적인 장벽이나 개인적인 의심을 맞닥뜨림

• 혁신을 창조로 이어나가는 일은 “먼가 있어 보이는 것을 중대한 가치를 지닌 것으로 바꿔 나가는 과정”
