Why do individuals in some populations tend to breed near relatives? The

benefits of cooperation with kin and costs of competition with kin are thought

to influence the evolution of dispersal behaviour. We tested the relative costs

of competing over reproduction with kin versus non-kin. Our results show that

competing with kin is actually less costly than competing with non-kin.
