형용사를 나열한 명사구에서                쉼표의 사용

쉼표의 사용 여부에 따라서 큰 의미 변화가 올 수 있다는 것 , 알고 계셨나요 ?

그럼 , 형용사를 나열한 명사구에서 쉼표 사용에 대해 알아보기 위해 다음의 예시들을먼저 살펴봅시다 .

앞의 예시에서는 쉼표를 사용하지 않았으며 , 뒤에 나온 예시에서는 쉼표를 사용했습니다 .

쉼표의 유무에 따라 다음 예시들의 의미가 어떻게 달라질 지 한 번 생각해보겠습니다 .

위 예시들의 공통점은 모두 형용사의 나열을 통해 수식한

명사로 끝나는 구 (phrases)라는 점입니다 .

그런데 , 앞에 나온 예시에서는 쉼표를 사용했지만 , 뒤에 나온 예시들에는 쉼표가 없습니다 .

• a fertile, well-drained, and level piece of land

• a large, nocturnal, and furry rodent

• a shiny, hard, smooth, and thick layer

• the cheapest technically feasible solution

• a locally grown early-maturing cultivar

왜 그럴까요 ?

첫번째 예시에서 각 형용사들은 뒤에 나오는 명사를 단독으로 수식합니다 .

쉼표가 있는 경우• a fertile, well-drained, and level piece of land ( 비옥하고 , 배수가 잘 되며 , 평평한 토지 )

• a large, nocturnal, and furry rodent ( 크고 , 야행성이며 , 털이 많은 설치류 )

• a shiny, hard, smooth, and thick layer ( 번쩍이고 , 단단하며 , 두꺼운 층 )

등위형용사 (Coordinate adjectives) 라고 불리는 , 이렇게 나열된 형용사들의 특징은

1. 형용사들의 순서를 바꾸거나

2. 인접한 형용사들 사이의 쉼표를 ‘ and (그리고 )’ 로 바꾸어도

3. 문법적으로 어색하지 않은 구가 되며 의미가 변하지 않습니다 .

두 번째 예시의 문장에서는 단어를 바꾸거나 재배치하는 것이 보다 어렵습니다 .

쉼표가 없는 경우• the cheapest technically feasible solution ( 가장 저렴하며 기술적으로 실현 가능한 해법 )

• a locally grown early-maturing cultivar ( 지역에서 재배한 조생종 )

이 예에서는 단어를 바꾸거나 재배치하면 문법적으로 어색해지거나 의미가 변하기 쉽습니다 .

                                                                         두 개의 인접한 형용사가 하나의 단위를 형성하기

때문입니다 .

각 형용사 , 또는 한 쌍의 인접한 형용사가 명사만을 수식하는 것이 아니라

명사구 전체를 수식할 때도 

있습니다 .

예시의 첫 번째 문장에서

‘cheapest’ 는 ‘ technically feasible solution’ 을 수식하고 , technically feasible’ 은 ‘ solution’ 을 수식합니다 .

그러나 순서를 바꾸어 ,

‘a technically feasible cheapest solution’ 이나 ‘ a cheapest and technically and feasible solution’ 으로 표현했을

시

자연스럽지도 않고 문법적으로 옳지도 않습니다 .

두 번째 문장에서는 ‘ locally’ 와 ‘ grown’ 이 하나의 단위를 형성하고 ,

‘early and maturing’ 이 또 하나의 단위를 형성해서 , 첫 번째 단위가 두 번째 단위를 수식하고 있습니다 .
