Fathers of the First Six Ecumenical Councils In the Creed we profess belief in ‘One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Church.’ Ecumenical Councils consist of the Pope, Patriarchs & hierarchs of local Churches in communion with Rome are convened by the Pope-the last being Vatican II-to resolve major questions of church life & to clarify Church teachings. The early ecumenical councils dealt with heresy regarding the divinity of Jesus Christ, the divinity of the Holy Spirit & the role of the Mother of God in our salvation. The Emperor Constantine convoked the First Ecumenical Council of Nicea in 325 to combat the Arian heresy which denied the divinity of Christ. The 2nd Nicean Council formulated the Nicean -Constantinopolitan Creed & the restoration of the veneration of icons. The Council of Ephesus in 431 proclaimed the Virgin Mary as the Mother of God. The Council of Chalcedon in 451 delineates the human & divine natures of Christ. Also, local councils & synods of bishops are conveyed, either by the Pope, the regional hierarchy with approval from the Pope, or in the cases of Eastern Catholic Churches that have a Patriarchate, the Pope is informed of the Synod & it decisions. The synods deal with pastoral issues of local churches, discipline, and election of new bishops. The college of bishops includes the pope as a member and head, the college is invalid without him. ‘The Roman Pontiff, head of the college of bishops, enjoys the infallibility in virtue of his office, when as supreme pastor & teacher of all the faithful-who confirms his brethren in faith-he proclaims by a definitive act a doctrine pertaining to faith or morals…The infallibility promised to the Church is also present in the body of bishops when, together with Peter’s successor, they exercise the supreme Magisterium, above all in an Ecumenical Council. When the Church through its supreme Magisterium proposes a doctrine for belief as being divinely revealed & as the teaching of Christ, the definitions must be adhered to with the obedience of faith. This infallibility extends as far as the deposit of divine Revelation itself.’
