PRAYER OF THE DAY

L: Let us pray for perseverance in faith.

C: Almighty and everliving God, increase in us your gift of faith in your Son. Teach us to forget what lies behind and reach out for what is ahead, and run to win the crown of eternal joy.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FIRST READINGR: The first Reading for the

second Sunday after Pentecost is written in the 18th Chapter of 1st Kings beginning at verse 20.

1 Kings 18:20,21-39 CEVElijah's triumph over the priests of Baal

1 Kings 18:20-39R: 20Ahab got everyone together,

then they went to meet Elijah on Mount Carmel.

21Elijah stood in front of them and said, "How much longer will you try to have things both ways? If the LORD is God, worship him! But if Baal is God, worship him!" The people did not say a word.

1 Kings 18:20-3922Then Elijah continued: I am the

LORD'S only prophet, but Baal has four hundred fifty prophets. 23Bring us two bulls. Baal's prophets can take one of them, kill it, and cut it into pieces. Then they can put the meat on the wood without lighting the fire.

1 Kings 18:20-39I will do the same thing with the

other bull, and I won't light a fire under it either. 24The prophets of Baal will pray to their god, and I will pray to the LORD. The one who answers by starting the fire is God.

"That's a good idea," everyone agreed.

1 Kings 18:20-3925Elijah said to Baal's prophets,

"There are more of you, so you go first. Pick out a bull and get it ready, but don't light the fire. Then pray to your god."

26They chose their bull, then they got it ready and prayed to Baal all morning, asking him to start the fire.

1 Kings 18:20-39They danced around the altar and

shouted, "Answer us, Baal!" But there was no answer. 27At noon, Elijah began making fun of them. "Pray louder!" he said. "Baal must be a god. Maybe he's day-dreaming or using the toilet or travelling somewhere. Or maybe he's asleep, and you have to wake him up.”

1 Kings 18:20-3928The prophets kept shouting

louder and louder, and they cut themselves with swords and knives until they were bleeding. This was the way they worshiped, 29and they kept it up all afternoon. But there was no answer of any kind.

1 Kings 18:20-3930Elijah told everyone to gather

around him while he repaired the LORD'S altar. 31-32Then he used twelve stones to build an altar in honor of the LORD. Each stone stood for one of the tribes of Israel, which was the name the LORD had given to their ancestor Jacob.

1 Kings 18:20-39Elijah dug a ditch around the altar,

large enough to hold about thirteen quarts. 33He placed the wood on the altar, then they cut the bull into pieces and laid the meat on the wood. He told the people, "Fill four large jars with water and pour it over the meat and the wood.”

1 Kings 18:20-39After they did this, 34he told them

to do it two more times. They did exactly as he said 5until finally, the water ran down the altar and filled the ditch. 36When it was time for the evening sacrifice, Elijah prayed: Our LORD, you are the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel.

1 Kings 18:20-39Now, prove that you are the God

of this nation, and that I, your servant, have done this at your command. 37Please answer me, so these people will know that you are the LORD God, and that you will turn their hearts back to you.

1 Kings 18:20-3938The LORD immediately sent fire,

and it burned up the sacrifice, the wood, and the stones. It scorched the ground everywhere around the altar and dried up every drop of water in the ditch.

1 Kings 18:20-3939When the crowd saw what had

happened, they all bowed down and shouted, "The LORD is God! The LORD is God!"

Second readingR: The second reading for today

is written in chapter one of Galatians beginning at verse one.

Galatians 1:1-121-2From the apostle Paul and from

all the LORD'S followers with me. I was chosen to be an apostle by Jesus Christ and by God the Father, who raised him from death. No mere human chose or appointed me to this work .

Galatians 1:1-12To the churches in Galatia. 3I pray

that God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ will be kind to you and will bless you with peace! 4Christ obeyed God our Father and gave himself as a sacrifice for our sins to rescue us from this evil world.5God will be given glory forever and ever. Amen.

Galatians 1:1-126I am shocked that you have so

quickly turned from God, who chose you because of his wonderful kindness.

You have believed another message, 7when there is really only one true message.

Galatians 1:1-12But some people are causing you

trouble and want to make you turn away from the good news about Christ. 8I pray that God will punish anyone who preaches anything different from our message to you! It doesn't matter if that person is one of us or an angel from heaven.

Galatians 1:1-129I have said it before, and I will

say it again. I hope God will punish anyone who preaches anything different from what you have already believed 10I am not trying to please people. I want to please God.

Galatians 1:1-12Do you think I am trying to please

people? If I were doing that, I would not be a servant of Christ.

11My friends, I want you to know that no one made up the message I preach.

Galatians 1:1-1212It wasn't given or taught to me

by some mere human. My message came directly from Jesus Christ when he appeared to me.

Luke 7: 1-10 CEVThe Roman officer's faith

Luke 7: 1-10 L: After Jesus had finished

teaching the people, he went to Capernaum. 2In that town an army officer's servant was sick and about to die.

The officer liked this servant very much. 3And when he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish leaders to ask him to come and heal the servant.

Luke 7: 1-10 4The leaders went to Jesus and

begged him to do something. They said, "This man deserves your help! 5He loves our nation and even built us a meeting place." 6So Jesus went with them.

Luke 7: 1-10 When Jesus wasn't far from the

house, the officer sent some friends to tell him, "Lord, don't go to any trouble for me! I am not good enough for you to come into my house. 7And I am certainly not worthy to come to you. Just say the word, and my servant will get well.

Luke 7: 1-10 8I have officers who give orders to

me, and I have soldiers who take orders from me. I can say to one of them, 'Go!' and he goes. I can say to another, 'Come!' and he comes. I can say to my servant, 'Do this!' and he will do it.”

Luke 7: 1-10 9When Jesus heard this, he was

so surprised that he turned and said to the crowd following him, "In all of Israel I've never found anyone with this much faith!"

10The officer's friends returned and found the servant well.

L: Jesus was amazed at the faith of the centurion when he asked for help. Let us bring our prayers to our Father, trusting that he will hear and answer us.
