General Information

• When are you required to file taxes? If you are claimed on someone else’s return-

Unearned income is over $1000Earned income is over $6100

If you are not claimed on someone else’s return- Gross income is over $10,000

If you are married- Unearned income is over $1000Earned income is over $6100If you earn over $5 and you file MFS

General Information

• Filing Status– Exceptions that allow Head Of Household when a

person is married• Married to a non-resident alien• Lived apart from spouse for last 6 months of the year

General Information

• Were you eligible to file a 1040A or 1040EZ?– 1040 required when:• Income from self-employment (farm or business)• Income from a partnership, trust, or real estate• You wish to itemize deductions• You received or paid alimony• Foreign income exclusion• Taxable income is over $100,000

Student Information

• Income earned from work– Student earns enough to have to file a tax return

on a W-2– Student receives a 1099-MISC over $600- must file

tax return

• Income from scholarships/grants– Student has a 1098-T that shows more

scholarship/grant than tuition

Parent Information

• Income earned from work– Comes from various lines, be sure to pay attention

to what the FAFSA asks for here

• 401K contributions if you collect W-2 forms– Box 12, code D, E, F, G, H, and S
