HELIUM BALLOONS: FLY FROM ROBBEN ISLAND
A fundraising floater

alloons? Check! Wind? Check! Support
crew? Check!
Green to go! Commence the pouring
of the water!
Matt Silver-Vallance (36) upsets the equi-
librium that keepshimgroundedbypouring
water out of a container.
Slowly he ascends into the sky above Rob-
ben Island. The sky itself doesnt give him
butterflies, but rather the imminent reunion
with terra firma on the main land.
A watery landing also gives him cold feet.
Matt reckons the chance to be eaten by a
shark is definitely not more than 50 %.
This brave and imaginative ex-pat could
at this verymoment be attempting his auda-
cious balloon flight from Robben Island.
Planning
Years of planning has now left the huge
crew waiting on the weather.
When they get the go-ahead, Matt will do
his best impression of 78-year-old Carl Fre-
dricksen in the animated movie Up! all in
the name of the Nelson Mandela Childrens
Hospital.
TygerBurger contacted the modern day,
philanthropic superhero Balloon-man to
hear what possessed him to try something
so preposterous. He laughs.
It was actuallymy best friends idea after
we had a couple of glasses of wine! Most peo-
ple generally think its crazy after hearing
the first sentence!
The SouthAfricanNavys CommanderDi-
eter Jones (who also takes part in the fateful
days events) confirms this when he says: I
thought it was a crazy idea initially!
Worthy cause
This fundamental notion is oft justified
once one sees the bigger picture (much big-
ger than oneman attached to 200 heliumbal-
loons floating over the sea).
As the naval commander substantiates:
Its a worthy cause and the Navy always
likes to get involved in fundraising events,
particularly given the connection to Mr
Mandelas legacy!
V To page 2.
Before 27 April, Matt Silver
Vallance will drift under South
African flagcoloured helium
filled balloons from Robben
Island to a beach somewhere
between Paarden Island and
Melkbosstrand.

In addition, the Robben Island Balloon Run
will enjoy the support of the Royal Cape
Yacht Club, which will be out in full force
on the day of the stunt.
Matt says the main drive behind his deci-
sion to tempt the gods of reasonwere the fact
that he worked for a long time as a para-
medic in the Western Cape ambulance serv-
ice and had the opportunity to interact with
the incredible Red Cross Childrens Hos-
pital.
So when the opportunity presented itself
to help raise funds for the Nelson Mandela
Childrens Hospital he grabbed it with both
hands.
One of these hands will take an airgun
with him into the air, which he will use to
shoot balloons when he wants to descend.
Thats right! He is going to shoot the bal-
loons one by one! He laughs again.
It is the best bb gun in the world!
As for the sharks, he jokedwithhisBritish
friends that there will be sharks patrolling
the water and literally waiting for him to
drop into the water.
Theyre convinced that I will be eaten by
a shark! Convinced! he says incredulously.
For the timebeing these fearswill not keep
him up at night. It is, however, tormenting
to wait for that weather update from the eN-

gemeenskap onderskraag.
Oortuiging, omdat sy vas glo in haar kon-
realiteits-televisieprogram, The Big Break
is,moet twaalf entrepreneursvanregoordie
of haar onderneming.
skep in n omgewingsvriendelike onderne-
Entrepreneurskap bruis deurAdele se are
doen.
Toe ek 6 was, het ek al begin om my sak-
entrepreneurskap geleer het by haar pa,
sery, Skoongewas Laundromat, in Protea

Huge veld fire finally calmed
A huge veld fire posed a serious threat to properties near Melkbosstrand on Saturday, but
diligent firefighters prevented this. PHOTO: MICHAEL HAYES
ANDR BAKKES
A huge veld fire which started near a Melk-
bosstrand dumpsite brought out the best of
firefighters in trying conditions on Satur-
day.
Theo Layne, spokesperson for the City of
Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, says
that the blaze could have caused serious
damage to property had it not been for the
sterling work done by the 78 firefighters and
the two helicopters.
The fire started at about 11:00 on Satur-
day and at about 20:30 it was under control
and at 04:45 the next morning it was finally
extinguished, he elaborates.
The gale force wind and the inaccessible
nature of the terrain made their task infi-
nitely more difficult.
He says that there were a total of 20 fire
fighting vehicles near the scene at any given
time.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but
Layne can confirm that it started near the
dumpsite close to the R27.
The fire quickly spread and soon the
Duynefontein veld on both sides of the R27
was burning.
Several propertieswere in danger of being
caught up in the flames, which could even
have resulted in injuries, but this was ulti-
mately avoided. According to Layne no one
sustained any injuries.

NADINE MOODIE
With the Easter bunny making his rounds
over the rainy Easter weekend that just
passed, TygerBurger caught up with the
Western Capes traffic chief, Kenny Africa,
to hear what the citys roads were like this
past weekend.
Africa says that the provinces citizens
need to be commended for their good behav-
iour over the Easter weekend.
Our people really assisted the traffic de-
partment this weekend and did not take ex-
tra chances with injuring peoples lives
with high speeds.
This year six people lost their lives on the
provinces roads over the long weekend,
which is a small decrease from other years.
Last year 11 people lost their lives and
the year before 13 people passed away on
our roads.
Even though the number of deaths is
much lower, its still six lives too many,
says Africa.
At 15:00 on Easter Monday Sir Lowrys
Pass welcomed 5 500 cars back into Cape
Town, where cars were seen lining up for
up to 7 km andmoving between 5 km/h and
10 km/h speeds.
Africa says that even though people were
generally well-behaved some individuals
still took chances on the roads.
This year 56 drivers were arrested for
breaking the law and driving under the in-
fluence of alcohol.
We also stoppedmore than 21 000 cars on
our roads of which more than 1 000 were
taken into police custody.
He adds that the highest speeds recorded
were on the N1s so-called Road of Death
near Beaufort West, with speeds up to
195 km/h.
Transporting drugs on the provinces
roads has become a terrible illegal habit of
the citys road users.
This weekend people were arrested with
magic mushrooms, dagga, tik andmandrax
in their cars.
Even though car safety education has
been in all forms of media, five buses and
three taxis were impounded, because they
were not safe.
And three drivers were also caught with
false documents in their possession.
This year the province also handed out
more than 3 000 summonses to the value of
more than R1,5 million.
Closer to home ER24s Werner Vermaak
reported that a 30-year-old man was killed
in a fatal car accident on Otto Du Plessis
Drive in Table View.
This came after the car overturned and
he was flung out. Three other passengers
were also injured and taken to hospital in
the process, but two were discharged from
hospital and are recovering.
Table View polices station commander,
W/O Matthee says that the driver was
chargedwith culpable homicide and drunk-
en driving.
Africa says that every life is precious and
that each accident has its own merits and
should therefore not be taken lightly.
We need to educate our people about
road safety. Our next aim is to ensure that
we have a safe festive season on our prov-
inces roads.

decreased when compared with last year. PHOTO: EDREA DU TOIT

16:00 the artists will be showcasing their
works. The exhibition, which is organised
by Batchelder, will benefit the I will be

TANDYLEE MARINUS
It is said that figure skating requires the el-
egance of royalty and the grace of a balleri-
na.
For sisters Amy-Jade and Michealynn
van der Vent of Blue Downs, the two seem
almost a perfect enough match.
The two who started skating at a young
age, share their love for ice-skating which
transpired after a switch from ballet.
Michealynn who has been skating since
the age of three, attends Tuscany Glen Pri-
mary school and Amy-Jade, skating since
the age of five, is at Malibu High School.
I felt a little pressured because I was
very young, said Amy-Jade.
They recently participated in the Trophy
DEcosse held inDumfries, Scotland as part
of TeamSilhouette of theWesternCape that
represented South Africa.
Certain requirements had to be obtained
to qualify as part of the team.
We were very happy when we heard the
news and proud of our team being allowed
to showcase our talent overseas, they said.
Team Silhoutte returned triumphedwith
a third place and bronze medal.
This medal was one of our greatest
achievements. It took a lot of dedication,
hard work and sacrifice to be where we are
today, added Amy-Jade.
Their mother Mary-Ann, who is a huge
influence in their lives says: Availability
and being committed as parents, encourag-
es them to persevere. I am so proud of them
being able to achieve what they have
achieved. I am running over with pride,
she said.
Although the sisters only looked to ice-
skating as a hobby, which they stopped be-
tween 2006 and 2008, 2010 saw them return
actively, after which they became part of
the national team in 2011.
The Van der Vent sisters engage in pri-
vate lessons, individual and synchronised
group lessons, most of which is done at the
GrandWest ice-rink.
We look forward to being on the ice and
to learn new stuff from the coach who al-
ways tells us to enjoy ourselves, said
Michealynn.
Brought up in a religious household, the
sisters strive on staying humble.
Parents should support their children
by playing an active role in their lives,
said Mary-Ann.
The two prove to be more than just ath-
letes; Amy-Jade plays the drums while
Michealynn practises the piano.
I only played the keyboard and started
with the smaller songs, but started taking
it seriously this year, said Michealynn.

Star treats: On Easter Saturday Somerset Hospital was on the receiving end of sweet
treats when UCT Radio presenter Steven Taylor (left), and actors Hakeem KaeKazim
(known for his roles in the Fresca TV advert, Hotel Rwanda and XMen) and Jessica
Kennedy Parker (Smallville and 90210) handed out Easter eggs to patients at the hospital.
Both actors are in Cape Town to film the series Black Sails. With them is Somerset
hospitals communications officer Marilyn Philander.
The City of Cape Town has launched the
next step in the implementation of the my-
connect payment system for the MyCiTi
bus.
As of last weekend, all passengers will be
required to tap their cards against card
readers, called validators, when entering
and leaving the buses or stations.
Doing this will ensure better manage-
ment of the fare system. By requiring our
passengers to tap-in and out when they en-
ter and exit the system we can better moni-
tor the service and improve it to meet the
changing needs of our passengers. The in-
troduction of tap in and outwill also reduce
the possibility for people to evade paying
for travel on MyCiTi, said Brett Herron,
mayoral committee member for transport,
roads and stormwater.
Validators have been installed at MyCiTi
bus stations gates and the front of all feeder
buses. Passengers will be required to tap
their card twice: firstly, against the in
validator when boarding a bus or entering
a station and the second time is when dis-
embarking a bus or leaving a bus station
on the out validator.
Passengers who fail to tap when leaving
the system, or tap against the wrong ma-
chine, will be charged a penalty fee.
You will also be charged a penalty fare
if you do not have enough money on your
card to coveryour entire fare.Thiswill hap-
pen if your card has enoughmoney for your
R5,30 boarding fare, said Herron.
Fare evaders may be prosecuted and
charged a penalty fare of up to R210,00.
When you hold your card against the
validator and see a yellow light, remove it
andwait. A green light and one beepmeans
the transaction was successful, he ex-
plained.
The costs of trips will remain the same,
namely: R5,30 for feeder buses, R10,60 for
trunk buses, and R57,00 for the airport.

Teddy now leading HOGs
A group of 45 bikers got onto their Harley-
Davidson motorbikes recently on a charity
visit to the Fisantekraal Animal Welfare
(FAW) in Fisantekraal.
These bikers are all members of The Har-
ley Owners Group (H.O.G.) Tyger Valley.
HOGTyger Valley each year supports sev-
eralworthy charities, ofwhich the FAWwas
one this year.
In order to raise awareness, HOG Tyger
Valley has adopted a teddy bear, called
Harley Davey of Fisantekraal.
This cute little bear dressed in riding
gear goes on rides with his HOG family,
and even has his very own Facebook page!
Hes said to have come from Fisantekraal,
and is a big animal lover with everything
he does and everywhere he goes, he raises
funds and awareness for the FAW team.
On Saturday 16 March, the group of HOG
Tyger Valley brought donations for the
shop, visited the bathing container, the food
container and the treatment room, where
vaccinations are done once a month.
The members of HOG Tyger Valley have
now started putting some projects inmotion
to help FAW.
The FAW is a community-based, non-prof-
itable organisation working with the ani-
mals in Fisantekraal, Morningstar, and on
farms surrounding Durbanville.
The organisation was established in 1995
by a concerned Durbanville citizen, Rosa
Pheiffer, who discovered the dire situation
of the animals in Fisantekraal.
FAW now helps and advises residents
about animal care, provides subsidised food
and feeds animals, baths and dips dogs for
ticks, fleas, and helps sick animals, provides
kennels, assists with collars and runners,
vaccinates against rabies and other diseas-
es, and organises sterilisations.
Unwanted, neglected, or abused animals
are taken into foster care to try and find new
homes.
An average of 30 to 40 dogs are washed on
a Saturday morning by two or three volun-
teers, while up to 75 animals are vaccinated
on a vaccination day by only one person.
Between 10 and 15 animals are sterilised
every week. The FAW aims to sterilise over
1 000 animals this year.
All of this is done by 15 to 20 unpaid volun-
teers based in three shipping containers
with no electricity.
With the help of the Animal Anti-Cruelty
League, Tygerberg Animal Hospital, Dur-
banville Animal Hospital, and a small team
of dedicated volunteers, the conditions of
these animals are slowly, but surely improv-
ing.
However, with the increasingly tough
times, the organisation struggles to keep go-
ing. The organisation now also runs an in-
formal shop, selling donated items to the
people of Fisantekraal to raise funds.
The FAW always needs volunteers, funds,
and many other things and every little bit
counts. To find out how you can help, visit
www.faw.za.org, send an email to in-
fo@faw.za.org or phone 084 519 0380 or
076 799 0249.
A funworkshop on chillies and all youve ev-
er wanted to know about growing chillies,
will be hosted by the Durbanville Garden
Club on Saturday 27 April from 09:00 to 12:30
in the clubhouse at the Durbanville Rose
Garden.
Most people think you only get two kinds
of chillies green ones and red ones and
they burn!
I thought so too until I decided to investi-
gate, said Zelda Wahl of the Durbanville
Garden Club.
There are actually over 200 different
kinds of chillies available all taste different
and not all burn. They all add flavour and
can be included in most dishes, she said.
The subjects that will be covered will in-
clude how to grow chillies and add colour to
your summer garden, how to select chillies
for tasting and cooking.
There will be chilli products and herbs
and plants on sale.
The cost is R150 per person, including a
light lunch.
Book with Zelda on 082 888 0210 or send an
email to zwahlphoto@mweb.co.za before 20
April. Visit www.durbanvillegarden-
club.co.za for more information.

A once-off drop-in meditation class is
also presented on Wednesday 10 April
from 10:30 to 11:30.
The cost is R40 per class. Call 021 685

Harley Davey, the adopted teddy bear of HOG Tyger Valley, attracted a lot of attention when
some members of HOG Tyger Valley visited the Fisantekraal Animal Welfare organisation. On the
right are children waiting for their puppies to be vaccinated.
Easter at GrandWest casino is always
something to remember. There will be
plenty of Easter magic until 7April for
kids.
Every day a colourful cast of buskers
will bring smiles to the faces of little visi-
tors in the childrens entertainment ar-
ea.
Youngsters can get into the spirit of
the season by having their faces painted
while the balloon sculptor will create a
wide variety of balloon animals and fig-
ures, especially for them. Regardt Laub-
scher the magician will literally hold
kids and their parents spellbound with
a versatile and energetic show packed
with magical tricks and comedy.
Themime artistwillmimic passers-by
while the lofty stiltwalker, colourful
clown and nimble-fingered juggler and
uni-cycler will all add to the spirit of fun
and festivity.
The fire and hula hoop dancer will
have youngsters in awe at her perform-
ance with fire and her mastery with a
hoop. Equally fascinating will be Dor-
othy and Jenny the acrobats who will
generally whirl and twirl, contort and
cavort in a performance that showcases
their strength and agility.
And the favourite character at this
time of year will undoubtedly be the
friendly and very interactive Easter
bunny who is looking forward to meet-
ing his young fans at GrandWest. For
adults not quite prepared to bet their

City authorities last week again appealed to
members of the public to stay well clear of
the Seli 1 wreck lying along the Table View
coast.
The South African Navy in a joint opera-
tion with several of the city departments
and environmental agencies weakened the
wreck recently through a series of explo-
sions.
Given that the wreck has been substan-
tially weakened, it constitutes a danger and
is thereforeunsafe, saidWilfredSolomons-
Johannes of the citys disaster riskmanage-
ment centre.
The public is warned not to approach
within 100 metres of the wreck.
The weakening of the wreck was a
planned outcome of the operation, and was
intended to pave the way for ocean forces
to collapse thewreckonto the seabedduring
the coming winter.
The wreck will be continuously moni-
tored to determine if the objectives of the
operation have been met, and whether any
further work is required to break the Seli
1 up further.

Slagting op
ons paaie
duur voort
Dronkes, spoedvrate, kansvatters, uitge-
putte bestuurders en mense wat met
onpadwaardige voertuie ry, sorg jaarliks
getooi is.
by hul bestemmings aankom nie?
Voorts sorg die skedonkbrigade dat
motoriste in hul nabye omgewing in
gevaar is. Onpadwaardige voertuie hoort
baie moeg is? Die pad is n gevaarlike
slaapplek!
And let us not
grow weary of
doing good, for in
due season we will
reap, if we do not
give up.

King Solomon said: When the
sentence for a crime is not
quickly carried out, the hearts
of the people are filled with
schemes to do wrong. The
Hebrews, using Gods laws,
including the 10 command-
ments as a basis, had no
prisons and very little crime.
Petty crimes were dealt with
by the offender paying suitable
restitution to the victim (not
the government!) to compen-
sate for their loss plus incon-
venience, and convicted serious
criminals like rapists and
murders received the death
penalty, thus permanently
removing them from society.
So bring back the death
penalty for murder and rape!
Of course, this Godly and
common sense approach was
before the modern psychobab-
ble of the humanists and
atheists, as propagated by
liberal professors at our
universities. Darwin proposed
that we are all just evolved
pond scum, that we come from
nothing and we are going
nowhere. Well, if you tell
young people often enough that
life is meaningless, and that
they are just animals, dont be
surprised if some act like that.
Marx said we are all victims of
economic circumstances. Freud
said we are victims of sexual
desires.
Based on all this rubbish,
hardened criminals are now
seen as victims of forces
beyond their control, to be
treated for their mental
illnesses, instead of punished
for their crimes. So we have
murderers and rapists walking
the streets without fear of
punishment, or nicely catered
for in prisons with their
victims and others tax money.
It would seem that student
Charmaine (Mentally normal
people dont rape, TygerBurg-
er 27 March) is learning this
humanistic drive very well.
In the real world we all have
the ability to chose right from

What on earth happened to the

They were meant to start that

Am I supposed to wake up at

I am a bit worried about the
state of the pavement/walkway/
bicycle way in Ratanga street,
Century City. This is on the
western side of the road from
the new BMW Motors (SMG) up
to the next robot south to
north. It is filthy with rubble,
papers, plastic and other stuff
hanging around the plants.
Most of these plants had their
days some two years ago.
Behind the substation

we have bergies sleeping
there with the cushions still in
place. Grass is taking over with
roots picking up the tarred
pavement. Plants and roots
claim half of the pavement
already. The trees on this side
are making alarm systems
short out because the tops of
the trees are growing through
the electrical wires.
The pavements next to the

SLICE OF LIFE
wrong, we are free moral
agents. Criminals should be
held responsible for their
actions, and punished accor-
dingly.
Having said that, why should
people be actually encouraged
to sin? Mass murderer Ted
Bundy admitted that pornogra-
phy had fuelled his murderous
spree, and research has shown
pornography to be a factor in
many rapes and murders. So
why is the Sexpo allowed in a
country with our horrific rape
statistics?
Schools already have a
religion it is the religion of
the secular humanists. Why
should the Christians that
make up 70 % of this country,
not be allowed Christian
instruction in the schools and
universities? Why are only
atheist/socialist/humanist ideas
allowed? Ideas have conse-
quences, and the result of
Godless thinking is a Godless
society.

Sterrekykers leef passie uit
Besoekers van reg oor die land was by vanjaar se suidelike sterrefees. FOTO: PAUL KRUGER
DESIRE RORKE
tersfonteindam byeengekom.
dat daar so min lugbesoedeling is.
Vrydagnag se bedrywighede is ingelui
fie-opdragte. Verder kon sterrekykers wat
hul soek- en sketsvaardighede wou slyp, n
lys diepruimte-voorwerpe met behulp van
sterrekaarte soek en skets.
Benewensdie sterrekykery, is daar ook in-
teressante praatjies vir die naweek gerel.
Alan Cassels het gepraat oor konstellasie-
mitologie enEwardFoster oordie oorsprong
van die Kaapse berge.
Maar volgens hom was die grootste waar-
de van die byeenkoms die talle gespreksge-
leenthede en die uitruil van idees.
Menskon jouverwonder aandie vinding-
plaas. Vir inligting hieroor en ander sterre-
kundige gebeurtenisse, besoek die webwerf
by www.elfastronomy.com of www.psycho-
historian.org. of bel Eward Foster by

Die Mime Voir Couture-modevertoning van

werp reeds 15 jaar lank klere vir mimiek-
kunstenaars en sy is met een getroud.
Die modevertoning sluit in die vertoning
van die ontwerpe deur top-Suid-Afrikaanse
ontwerpers soos Sauerman, Kobus Dippe-

ROWENA HENDRICKS
n Plaaslike sjef kan binnekort sterstatus
bereik wanneer hy as een van 20 finaliste
aan n nuwe werklikheidskookprogram
gaan deelneem.
Kokkedoor, n nuwe kookkompetisie-
reeks met 13 episodes, is reeds verfilm en
word vanaf 11 April op kykNET uitge-
saai.
Johan Breedt (34) van Loe-
venstein s, hoewel hy al
voorheen aan sjefkompeti-
sies deelgeneem het, was dit
n nuwe uitdaging om aan
dieKokkedoor-kookkompeti-
sie, wat n realiteitsprogram
is, deel te neem.
Ekhet aandie kompetisie
deelgeneem ommy te geniet,
nie noodwendig om pryse te
wen nie dis net n bonus.
Dis vir my belangriker
om te netwerk en goeie men-
severhoudinge op te bou ty-
dens sulke geleenthede, s
hy.
Breedt is tans sjef by dieWestin Execu-
tive Club-restaurant in Kaapstad. Hy het
n kookdiploma en het voorheen sy kook-
vaardighede by onder meer die 12 Apost-
les-hotel in Kampsbaai, die Ritz-hotel in
Londen en Lanzerac-hotel op Stellen-
bosch geslyp.
handel.
Ek het ingeskryf en moes n nuwe
spyskaart uitwerk, asook n motivering
deelneem, s hy. Hierna is hy vir n on-
derhoud teruggeroep en moes hy n piek-
niekmandjie met ses verskillende soorte
fynproewerskos daarin voorberei.
Daar was verskeie kossoorte in die
mandjie soos gepekelde eend, alles nos-
talgies Suid-Afrikaanse disse, s Breedt.
Daarna moes hy n kameratoets doen,
gend. Hy is gekies as n finalis.
Hoewel Breedt nie mag s hoe ver hy
in die kompetisie gevorder het nie, be-
klemtoon hy dat sy huidige werkgewer
(die Westin) baie ondersteunend is.
Hulle het my die kans
gegun om as ambassadeur
vir beide myself n die res-
taurant op te tree en ons
wyd te bemark, s hy.
Gemakkos is maklik om
vandag te bedien, maar ek
hou vas aan die nostalgiese
kosse met my voete vas aan
die Suid-Afrikaanse, Afri-
ka- en Kaapse kultuur.
Volgens die vervaardi-
gers van die reeks gaan die
deelnemers onder meer
langarm dans, basaar hou,
skoustalletjies pak en bil-
tongmaak, poedings bak en
padkos pak, asook brood
knie en koek bak. Die reeks speel af in die
plattelandse karoodorpie, Prins Albert.
Vandiepryse sluit ondermeerkontant,
kookboeke en die kykNET-Kokkedoor-ti-
tel in. Sowat tien onthoukokke en tien
kinkelkokke neem aan die reeks deel.
Dit (Kokkedoor) is regtig n baie unie-
ke werklikheidreeks propvol kinkels
en verrassings in elke liewe episode. Dis
eg Suid-Afrikaanse nostalgie,waar saam-
wees die middelpunt is, maak nie saak
watter kos jy eet nie, s Breedt. Hy s sy
gunsteling resep is n vierdag-bolognaise-
uitgesaai.

The colourful, abstract photograph of recy-
cling material by a young girl from Durban-
ville impressed the judges of the National
Geographic KIDS Young Photographers
competition to such an extent that she was
chosen as the overall winner.
Lisa Taberner (13) entered her photo-
graph in the category I Love South Africa.
I took the photo on a field trip to a waste
management plant. It is of milk cartons that
have been compressed and baled and are
ready to be recycled, Lisa explained.
She titled the photo I love South Africa,
so please reduce, reuse and recycle!
Lisa, who is home-schooled, did not plan
to take a winning photograph. I have never
really been into photography, but have been
taking spur-of-the-moment photographs
since I was nine years old, she said.
But, she now plans to take her photogra-
phy far more seriously.
She likes to take photographs of people,
but prefers close-up, abstract photographs
of nature.
I thought the patterns of the recycling
photograph made a cool picture, she
said. And so did the judges.
The judges commented that her picture
of packaging compacted for recycling was
a remarkable graphic image.
Because she cropped the image to the
bundle, there is no reference for scale and
youre not sure right awaywhat youre see-
ing. At first it looks almost like stained
glass, they said.
Lisa won a state-of-the-art Nikon D3100
camera, a family holiday at Sabi Sabi, all-
inclusive flights on Airlink and an amaz-
ing SanDisk hamper.
Marinel Wegman (13), a Grade 8 learner
at Durbanville High School, was chosen as a
finalist in the Thats funny category for her
photo of a donkey she spotted and photo-
graphed whilst at the Donkey Sanctuary in
McGregor. As a finalist she received a years
subscription toNGKids, a Nikon camera and
binoculars, as well as a SanDisk hamper.
Wewere again impressed by the high level
of skill shown this year, saysNGKids editor
Fiona Thomson.
The quality of photographs improves with
each year! she said.
The finalists and winners are featured in
theMarch issue ofNGKIDSwhich is current-
ly on sale.
