Construction output contributes some 7% of GDP
The sector is worth about 110 billion per annum. 3 Main Sectors:
1. commercial and social, 49 billion (20bn public, 29bn private)
2. residential, 42 billion (14bn public, 28bn private)
3. infrastructure, 18 billion (7bn public, 11bn private)
Infrastructure is typified by civil engineering works, long overallproject durations and major programmes of renewal/maintenance with 60% commissioned by the private sector and a large proportionof the public sector spending being through central Government
departments.
IUKs Infrastructure Cost review focussed on the 18bn ofinfrastructure spending, identifying savings of at least 15%.Similar savings should be achieved across all constructionsectors.

33/64
Core maturity model 0 - Unmanaged CAD probably 2D, with paper (or electronic paper) as the
most likely data exchange mechanism.
1 - Managed CAD in 2 or 3D format using BS 1192:2007 with acollaboration tool providing a common data environment, possibly somestandard data structures and formats. Commercial data managed bystandalone finance and cost management packages with no integration.
2 - Managed 3D environment held in separate discipline BIM tools with
attached data. Commercial data managed by an ERP. Integration on thebasis of proprietary interfaces or bespoke middleware could be regardedas pBIM (proprietary). The approach may utilise 4D Programme data and5D cost elements.
3 - Fully open process and data integration enabled by IFC / IFD. Managed
by a collaborative model server. Could be regarded as iBIM or integratedBIM potentially employing concurrent engineering processes.

COBie What is it? COBie is an information exchange
specification for the life-cycle
capture and delivery of informationneeded by facility managers.
COBie can be viewed in design, construction, and maintenance
software as well as in simplespread sheets.
This versatility allows COBie to beused all projects regardless of size
and technological sophistication Lyle A facility Manager

Early Contractor Involvement Level 2 BIM
each design team member creating and maintainingtheir own model as part of a federated model
still need to ensure fit between BIM models ofarchitects, engineers and other contributors

BIM Legal - Ownership Issues Separate from Intellectual Property Rights in
contributions, ownership and licensing of BIM federated
model
Is BIM federated model owned by BIM model manager orby client?
Client needs rights that extend throughout lifespan ofcompleted project
Need also to safeguard confidentiality of contributions in
view of greater accessibility of BIM model

BIM Liability Greater awareness of issues caused by other
parties
what impact on implied duty to warn impact on on-going design duties (and additional cost) where other parties errors or omissions are clear in

Duty of care and supporting PI insurance shouldnot change due to BIM Risks should be reduced
