NOISE BASICSWhy Absorption?- TNM Software provides for sound absorption in modeling, potentially reducing wall heights- Increased mitigation performance at little extra cost- Parallel Noise Wall Applications- Eliminate multiple reflections- Eliminate reflections to associated receivers

Why Double-Sided Absorption?- “Community” noise generated on the residential side of the noise barrier is absorbed, not reflected back to adjacent receivers.- Service roads/arterials/ramps etc…located on “receiver” side of barrier- Increased acoustical performance at no additional cost

Source: Source is the defined location where sound/noise is produced.

Receiver: A Receiver is the defined location where sound/noise is heard/impacted

NOISE REDUCTION COEFFICIENT (NRC):• An arithmetic average of an acoustic material to the nearest multiple of .05 of four sound absorption coefficients at frequencies of 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz. An NRC of 0 = perfect reflection and an NRC of 1 = perfect absorption. NRC is based on human speech frequencies therefore providing a simple scale of how well a surface material will absorb the human voice.

MASS:•The weight of a given material in a given volume. Generally the heavier or denser a material is, the more sound it will stop and the higher the Transmission Loss (TL) will be. STC should be min. 30, with minimum density of 4Lbs/sq ft.

NOISE MITIGATION:•Noise mitigation is a set of strategies to reduce noise pollution. Solutions can include walls, barriers, earth berms, zoning setbacks, zoning buffers, etc…

Noise Reduction Goal

•The amount of noise reduction that is desired. This value should be defined by a respective owner/DOT/State Highway Agency and should typically be in the range of 5-10 dB(A). Noise barriers must provide at least a 5-dB(A) reduction in highway traffic noise levels in order to provide noticeable and effective attenuation. A noise barrier should be designed to achieve the greatest reduction possible, but in no instance less than 5 dB(A).

•Properly-designed noise barriers should attain an IL approaching 10 dB(A), which is equivalent to a perceived halving in loudness for the first row of homes directly behind the barrier. For those residents not directly behind the barrier, a noise reduction of 3 to 5 dB(A) can typically be provided, which is just slightly perceptible to the human ear.

How Does a Noise Barrier Work?

• Noise barriers reduce the sound which enters a community from a busy highway by either absorbing the sound, transmitting it, reflecting it back across the highway, or forcing it to take a longer path over and around the barrier.

• A noise barrier must be tall enough and long enough to block the view of a highway from the area that is to be protected, the "receiver."

• Noise barriers provide very little benefit for homes on a hillside overlooking a highway or for buildings which rise above the barrier.

Custom Spans to 24 feet (7.31m) with standard spans of 12, 15 and 24 feet.
