Physicists, biologists, etc., from oen charge their colleagues from soersciences to misuse of concepts borrowed from the hard sciences (thiswas the focal point of the famous ‘Sokal hoax’). But it may be arguedthat philosophers and sociologists are not alone in their sometimesquestionable understanding of physical and mathematical notions. Asa matter of fact, physicists themselves have oen led the way towardsthese abuses, as will be shown by a detailed study of the so-called ‘Un-certainty Principle’ and other examples taken from modern physics.Further, the lack of philosophical and humanistic culture on the partof scientists from the hard disciplines, make them prone to pass asarrogant as poorly informed judgements on the endeavours of socialand human sciences. In fact, the present socio-political conditions ofscience production lead scientic knowledge to a permanent state ofimmaturity, inhibiting its epistemological recasting and favouring acareless relation with language. Science needs to recognise the fecundambiguities of ordinary parlance, and cannot shun away from metap-horical expression. More generally, no criticism coming from the hardsciences and addressed to the soer ones can be valid if it is not rst ofall an autocriticism.
