CTU DINING HALL REFURBISHMENT

ATRNStudio Císler - OthCo-authors: Tomáš Cirmaciu, Richard Pozdníček

The CTU Student House is outdated functionally as well as technically nowadays. Its energy is almost gone and it would be understanable to replace it with a new building. In spite of that we have chosen a way to save the old structure and remodel it into a contemporary campus institution. The existing concrete structure with vertical cores is cut out by a new spacious atrium based on the shape of the original one. The building is extended by a new northern addition, which houses a a healthcare center. The four-story concrete volume forms a plinth for a rooftop dining hall addition.A light steel structure of the rooftop addition is wrapped by a polycarbonate curtain wall. The dining hall capacityanditscomfortishighlyincreasedandcurrentbuildingfloorareaisreleasedforotherfunctions.

PLUG - IN TOWER

Plug-in tower works like a vertical system of lots for ‘modular housing’ in shipping containers. Exposed steel structural system can grow and adapt itself according to the need of society and changing housing needsinneighbourhood, whichmakestheTowerhigherefficientandforwardthinking.Through color-coded system of containers building displays changing demographics in the area and communicates with its surrounding environment.Plug-in Tower suggests use of shipping containers at the end of their voyaging lives. Each container has 8,000 lb of steel which takes 8,000 kWh to melt down. Recycling and repurposing used shipping container is a solution to both social and ecological problems.

FLOATING RESEARCH LAB

ATOSStudio Hájek-HulínContemporary cities are looking for new development areas. One of the area is a river Vltava. It is necessary to consider the river as a public space and think about temporary or floating structures.

ThebuildingisusedasahydrobiologicalresearchstationanditalsooffersafloatingpublicareaabovetheVltavawater level. The station informs and educates the visitors and the passers-by about the state of pollution and the underwater life. The form is inspired by a testing tube rack, which functions as aquariums separated into exposition area and research area in the lower deck. The pontoon is designed like a steel ship shell. It is made by cross-direction steel ribbs with other diagonal reinforcement. Aquariums are made from special transparent polymer material. Between the ribbs are balast tanks (like in a submarine). They provide a variability of the pontoon draft.
