Estar is used to talk about location of people and things.

• Examples-• ¿Dónde está el baño?• El baño está a la

derecha de la clase.

• ¿Dónde está mi gato Fluffy?

• Tu gato está en el zapato.

Estar is used to talk about conditions - (health, taste,

temporary appearance)

• Examples -• ¿Estás enfermo?• Sí. Estoy enfermo.

• El helado está bueno.

• Coquí está guapa hoy.

Present Progressive –ando/-iendo Verb Forms

• In English, the present progressive is

formed with the verb to be plus the -ing form of another verb.

• I am shopping. We are eating

• In Spanish, the present progressive is formed with the verb estar plus the -ndo form of another verb.

• Estoy comiendo. Estamos caminando.

-ndo Verb Forms

• -ar verbs:• Drop the -ar

ending and add -ando to the stem of the verb.

• Caminar becomes caminando.

• Andar becomes andando.

• -er and -ir verbs:• Drop the -er/-ir ending

and add -iendo to the stem of the verb.

• Comer becomes comiendo. Escribir becomes escribiendo.

• (When the stem of an -er/ir verb ends in a vowel, -iendo changes to -yendo.)
