ถ้าแสงตกลงที่ Fovea centralis ซึ่งเป็นบริเวณที่มีเซลล์รูปกรวยจ านวนมากจะท าให้ได้รับภาพที่คมชัดที่สุด แต่ถ้าแสงไปตกบริเวณ optic disc ซึ่งเป็นทางออกของเส้นประสาทออพติก และเป็นบริเวณที่ไม่มีทั้งเซลล์รูปแท่งและเซลล์รูปกรวยจึงไม่สามารถเห็นภาพที่ตกบริเวณนี้จึงเรียกบริเวณนี้ว่าจุดบอด (Blind spot)
