SAHAJA YOGA - AN UNIQUE DISCOVERY Sahaja Yoga is a simple, time-honored and veriable technique. It helps reduce stress and increase wellness. It brings better focus and helps people become moral, united, integrated and balanced. Anyone can do it. Its always free.
"Sahaja Yoga is dierent from other yogas because it begins with Self-Realization"H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi
Sahaja Yoga is based on self-realization, where the subtle inner energy of the practitioner is awakened, leading to a state known as thoughtless awareness. This thoughtless awareness, or meditation, occurs when the mind is not disturbed by thoughts, yet remains perfectly aware. It was discovered by Her Holiness Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi in 1970 and has since spread over 100 countries.
Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi is unique in the history of spirituality because she is the rst and only one to oer the experience of self-realization en masse. She declared that it is the birthright of all human beings - regardless of religion, race, nationality or circumstance - to receive their self-realization. She also insisted that one cannot pay for the truth or for self-knowledge, thus self-realization has always been, and continues to be, oered free of charge.
The practice of meditation in Sahaja Yoga is simple, and can be done at home or in the oce, alone or with others. Medical studies carried out in Australia and India have shown that the body's healing mechanisms are activated when one meditates in thoughtless awareness. There are no dietary restrictions or religious obligations in Sahaja Yoga.
Kundalini, a motherly and soothing spirtual energy resides at the base of the spine in three-and-a-half coils (kundala means coils) inside the triangular bone . When awakened, the Kundalini can be seen pulsating inside this bone, known as the sacrum, and also as it moves up the spinal chord.
Self Realization is the awakening of the Kundalini through the central channel, piercing through the six chakras above the sacrum bone and emerging at the top of the head (fontanelle bone area) as a gentle "fountain" of coolness. The individual becomes connected with the collective unconscious, (divine power) . The manifestation of the Kundalini energy is called vibrations.
Once awakened the Kundalini automatically puries the subtle body and thus dispel all the mental, physical and spiritual problems. Most illnesses are the result of damage to the chakras. Kundalini repairs them naturally, from inside without any side eect.
The word Sahaja (Saha+ja) means born with you. Whatever is inborn or innate manifests without any eort. Hence, Sahaja yoga is the name given to this system, which is eortless, easy and spontaneous.
We cannot pay for the divine love which is the absolute truth, which the sahaja yogi feels on the nger tips as vibrations of the cool breeze of the Holy Ghost.
The nger tips are related to the energy centers (the chakras). The chakras are responsible for our physical, mental, emotional being. If the yogis can correct their chakras, they can correct the chakras of others. Thus all the physical, emotional and mental problems are solved.
Those who are pure people have the necessary balance in moral life which ensures a widening central channel - Sushumuna nadi - of ascent for the kundalini.
To know the reality one has to enter the realm of meta science, beyond mind, which is only possible when we enter into collective super conscious through self realisation.
Innately within us resides the Spirit which wants to enlighten you, to give you the peace, the bliss and the joy of our being
H.H. SHRI MATAJI NIRMALA DEVI
WHAT IS SAHAJA YOGA

Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi was born on the Spring Equinox, the 21st of March 1923 at 12 o'clock noon, in Chindwara, a small village in the geographic center of India, in the family cottage. Her Father, Prasad Rao Salve, is a direct descendant of the Shalivahana's royal dynasty and was uent in 14 languages. He translated the Koran and remembered by many as an exceptional freedom ghter.
Her mother, Lady Cornelia who was highly educuted in sanscrit, urdu, and hindi. Cornelia was the rst lady to earn a masters degree in mathematics from Fergusson University; She discovered new algebraic methods which are still useful today.
Later on she came to be known by the multitudes by the name of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi - the revered Mother.
Her Father Shri Prasad Rao Salve was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. He was a member of Constituent Assembly of india and helped write Indias rst constitution. During 1942 Quit India Movement announced by Gandhiji, She played a daring role as a youth leader and was even arrested and put in jail along with other freedom ghters. She studied medicine and psychology at the Christian Medical College in Lahore. Shortly before India achieved independence, She married Sir C.P. Srivastava, one of Indias most dedicated civil servants, who was knighted by the Queen of England.
Shri Matai Left her heavenly abode on 23rd February, 2011. Shri Matajis Maha Samadhi is at Nirmal Dham, New Delhi.
Pondering on the many faceted problems confronting human beings, Shri Mataji on the 5th of May, 1970, on a lonely beach at Nargol (about 150km from Mumbai), visualized the process of en-masse Self Realization through which thousands of people could get this connection to their spirit and there by their inner transformation. Since 1970 Shri Mataji Nirmal Devi had kept a busy schedule, travelling around the world to teach the techniques of Sahaja yoga meditation. Large numbers of people, thousands and thousands of them, without distinction of race, religion, age or social status have acknowledged the value of Her teachings by establishing Sahaja Yoga centres in over 150 nations.

In the human body there are three types of nervous systems. The rst one is the central nervous system, the second one is the sympathetic nervous system, the second one is the sympathetic nervous system (which has a left and a right side) and the third one is the parasympathetic nervous system.
The entire system is governed by three primary vertical channels of energy(called "Nadis" in Sanskrit) and by seven main chakras. Our subtle system is fully activated only with the awakening of the Kundalini, which cleans and balances the entire system and enlightens the pure qualities of the chakras within us.

Sympathetic Nervous SystemThis nervous system is for emergencies. For example, if one sees a tiger in the forest, one starts running fast. At this emergency, the heart beat increases tremendously. But it goes back to normal by the working of the parasympathetic nervous system.
The left and the right sympathetic nervous system act in opposite directions as they are complementary
The Left Sympathetic Nervous System (Moon Channel)The left channel is nourished by a subtle channel called ida nadi which gives us the emotional side. In ones subconscious, the past is recorded beond this channel. With a healthy left channel, we are emotionally balanced. If we go too much into the left, we become lethargic and prone to self pity.
Right sympathetic Nervous System (Sun Channel)This system is nourished by a channel called pingala nadi. This channel works for the physical and intellectual work of human beings. A good right channel gives us drive and creativity. If we go too much into the right we become dry and critical.
Parasympathetic Nervous SystemIn the center lies the parasympathetic, which is formed by the loop from both left and right sympathetic nervous system. Wherever the sympathetic nervous system is exhausted because of emergencies, the para-sympathetic relaxes and nourishes these two channels and ultimately helps these.
Central Nervous SystemThis central channel is nourished by the Sushumuna Nadi (Channel of Ascent). Whatever we have achieved in our evolution is recorded and established in this central nervous system. When we are in the central channel, we are in balance and able to ascend. A strong central channel makes us serene and peaceful.
9
Now the stage today is to know that self realization gives you experiencesand then your faith is established. not blind butopen enlightened faith
When the Kundalini rises, these thoughts elongate. There is a space, very small, between the thoughts (Vilamba) which spreads out and a state of complete silence is created. Then we are in the present, but without any thoughts, without any worry, without any anger and we stand in present, which is the reality.
Actually, the reality is in the present because the past is no more and the future does not exist. When we are in this state, we become absolutely calm and peaceful. That is how we achieve inner peace. This peace can be achieved collectively when thousands of people get the awakening of their kundalini. With this light of the spirit, human beings can get rid of all articial and false things which haunt the human mind. Fear disappears from the mind. We enjoy every moment of our life and try to give the joy to everyone.
There are seven centres which are the subtle energy centres on the central path of our ascent (Sushumuna). These subtle centres were created within us through our evolutionary process. When this power, known as Kundalini, rises and passes through six centres, it nourishes these centres which are meant for our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual requirements. As these chakras get enlightened, we get our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual sides corrected.
Once the Kundalini pierces the last centre, we become one with the all-pervading power of Divine Love. A cool breeze of the Holy Ghost, like very beautiful vibrations starts owing through our nger tips. This is the rst experience of self realization.
The second experience is that when this Kundalini rises, she creates a state of Thoughtless Awareness (Nirvichar Samadhi). Human beings are always thinking about the future or about the past. If one tells them that you have to live in the present, it is not possible. One thought rises like a wave and falls and them another thought rises. These thoughts rise and fall, but they have only come from past or the future.
10
CHAKRAS
Mooladhara ChakraThe rst centre Mooladhara, meaning the support of the root, lies below the Kundalini. This chakra acts on the pelvic plexus which has the function of excretion. One of the function is sex. As this chakra is below the Kundalini, it is not pierced during the ascent. On the contrary, this chakra stops all its activity at the time when the Kundalini rises to give the union (Yoga) with the Divine power and we become innocent like Children.
Swadhisthan ChakraWhen this centre of Swadhisthan, which is the second centre, is enlightened, then our creativity increases tremendously. This Swadhisthan centre, on the left hand side, gives us the knowledge about the divine laws, how they act and how we have to harness these powers within us and how we should use them for the benevolence of oneself and benevolence of others.
It nourishes the left side by destroying the negative forces of the left side. These negative forces are created by the wrong practice of spirituality. This is the centre which is for pure Divine knowledge.
On the right side, it transforms the human intelligence into a very wise and balance awareness.
Nabhi (Manipur) ChakraAs the Kundalini rises into the third part, next to the Nabhi chakra, we become absolutely righteous. This area, which we call as the ocean of illusion, is enlightened by ten principles of mastery. The great masters have created these ten centres of commandments which are enlightened and we become holy.
There is no need to be strict in ones behaviors, we automatically become really spiritual. We innately feel the experience of universal pure religion within ourselves after awakening, when the Kundalini rises into this part called the ocean of illusion.
11
The Seven Chakras
When this centre is fully enlightened and established, we automatically become righteous, we respect our value system, we become moral, honest, non-violent, satised and innately compassionate.
Anahata (Heart) ChakraThis Chakra is placed on the central path behind the sternumbone. It has two other subsidiary centre, one on the left and one on the right. When we commit sins against the primodial Mother, that is, indulging in wrong type of perverted sex habits, alcohol, drug, internal stress from anxiety and fear of oppression, then this centre goes into jeopardy, making our immune system weak.
On the left hand side, it is the centre where God almighty is reected as the spirit, which enlightens the attention.
On the right hand side, this centre gets into trouble if the father is dead early or ill treats his son or daughter. On the contrary if we disrespect our Father, God Almighty, by thieving, cheating, deceiving, telling lies, violence, killing etc, then also this centre does not function well.
Vishudhi ChakraThe Vishuddhi chakra stands collectivity for communication. This centre when too active on the right side, results in the person becoming extremely arrogant and aggressive in his speech and behavior.
The left side of this Vishuddhi chakra goes into jeopardy when people feel guilty. Such a person becomes very shy timid and sly.
The centre of this Vishuddhi chakra is the one which when is in trouble lacks communication and the person cannot enjoy collectivity and cannot sing.
Agnya ChakraThe centre for Agnya is the centre at the crossing point of optic chiasma in the brain. The two balloons of ego and superego are placed in the opposite direction of this crossing at the optic chaisma, where the Agnya chakra is placed. This on the right hand side of the brain is the balloon of the ego and on the left hand side of the brain is the balloon of superego where all conditionings are stored.
12
When we think too much we get into problem with this centre, where the ego goes on bloating into bigger and bigger balloon and covers our complete discretion.
The conditioning that we have from childhood goes on mounting on the left side and creates problems. As we grow these conditionings also grow and sometimes they render very bad eect on our psyche.
Experience the fact that self-Realization is the ultimate goal of human life
H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi
Sahasrara ChakraThis centre is the most important centre. This centre is in thelimbic area. It is topped by the fontanel bone area which is the area for our last breakthrough, the Brahmarandhra.
When the Kundalini crosses over the seventh center, She piercesthorough the fontanel bone and this Kundalini joins or become sone with the all pervading power of Divine Love. As a result, we start feeling the cool breeze of the Holy Ghost. This is the rst time we feel the all pervading power of divine love. This is our Self Realization
On our ngertips, thereafter, we can feel our own chakras and the chakras of others. We can thus cure our own self through this self knowledge. Our human awareness achieves collective consciousness by which we know about the chakras of others. In the present when we ascend through the piercing of the Kundalini into all pervading Divine Love, we achieve the realm of super consciousness.
MEDITATIONMeditation is part and parcel of our lives. In the same way that human beings have to breathe, you have to meditate. If you do not meditate, you can never frow. You have to meditate. Unless and until you meditate you can never grow, you will remain same. The growth of a personality takes place only when you meditate and become deeper. Supercially is not going to help. This is why one has to meditate.
H. H. Shri Mataji Nirmal Devi13
MEDITATION AT HOMEAfter experiencing Kundalini awakening, it is important to nurture this seed, to help it growand establish. It is simply a matter of allocating a few minutes every day.
To start with, nd a place in your home whereyou can ist comfortably without beingdisturbed. It is not necessary to sit on theground; you can use a chair as well.
The photograph of Shri Mataji should be keptin from with an oil lamp or candle which hasbeen lit. Some incense can also be used.
Slowly raise your Kundalini and put Bandhan. Keep looking at Shri Matajis photograph and pray humbly Shri Matai, please take me deeper into meditation. You can also close your eyes after a few minutes.
You can continue to meditate for as long as you wish to, but do it at least for 10-15 minutes.
The session is ended with once again raising the kundalinin and putting g bandhan .
Meditation can be done at anytime of the day and as many times as you wish to.
RAISING THE KUNDALINING AND PUTTING BHANDAN
Place the left hand in front of
your lower abdomen, palm
facing the body
1
Raise the left hand up slowly, moving from the base of your
torso to the top of your head. While the left hand is rising, the
right hand rotates around it clockwise, (up from within, and
then down)(2)until both hands are above the head.
2
14
Then use both hands to tie a
knot (3).
3
Repeat this three times, once for each channel. The
third time, tie the knot three times (4).
A bandhan protects us and balances the energy in the left and right channels. It is helpful to put yourself in bandhan before and after meditation.
4
Hold the left hand out on your lap, palm upwards. Place your right hand over your left hip (A)
A
And slowly raise your right hand over your head and down the right side of your body. (B)
B
Then raise the right hand up the right channel, over your head where the kundalini is owing, and down the left side. (C)
C
This is one bandhan. Repeat this seven times, once for each chakra.
A bandhan protects us and balances the energy in the left and right channels. It is helpful to put yourself in bandhan before and after meditation. Give yourself a bandhan before and after getting in a car, playing sport, going to sleep, shopping, or anytime. It is very strong and comforting.
Meditation is the only way you can grow... because when you meditate, you are in silence. you are in thoughtlessawareness.
then the growth of awareness takes place
15
IMPORTANCE OF BHANDANAlso to protect yourself, you have to give yourself a Bandhan all the time. It is not you should say, Now I am all right you should not say that I am perfect, should not say Now I am a Sahaja Yogi never, never think like that. The moment you start thinking you are perfect, you are nished.
So before going out, you must give a proper bhandhan. Also before sleeping you must give a proper Bandhan. Put your attention to your Sahastrara then sleep
- H.H.Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi.
It is done to bring ourselves in balance. It is done before commencing meditation.
CLEARING LEFT SIDE IS RIGHTKeep the left hand out (palm upwards) towards Shri Matajis photograph, place the right hand on the earth or the palm facing towards earth, if sitting on a chair. Pray in your heart Shri Mataji, please remove all my problems of the left side. Sit in this posture for a few minutes.
CLEARING RIGHT SIDEKeep out the right hand (palm up) towards Shri Matajis photograph. Point the left hand upwards towards the sky, with the palm facing backwards. Pray in your heart Shri Mataji, please remove all my problems of the right side and give me balance. Sit in this poture for a few minutes
Then, open your hands and place them palm-upwards in your lap and be meditative position. Close your eyes. Try to keep your on top of the head (Sahasrara). Meditate quietly for at least 10 minutes. Witness your thoughts and let them go, slowly get into Thoughtless Awareness. After meditating, raise your Kundalini again using your hands and put yourself in Bandhan
16
BALANCING
THOUGHTLESS AWARENESS"So when the Kundalini rises you become thoughtless. If you want to think you can think it, but if you dont want to think you are in thoughtless awareness. Thats the samadhi state, thats the state of what you call is the meditative state, where rst is called as thoughtless awareness. In Sanskrit its called as nirvichara samadhi.
You have to be in thoughtless awareness to grow, otherwise you cannot grow. "
- H.H.Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi.
FOOT SOAKINGThis technique calms the over activity and cleanses the subtle system from within. It is best done in evening or night, before going to bed. It is done as follows.
Take a large bowl/bucket of ankle deep luke warm water. Add a handful of rock/crystal salt to it and keep a mug full o f clean water and towel to wipe your feet close by.
Light a lamp/candle in front of Shri Matais Photograph.
Raise Kundalini and put Bandhan. Sit on a chair and place your feet in the bowl. Sit with palms facing upwards towards Shri Matajis photograph and meditate for atleast 10-15 minutes. You can sit for as long as you wish to.
Before nishing, wash your feet with clean water in the same bowl and wipe them clean. Raise Kundalini and put bandan.
The water should no be touched but carefully thrown in the toilet and the bowl rinsed once again.
Self realization makes us humble...replace temper with compassion...the more innocent you are,the more blissful you will be
17

What is the best time of day to meditate?Early in the morning is usually the most ideal time. Evening time also we can easily bring ourselves into meditation. However, meditation can be done any time of the day depending on ones lifestyle.
How long should I meditate?Initially at-least 15 minutes to focus and nd the special silence inside and be in thoughtless awareness.
Where should I meditate? There is no strict rule about where to mediate but keeping an assigned meditation area in your home is ideal. Attending a group meditation in one of our centre at least once a week is highly recommended.
Should I sit on the oor? While sitting cross-legged on the oor is ideal, it is it not the only way. You can sit on chair also. Just remember to sit where you feel comfortable and not distracted.
Do I have to concentrate? You do not need to concentrate while meditating. Practicing forgiveness is one way to purify attention. Another is way to keep your attention on top of your head (Sahasrara).
Can children meditate?Yes, Children can meditate.
What are vibrations ? The manifestation of the Kundalini energy is known as vibrations, from the Sanskrit word Chatanya. After Self-Realization (the awakening of the Kundalini) these subtle vibrations can also be felt in the form of a gentle, cool breeze coming from the fontanel region of the head (on the top of the head) and also in the palms of the hands.
