Purpose of the study

• The purpose of the this study aims at investigating the influence of the short-term memory by using suffix word strategy.

Background of the study

• English is a communication tool. It is a basic condition for people who work in the future.

• Vocabulary is a basis of learning language. It also can deliver speakers’ meaning, thoughts, and opinions.

• Vocabulary learning strategy is an important issue for language learners.

1. Is there any significance of the vocabulary-learning accuracy through suffix word strategy?

2. Is there any influence on suffix word strategy and short-term memory?

The significance of the study

• This study will help language learners enrich the vocabulary through suffix word strategy in short-term period. Moreover, the influences between suffix word strategy and short-term memory, it is worth investigating.

The importance of vocabulary

Although body language or gesture can assist that people want to express, meaning and thought are limited. A vocabulary without grammar can convey the meaning. “Vocabulary is the basic access to language.”

Vocabulary has always been one of the significant issues related both with teachers and learners of foreign languages.

If you spend most of your time studying grammar, your English will not improve very much. You will see more improvement if you learn more words and expressions. You can say almost anything with words.

The definition of suffix word

• In linguistics, the suffix word means an affix which is placed after the stem of a word.

• Common examples are case endings, which indicate the grammatical case of nouns or adjectives, and verb endings, which form the conjugation of verbs.

• Suffix is called an affirmative, as they can alter the form of the words to which they are fixed.

The influence of the vocabulary learning strategy for language learners

The memory strategies as a vocabulary learning strategy is more effective than word lists to improve language level.

The importance of learning strategy

Learning strategies are the thoughts and actions that individuals use to accomplish a learning goal.

Memory, cognitive and compensation strategies are incorporated into the direct strategy and the indirect strategy is also subdivided metacognitive, affective and social strategies.

The influence of short-term memory

• Short-term memory (STM) is also called primary or active memory.

• It is capacity for holding a small amount of information in mind in an active, readily available state or a short period of time.

• People can commonly cited capacity is 7 ± 2 elements in short-term memory.

• The questionnaire has five options strongly agree, agree, no comment, disagree and strongly disagree. (Appendix B)

• The contents of the questionnaire are related to suffix word strategy and short-term memory.
