CHARACTERISTICS• Islam religion forbids the representation of

human and animal forms, so the most important artistic achievement are:

• architecture

• design (pottery, ivory pieces, metalwork, etc)

ARCHITECTURE• Buildings were made with

poor-quality construction materials, such as brick, wood or plaster.

• The external decoration of the buildings were simple, but inside they were covered with marble and coloured tiles, and decorated with wood or plaster.

• Designs were usually decorations of vegetables (arabesque), geométric figures (tracery) and inscriptions from the Koran (epigraphy).

• They used horseshoe arches.

• They also used semicular arches.

MAIN BUILDINGS• The main buildings were:

• palaces, surrounded by gardens with fountains.

• mosques, where Muslims met to pray.

area where the baths and the harem were found.

• All the palaces had beautiful gardens with fountains.

• The mosque is the most important building for the Muslims.

• Its structure is based on Muhammad's house in Medina.

• It has a courtyard surrounded by a portico.

• In it there is a fountain where the attendants wash and purify themselves.
