Por tanto podemos concluir que el sector cooperativo en España cuenta con una amplia tradición. En sus primeros años, basó su desarrollo en las cooperativas agrarias. Sin embargo, tras la llegada de la democracia a España, las cooperativas de trabajo asociado toman el relevo y, en las tres épocas de crisis sufridas desde entonces, han mostrado una fortaleza importante.

En el periodo más reciente, el sector cooperativo español debe centrarse en acrecentar su peso dentro de la economía española, si bien, este se ha visto incrementado tanto en el caso del empleo generado como en el de su contribución al PIB español
