    HistoryandDevelopmentoftheNationalElectricalCode

    TheNationalFireProtectionAssociationhasactedassponsoroftheNationalElectricalCodesince1911.Theoriginal Codedocumentwasdevelopedin1897asaresultoftheunitedeffortsofvariousinsurance,electrical,architectural,andalliedinterests.

    InaccordancewiththeprovisionsoftheNFPARegulationsGoverningCommitteeProjects,aNationalElectricalCodeCommitteeReportonProposalscontainingproposedamendmentstothe2002NationalElectricalCodewaspublishedbyNFPAinJuly2003.ThisreportrecordedtheactionsofthevariousCodeMakingPanelsandtheCorrelatingCommitteeoftheNationalElectricalCodeCommitteeoneachproposalthathadbeenmadetorevisethe2002Code.ThereportwascirculatedtoallmembersoftheNationalElectricalCodeCommitteeandwasmadeavailabletootherinterestedNFPAmembersandtothepublicforreviewandcomment.Followingthecloseofthepubliccommentperiod,theCodeMakingPanelsmet,actedoneachcomment,andreportedtheiractiontotheCorrelatingCommittee.NFPApublishedtheNationalElectricalCodeCommitteeReportonCommentsinApril2004,whichrecordedtheactionsoftheCodeMakingPanelsandtheCorrelatingCommitteeoneachpubliccommenttotheNationalElectricalCodeCommitteeReportonProposals.TheNationalElectricalCodeCommitteeReportonProposalsandtheNationalElectricalCodeCommitteeReportonCommentswerepresentedtothe2004May

    (A)FutureExpansionandConvenience.Plansandspecificationsthatprovideamplespaceinraceways,spareraceways,andadditionalspacesallowforfutureincreasesinelectricpowerandcommunicationcircuits.Distributioncenterslocatedinreadilyaccessiblelocationsprovideconvenienceandsafetyofoperation.
