alp appeal / anziehend
alp appeal / fascinating
Some claim they can hear the mountains beckoning. Some speak of the charm and grandeur of the Alps. But we simply admit to the fact that the Alps fascinate us in a very special way. They enchant us. High 4000m peaks inspire awe, cragged rock massifs and steep rock faces take our breath away, and the cheerfulness of the blooming mountain meadows simply fills us with joy.
In interpersonal relationships one speaks of sex appeal - and in regards to the mountain range we simply call this fascination ALP APPEAL. Sex appeal is in many instances an unconscious thing, almost natural. And it‘s also to do with the overall impression someone gives off. This overall impression of the Alps encom-passes so much that we couldn’t help ourselves; we just had to create an alpine collection. Only the Alps seem to succeed in being idyllic, dangerous and grand all at the same time. Traditions are the solid foundation of the alpine region, and it‘s probably this feeling of rootedness that allows the people to risk keeping in step with the times. That is exactly what ALP APPEAL is designed to convey: a love of nature, tried and proven fabrics and details combined with modern cuts and functional materials.
alpinisTs / a good trait
Sometimes it is said of the alpine natives that they are not only proud, but stubborn, too. We choose not to pass judgment on that opinion. But it cannot be denied how authentic and deep-rooted they are. For the benefit of this collection we malojans turned into real alpinists. The colors we borrowed from the mountain climbing outfits of the 70s. We based all of the designs on the alpine environment, the scenery and the animals, and on the traditional way of life. You might think we‘re crazy to transfer the patina of old wood paintings to modern jerseys, or design an entire garment in wood grain. But that is actually exactly our understanding of the connection between things old and new, traditional and modern.Because we do not only want to honor the Alps as a muse for our de-signs we also worked together with native manufacturers who master traditional techniques and produce locally. Our approach to tradition was twofold, picking up on elements of folklore and working with local manufacturers. For example, the woven wool jackets that were produced by the manufacturer Grasegger in Garmisch-Partenkirchen originate from the Steiner loden production In Schladming, which has existed for more than 110 years. Our hand knit jackets are made of pure wool from the Chiemgau and are hand-made in collaboration with a relief project in Armenia. ALP APPEAL and alp ethics are often intertwined. Of course the famous „Alpenglühen“, that amazing alpine sky and the purple rim of the clouds, is impossible to fix to fabric. But we did succeed in capturing the meadow and wood fragrances with a special fragrance print procedure. The women‘s range envelops the wearer in the smell of the typical alpine flowers, while the men‘s attire exudes the hearty fragrance of mountain pines.
urBan alps / Bike them
Love of the Alps can be lived out in the city. We enjoy the friction that occurs when the technical accomplishments of 2010 meet mountain traditions. Encountering traditions and history does not necessarily have to be equaled to an indulgence in 1940s romance. And we truly enjoy it when the ALP APPEAL collection leaves its marks on suburban culture: the fixie lifestyle. In New York the former single-speed railroad bicycles are popular with couriers. And in Europe this puristic two-wheeler is gathering fans. Count us among them. The fixie-styles in the collection have a „folkloristic“ approach, but much more reduced. Wherever you are, and wherever you have your roots, whether the alphorns echo in your ears or you‘re plugged into an MP3-player to hear your tunes - have good fun with the ALP APPEAL Collection! Go out there. Enjoy nature, climb the peaks and bike the urban Alps!

Bendler: Historically, a „Bändler“ is someone who sells ribbons, a traveling salesman for ribbons, ropes and strings. It can be looked up in a dictionary of names. So that is what Markus Bendler’s ancestors did. Markus Bendler does not sell ropes, but he is professionally entwined with them. In his very early school days Makus Bendler from Tyrol began using 70m long and 9,8mm thin, round ribbons to tie around his limbs – and just like his ancestors – the ropes secure his existence and keep him from falling.
In his youth Markus survived some scary trial-and-error phases with ropes and rocks. He soon bought a special interest book, studied knots and made close ties with the “Alpenverein”, the German Alpine Club. His expertise grew – first successes in climbing halls (at championships) and on rock faces were accumulated. Hundreds of kilometers of rock music on tape to accompany him on endurance tours were “ribboned off”. Markus soon switched to being a pro-fessional. In those days Markus crossed rocks, meanwhile he’s discovered his passion for climbing on steep ice. And his success continues: in 2009 and 2010 he won seven ice-climbing world cups in a row. He holds two world champi-onship titles and 2 overall world cup trophies. And, can you believe it? Despite having his head always in the clouds, he’s the type of guy to keep his feet on the ground. ;o)

loden steiner
loden
Everything has its history – but loden has a particularly nice story to tell. Legend has is it that, 600 years ago, a hunter’s wife quite unintentionally created the fabric. She loved her husband so strongly and washed his garments so ardently that her washing laid the foundations for the process of felting. The dedicated and careful way Loden Steiner today manufacture their loden cloths comes very close to the passi-onate emotions of the legendary hunter’s wife. The natural functionality of felted cloths and loden are certainly the main reason why they have been continuously in use since then. This traditional fabric is extremely durable, water-resistant and keeps you warm and cozy. Generations of mountaineers have relied on loden material for decades – and, from now on, we do too.
loden steiner
Loden Steiner was founded in Mandling/Austria as early as 1888. This felt and loden factory is still family-run today – in the fifth generation. The Steiners have an undeniable pioneer spirit – members of the family were first to conquer the South face of the Dachstein, and they went down in alpine history with their tow lifts for skiers. But back to loden; after WW II the factory was completely rebuilt, and has since then con-tinuously been expanded and modernized. Their production range is impressive and includes every step from raw wool to the finished cloth: spinning, weaving, felting, finishing.
Loden Steiner plays an important economic role in the Dach-stein-Tauern region. Not only as an employer of 120 people, but as a buyer of agricultural commodities, as well. Their wool is purchased from local farmers.
A high level of creativity and flexibility is inherent in the very special network of this family enterprise. Literally years and years of experience, true commitment and a high level of intuition are the outstanding features of Loden Steiner. The harmonious teamplay between the generations guarantees that the Loden Steiner products keep in pace with the times and that they can continue to live up to their philosophy: Modern by tradition. Climb high – and stay ahead!
