CourseObjectivesUponsuccessfulcompletionofthiscourse,youwillbeableto:

1. Incorporatesophisticatedvocabulary,expressions,anddiscoursepatternswhenhandlingreal‐lifebusinesstasks,suchascontactingyourclientsonthephoneorwritinganewsletteratyourworkplace.

2. Demonstrateanunderstandingofthepotentialcommunicationconflictsandproposesolutionstothosecomplexinter‐culturalsituations.

3. Analyzeandexplaintheaestheticsandunderlyingsocio‐culturalvaluesofparticulargroupofconsumers,includingyourself,andusetheinformationwhendeterminingyourmarketingstrategy.

4. ExpandyourabilitytofindcredibleonlineresourcesinJapanesethatcapturecurrent

Japanesebusinesstrendsandpresentashortsummarybothorallyandinwriting.5.ContributetocreateacommunityoflifelonglearnersofJapanese.

MovieLogs:Youwillbewatchingseveralfilms/TVdramasduringthesemester.ThepurposeofthisassignmentistogiveyoutheopportunitiestoobservehowJapaneselanguageisusedinbusinesssituationsandhownon‐Japanesepersonsareperceivedinthecoveredmedia,inpreparationforexchangingyourthoughtsontheminclass.First,enjoylisteningtonaturalconversationalJapanese,meaningfulvocabularyincontext,andculturallyappropriate(orinappropriate?)behaviorsthroughwatchingthem. Next,onthedramalogsheet,writein:1. Timeframetouseasreferenceintheclassdiscussion.2. CommentsonSocietyandCulture—anythingthatyounoticedwhilewatching,suchashow

peopleinteractdependingontheirrelationships,thewayemotionwasconveyed,useofgestures,socialsettings,etc.

3. CommentsonLanguage—anythingthatisrelatedtothelanguageuse;thephrasesyouwereabletocatch,male/femaledifference,fillers/hesitationnoisesused,personalpronouns,etc.

4. Vocabulary—anynewwordsthatyouheardandguessedthemeaningofthroughthegivencontextand/orbylookingupinadictionary.

Youarerecentlyhiredasaninter‐culturalconsultantinTokyo.Yourassignmentistocomeupwithatrainingscenarioeitherforthe2020OlympicCommitteemembersinTokyowhoarenativespeakersofJapaneseornon‐Japanesewhoaregoingtobeapartof2020Olympic.Ingroupsof3‐4,prepareahalf‐an‐houractivitythatfocusesonthesocio‐culturalvaluescertaingroupofpeoplemayhaveandproposeapossiblesolutionthroughlearningactivities.

Thisgivesyoutheopportunitytopursueaninterestyouhaveacquired,orsumupobservationsyouhavemade,orproposeanewperspectiveonglobalbusinesspersonaltraining.Whileyouengageingroupresearch,besureto:

‐DocumentyourownresearchexperiencethroughCollabForumssothatyoucanreflectonandshowyourresearchprocess.‐Contributetoothers’researchdevelopment,byaskingforclarification,addingcomments,orsharingresources.

onevisual(shorterthan2minutes)thatincludeshortvideoclipssuchasTVcommercialsandexcerptsfromTVdramasorfilms,andonereadingmaterialssuchaswebsites,blogs,andemail.
