What is USB?

• Universal serial bus.• A standard bus to connector device to host

computer.• Do not need device configuration or install

driver in computer.• Without rebooting when plugging and

unplugging device.

Why is USB 3.1?

• USB / HDMI / Thunderbolt Data RateUSB3.0 has lower rate of other usual device.

6

Why is USB 3.1?• We have large data everyday.

Such as HDD, DVD, BR-DVD, HD TV, UHD TV(Ultra HD).

• People demand higher performance between host and peripheral.(Ex. SATAIII: 6Gbps, PCI-e: 8Gbps)

• Need to improve EMI performance. USB 3.0 will affect some device. (like wireless LAN Card)

Compare – Data Rate

Characteristic USB3.1 USB3.0

Data Rate 10 Gbps (Gen 2) 5.0 Gbps (Gen 1)

Encoded Mode 128b/132b 8b/10b

Encoded Loss -3.03% (96.97) -20% (80%)

Actual Rate 10Gb * (128/132)= 9.697Gb= 1212MB

5Gb * (8/10)= 4Gb

= 500MB

• About Data Rate.

• USB3.1 real transfer speed is up to x2.4 of USB3.0.

9

Compare - Connector• Review USB 2.0 & USB 3.0 connector.

10

Compare - Connector• About USB 3.1 connector

• Type A : similar with USB2.0/3.0 Type A.• Type C : Basic on USB2.0 Micro B.

USB.org want to let Type C become the common connector of mobile devices.

• Existing USB connector is difficult to use.New connector is no directionality.

• Rev0.4 in Apr. Rev0.7 in May. Not has official revision 1.0 now.

• Look like:

11

Compliance• Updating compliance plans & specs.

• Host/ Devices will be test for:– Support USB 2.0 speeds.– Meet Superspeed(Gen1) requirements.– Meet Superspeed+(Gen2) requirements.

• USB 3.1 Compliance Requirement– New electrical test for physical layer.– New cable and connector test.

12

Compliance• USB3.1 Compliance Timeline

13

Conclusion• High performance.

USB 3.1 provide data rate up to 10Gbps, 2x of USB3.0.• Conveniently.

Standard connector, has no directionality.• Less lose of encoder.

Efficiency will be improve up.• No driver software changes required.

• EMI performance upgrade.Improved shielding and grounding of connector.
