( FAQ: "...relevant to both space exploration and social need")
Citizens from around the world work together
To improving life on Earth and life in space
Challenge?
Challenge = [挑戦、課題、困難]
At NASA, we like to think of Apollo 13as our first “app challenge”.
International Space Apps Challenge Final Report
"Houston, We've had a problem"
"Failure is not an option"
During that historic mission we were faced with a challenge that needed to be solved with limited resources and limited time ‒ an unexpected group of people came together in an unexpected way to solve an unexpected challenge. Our goal was to keep that spirit alive in the International Space Apps Challenge.
International Space Apps Challenge Final Report
Apps?
Application = [適用、応用、活用、利用]
Application ≠ Software
citizen science ≒ crowd science, crowd-sourced science, networked science
"No! Participants in the event will collaborate to build software, open hardware, data visualization, and citizen science platform solutions..."
"Is the event limited to just software development?"

personal impression
The first day or so we all pointed to our countries. The third or fourth day we were pointing to our continents. By the fifth day, we were aware of only one Earth.
