Overview
1.1 About This Manual
This instruction manual is a complete guide to installing, configuring, andoperating the MAXLink HOA 7320 Optical Amplifier module. Please read theentire document before beginning installation or operation.
Chapter 1 provides a description of the HOA 7320. Chapter 2 describes the installation procedure. Chapter 3 describes the web interface. Chapter 4 explains how to connect the HOA 7320 to a NMS. Chapter 5 outlines maintenance procedures. Chapter 6 provides instructions for what to do in the event of problems. Appendix A provides complete technical specifications. Appendix B provides a list of Harmonics offices around the world.
1.2 DescriptionThe Harmonic MAXLink HOA 7320 Optical Amplifier provides cost-effectiveamplification of 1550 nm broadcast video signals in FSAN PON architectures.HOA 7320 amplifiers provide high optical output power of 20 dBm.
The HOA 7320 has the following key features:

1.3 Status LEDs
The HOA 7320 has four LEDs on the front panel indicating the conditionsdescribed in Table 1-1. The rear panel has an additional LED that indicates thestatus of the laser output.
1.4 Applications
The HOA 7320 Optical Amplifiers are part of Harmonics MAXLink line. Thisproduct line is designed to meet the economic and technical requirements ofbroadband service providers. Typical applications include:
Medium and long haul applications beyond the reach of 1310 nmtransmitters
Fiber dense architectures Redundant rings Broadcast layer transmission Hub interconnects

2.3 Precautions
ESD ALERT: Follow strict Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) precautions whenhandling or working on Harmonic equipment and relatedcomponents.
When operating the unit in an equipment rack, take the followingprecautions:
Maintain the ambient temperature around the unit (which may be higherthan the room temperature) within the limit specified for the unit.
Provide sufficient airflow around the unit. Make sure electrical circuits are not overloaded. Consider the nameplate
rating of all the connected equipment, and make sure you have overcurrent protection.
Properly ground all equipment. Do not place objects on top of the unit.
CAUTION: Use of controls or adjustments or performance of proceduresother than those specified herein may result in hazardousradiation exposure.
WARNING: To prevent bodily injury when mounting or servicing thisunit in a rack, you must take special precautions to ensurethat the system remains stable.
The following guidelines are provided to ensure your safety:
This unit should be mounted at the bottom of the rack if it is the only unitin the rack.
When mounting this unit in a partially filled rack, load the rack from thebottom to the top with the heaviest component at the bottom of the rack. If the rack is provided with stabilizing devices, install the stabilizers
before mounting or servicing the unit in the rack.

2.4 Mounting the HOA 7320 in a Rack
The HOA 7320 mounts in a standard 19-inch or a 23-inch rack. You can flush-mount or mid-mount the HOA 7320 by changing the orientation and location
of the mounting brackets.The HOA 7320 can be mounted in one of these cabinets:
19-inch Telco rack (mid-mount; see lower left of Figure 2-1) 23-inch Telco rack (mid-mount; see lower right of Figure 2-1) Standard 19-inch cabinet (flush-mount; see upper left of Figure 2-1) 23-inch cabinet (flush-mount; see upper right of Figure 2-1)
Mounting screws are thread-forming UNC #12-24. For best results, always usescrews provided by the rack manufacturer.
To insure the integrity of secondary grounding paths, paint and other non-
conductive surface coatings should be removed from the surfaces between themounting hardware and the framework or cabinet. The surfaces to be joinedshould be cleaned and an anti-oxidant solution should be applied beforejoining the surfaces.

2.4.1 Mounting the HOA 7320 in a 19-Inch Telco Rack
To mount the HOA 7320 in a 19-inch Telco rack:
1. Place the unit in the rack.2. Use four mounting screws to attach the mounting brackets on the
HOA 7320 front panel to the rack.
2.4.2 Mounting the HOA 7320 in a 19-Inch Cabinet
To mount the HOA 7320 in a 19-inch equipment cabinet, you must move themounting brackets from the center-mount position to the flush-mountposition on the unit.
To mount the HOA 7320 in a 19-inch equipment cabinet:
1. Remove the four screws retaining each of the two mounting brackets.2. Re-position the mounting brackets over the holes in the front of each side
of the unit. Make sure the wide flange of the bracket remains against theunit, and the narrow flange extends out and faces forward.
3. Re-insert and tighten four screws to attach each bracket.4. Place the unit in the rack.5. Use four mounting screws to attach the mounting brackets on the
HOA 7320 to the rack.
2.4.3 Mounting the HOA 7320 in a 23-inch Telco Rack
To mount the HOA 7320 in a 23-inch Telco rack, you must rotate themounting brackets, as shown in the upper right of Figure 2-1.
To mount the HOA 7320 in a 23-inch Telco rack:
1. Remove the four screws retaining each of the two mounting brackets.2. Re-orient the bracket so that the narrow flange of the bracket is against the
unit, and the wide flange extends out and faces forward.3. Re-insert and tighten two screws to attach each bracket.4. Place the unit in the rack.5. Use four mounting screws to attach the mounting brackets on the
HOA 7320 front panel to the rack.
2.4.4 Mounting the HOA 7320 in a 23-inch Cabinet
To mount the HOA 7320 in a 23-inch equipment cabinet, you must move themounting brackets to the front, flush-mount positions on the unit and rotate
the brackets as shown in the upper right of Figure 2-1.To mount the HOA 7320 in a 23-inch equipment cabinet:
1. Remove the four screws retaining each of the two mounting brackets.2. Re-orient the bracket so that the narrow flange of the bracket is against the
unit, and the wide flange extends out and faces forward.3. Re-position the mounting brackets over the holes in the front of each side
of the unit. Make sure the narrow flange of the bracket is against the unit,and the wide flange extends out and faces forward.

4. Re-insert and tighten two screws to attach each bracket.5. Place the unit in the rack.6. Use four mounting screws to attach the mounting brackets on the
HOA 7320 to the rack.
2.5 Grounding the HOA 7320
Before powering the HOA 7320, ensure the unit has been properly groundedper your installation grounding standards. Ground studs are available for thispurpose as shown in Figure 1-2 on page 1-2.
Use a two-hole compressed ground lug (Panduit LCD8-10A-L or equivalent)capable of taking a #8 AWG or larger wire.
2.6 Connecting Power
The HOA 7320 is available in an AC power model and a DC power model.After mounting the HOA 7320 in a rack and grounding the unit, follow thepower connection procedure below for the model that you are installing.
2.6.1 Connecting AC Power
The AC-powered HOA 7320 has one 110/220 VAC (50/60 Hz) inputconnector that requires input voltage from 100 to 240 VAC, at 50 to 60 Hzsingle phase. Selection switching over this range is automatic. The AC powerplug is located on the rear panel.
To connect AC power:
1. Connect the ground contact to ground. This is important for your safety.The ground contact is located on the rear panel, as shown in Figure 1-2 onpage 1-2.
2. Connect the power cord to a 110 VAC or 220 VAC (50/60 Hz) electricalsocket. (The AC-powered HOA 7320 features an auto-sensing powersupply.)The HOA 7320 boots up. It takes about 60 seconds for all systems tooperate.
CAUTION: To avoid personal injury and damage to the equipment, use apower outlet with a protective ground (third wire) contact.
WARNING: This product relies on the buildings installation for short-
circuit (over current) protection. Ensure that a fuse or circuitbreaker no larger than 120 VAC, 15 A U.S. (240 VAC, 10 Ainternational) is used on the phase conductors (all current-carrying conductors).

To connect DC power:
1. Turn the manual pump switch, located on the rear panel, to the OFFposition. For location of the pump switch, see Figure 1-2 on page 1-2.
WARNING: Applying power with the pump switch ONmay causedamage to the unit and result in unsafe conditions. Ensurethat all optical outputs are properly connected or terminatedbefore you turn on the pump.
2. Remove the cover to the power supply terminal.3. Connect theAfeed power supply to the A power terminals.4. Connect the Bfeed power supply to the B power terminals.5. Verify that the unit is receiving power by viewing the Power LED on the
front panel. Green indicates that the unit is receiving power.6. Replace the power supply terminal cover.
2.7 Connecting the Input Fiber Cable
After you have mounted the HOA 7320 in a rack, connect the input fibercable.
The HOA 7320 has a single optical input port, which is located on the rear ofthe amplifier, as shown in Figure 1-2 on page 1-2. It is protected with a dustcap.
To connect the input fiber cable:1. Remove the dust cap from the HOA 7320 amplifiers input connector andstore the cap in a clean plastic bag for future use.
2. Verify that the fiber cable connector is clean and has not been exposedto any contamination. If the unit has not been previously opened, theconnector will be protected. If you suspect that the connector may havebeen exposed to contamination (e.g., by a dirty fiber cable connector),follow the cleaning procedure in Section 5.2 Cleaning Fiber Optic Connectorsof this manual.Clean the fiber connector only while the optical amplifier is turned off.Any contamination on either the fiber cable or HOA 7320 amplifierconnector can lead to significantly degraded optical link performance.This degradation will most likely manifest itself as poor carrier-to-noiseperformance.
3. Connect the input fiber cable to the input port.
2.8 Connecting the Output Fiber Cables
The optical output connector of the MAXLink HOA 7320 Optical Amplifier islocated on the rear of the module, as shown in Figure 1-3 on page 1-2.

The optical connector is protected by an optical terminator and spring-loadedshutter. The optical terminator and shutter prevent dust from entering theadapter before the amplifier is installed. The optical shutter also protects youfrom accidental exposure to light radiation while the unit is operational.
DANGER:The fiber carries invisible laser radiation.AVOID DIRECTEXPOSURE TO BEAM.Never operate the unit with a broken fiberor with a fiber connector disconnected.
This product is a Class 3B Laser with a Level 3B Hazard.
Use the following procedure to connect fiber optic cable to the amplifieroutput:
1. Disable the amplifiers optical output by turning the Laser Output keyswitch on the rear panel to the OFFposition (see Figure 1-2 on page 1-2).
2. Verify that the Laser Output Enabled indicator (the amber LED on theamplifiers rear panel) is off, indicating that optical output is disabled.
3. Open the fiber access cover to expose the optical output connector, asshown in Figure 2-2.

4. Remove the optical terminator from the connector and store it in a cleanplastic bag for future use.
WARNING: Do not operate the HOA 7320 until you have properlyterminated or connected the optical output.
5. Verify that the fiber cable connector is clean and has not been exposed toany contamination. If the unit has not been previously opened, the
connector will be protected. If you suspect that a connector may have beenexposed to contamination (for example, by a dirty fiber cable connector),follow the cleaning procedure in Section 5.2 Cleaning Fiber Optic Connectorsof this manual.Any contamination on either the fiber cable or amplifier connector canlead to significantly degraded optical link performance. This degradationwill most likely manifest itself as poor carrier-to-noise performance.
6. Connect the output fiber connector. Note the key characteristic of themating connectors and align them accordingly.

7. Turn the Laser Output key switch to the ENABLEDposition. Verify theoptical connection.
2.8.1 Disconnecting Output Fiber Cables
If you need to disconnect output fiber cable, follow these instructions.
To disconnect output fiber cable:1. Disable the amplifiers optical output by turning the Laser Output key
switch to the OFFposition.2. Verify that the Laser Output Enabled indicator (the amber LED on the
amplifiers rear panel) is off, indicating that optical output is disabled.3. Disconnect the output fiber from the connector.4. Install an optical terminator.
2.9 Connecting a Remote Interlock or Alarm Monitor
The HOA 7320 has a 5-pin connector that allows you to remotely monitor
alarms and disable the lasers. The interlock and alarm relay connector islocated on the rear panel, as shown in Figure 2-3.

You can connect an interlock device and/or an alarm device using18 to 22 gauge wire. Table 2-1shows the pin definitions.

When operating normally with no alarm present, Pin 2 and Pin 3 makeelectrical contact, while Pin 1 is left open. When an alarm occurs, electricalcontact is made between Pin 1 and Pin 3, while Pin 2 is left open. This remainsuntil the alarm condition is removed.
When Pin 4 and Pin 5 are in contact, the optical output of the HOA 7320 isenabled. The HOA 7320 ships from the factory with a jumper connecting Pin 4
and Pin 5. To use the interlock remotely, replace the jumper with longer wires.
NOTE: If there is no contact between Pins 4 and 5, the laser of the HOA 7320is disabled.
2.10 Enabling Remote Monitoring
You can connect the MAXLink HOA 7320 Optical Amplifier to your TCP/IPnetwork, so that you can monitor and control the amplifier remotely.
After you have completed the installation procedures described in this
chapter, you can use a network management system (NMS) or a web browserto monitor and control the MAXLink HOA 7320 Optical Amplifier.
To remotely monitor the MAXLink HOA 7320 Optical Amplifier, you need to:
Connect the HOA 7320 to the LAN or WAN via the Enternet port shownin Figure 1-2 on page 1-2
Assign an IP address to the amplifier
2.10.1 Accessing the Serial Port
In order to assign an IP address to the HOA 7320, you must connect a PC tothe HOA 7320 and use a terminal emulation program to access the command
line interface.To complete this process, you need:
PC running a terminal emulation application 4-conductor RJ-11 telephone (crossover) cable (included with the
HOA 7320) DB-9 to RJ-11 adapter (included with the HOA 7320)
To connect a PC to the HOA 7320:
1. Connect the RJ-11 cable to the serial port of the HOA 7320 (see Figure 2-3on page 2-9).
2. Connect one end of the DB-9 to RJ-11 adapter to the RJ-11 cable, and theother end of the adapter to the serial port of the PC.
NOTE: If the TTL Alarm is to be used, you must provide an additionalconnection to pin 3. Do not connect pin 3 to any of the pins on theDB-9 connector.

2.10.2 Changing Passwords
Passwords are required to adjust the settings of the HOA 7320 via the web,or to access the HOA 7320 via Telnet and the command line interface. As asecurity measure, Harmonic recommends that, during installation, youchange both passwords from their default values. Use the command lineinterface (CLI) to change the passwords.
Once the HOA 7320 is operating, the web interface provides a convenientmeans of managing it remotely. There are two levels of access to theHOA 7320 web interface:
Statusfor monitoring the HOA 7320 Adjustmentsfor monitoring and adjusting the HOA 7320
Table 2-3shows the user name and default password required to access theHOA 7320 user interfaces.
The passwords can be changed. User names cannot be changed.

Use the following procedure to access the configuration utility available in thecommand line interface and assign a static IP address to the HOA 7320.
To assign an IP address:1. Use the PC that is connected to the HOA 7320s serial port via the serial
cable described above or equivalent.2. If you have not logged into the HOA 7320, at the login prompt, type the
user name and press Enter. At the password prompt, type the passwordand press Enter.The default user name is adminand the default password is password.
3. At the > prompt, type the following string:config -i x.x.x.x -g y.y.y.y -m 0xffffff00
where x.x.x.xis the IP address, y.y.y.yis the gateway address, and0xffffff00is the netmask.
4. PressEnter.
2.10.4 Setting the System Time
If you have set an IP address for the amplifier, you have two options foraccessing the amplifiers CLI to set the system time. You can use the IPaddress to establish a Telnet session, or you can use the serial interfacedescribed above. Once you have accessed the CLI, you can set the system timewith the aid of an NTP server or by entering a system time manually.

To set the system time using the NTP server:

Web Interface
This chapter introduces the MAXLink HOA 7320 Optical Amplifier webinterface. Once the amplifier is operating, the web interface provides aconvenient means to manage it. The HOA 7320 has an embedded HTTPserver, which allows you to remotely view the status of alarms and settings, ormake adjustments to the amplifier. However, for security reasons, a password
is required to change any settings.This chapter describes:

3.1 Requirements
You can access the HOA 7320 web interface from any computer that isconnected to the same IP network and has a web browser.
To use the web interface, the HOA 7320 must be properly installed, asdescribed in Chapter 2, Installing the HOA 7320, and you need to know theamplifiers IP address. Specifically, the HOA 7320 must be connected to yourIP network as described in Section 2.10 Enabling Remote Monitoringon page2-10, and IP addresses must have been assigned to the HOA 7320 as describedin Section 2.10.1 Accessing the Serial Porton page 2-10.
3.2 HTTP Access ControlThere are two levels of access to the HOA 7320 web interface:
Statusfor monitoring the amplifier Adjustmentsfor monitoring and adjusting the amplifier
To make adjustments, the user name and password are required.
Your company can provide different levels of access to different people basedon their job function or other criteria. Some staff members can monitor theHOA 7320, while others may adjust the settings.

To change access level, click the Change Accessbutton near the top of the webinterface. When prompted, enter the user name and password. Once verified,you are given the read-write capability to configure the unit. The user nameand default password are given in Section 3.4 Adjusting the HOA 7320on page3-3.
NOTE: To maintain network security, Harmonic recommends that youchange the password during HOA 7320 installation, as described inSection 2.10.2 Changing Passwordson page 2-11.
3.3 Accessing and Using the Web Interface
You can access the web interface for the HOA 7320 from your browser.
To access the web interface:
1. Using a computer that is connected to the same TCP/IP network as theHOA 7320, launch a web browser.
2. In the web browsers Address (URL) field, type the IP address of theamplifier, then press Enter.Your browser connects to the amplifier, and the web interface appears, asshown in Figure 3-1. The top frame identifies the HOA 7320. The leftframe displays any current alarms and refreshes every 30 seconds. Theright frame shows the amplifierss current configuration.

3.4 Adjusting the HOA 7320
To change the amplifiers settings, you must enter the web interface, thenchange your access level.
To adjust the HOA 7320:
1. Enter the web interface, as described in Section 3.3. The web interfaceappears, as shown in Figure 3-1 on page 3-2, and you are in status(read-only) mode.
2. Click the Change Accessbutton in the top frame.The Change Access (login) page appears, as shown in Figure 3-2.

3. Type the user name and password, then click Log On.The user name is Config. By default, the password is config, but it mayhave been changed during installation. You may need to check with yoursystem administrator.The user name and password are case sensitive.
NOTE: To maintain network security, Harmonic recommends that youchange the password during installation of the HOA 7320. Forinstructions on how to change the password, see Section2.10.2 Changing Passwordson page 2-11, or contact Harmonic
customer support for assistance.
The Amplifier page appears, as shown in Figure 3-3 on page 3-4, and you

are now in adjustments (read-write) mode.

4. You can edit many of the settings by typing the new values or using thedrop-down menus (where present). After changing values (as manyvalues as you want), click Applyfor your changes to take effect. TheConfirmation page appears, as shown in Figure 3-4.If you want to clear your changes without saving them, you can revert to
the previous settings by clicking Refresh Values.

Connecting the HOA 7320 to an NMS
Once the HOA 7320 is operating, you can use a network management system(NMS) to monitor and control it. This chapter tells you how to connect theHOA 7320 to an NMS.
For instructions on installing, configuring, and operating an NMS, please referto the documentation for the NMS.
MAXLink HOA 7320 Optical Amplifiers have an embedded SNMP agent thatenables communication between the HOA 7320 and any devices that supportSNMP versions 1, 2c, or 3.
To connect the HOA 7320 to an NMS:
1. Complete the installation procedures described in Chapter 2, Installing theHOA 7320. To connect to an NMS, the HOA 7320 must be connected toyour IP network as described in Section 2.10 Enabling Remote Monitoringon page 2-10, and IP addresses must have been assigned to the HOA 7320as described in Section 2.10.3 Assigning an IP Address to the HOA 7320onpage 2-12.
2. Determine the IP address of the HOA 7320.3. Determine your default access rights for different versions of the SNMP
protocol. The default access rights for SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3 areshown in Table 4-1and Table 4-2.
4. Locate and compile the Harmonic MIB (management information base)files for the HOA 7320. Feed the MIBs for the HOA 7320 into your NMSsMIB compiler.
5. Add the HOA 7320 as an SNMP trap target in your NMS, so that the NMSreceives SNMP notifications from the HOA 7320.

5.1 Low Output Power Mode
You can place the HOA 7320 in a low output power mode from a switch onthe rear panel or via the web interface.
NOTE: Harmonic recommends that you always disable the laser outputbefore disconnecting any optical fibers.
The optical output power is limited to 15 dBm while the HOA 7320 is in lowoutput power mode.
5.2 Cleaning Fiber Optic Connectors
DANGER: The fiber cable carries invisible laser radiation. AVOIDEXPOSURE TO THE BEAM. Never operate a unit that has abroken fiber or a disconnected fiber connector.
Dirty optical connectors are the leading source of poor performance in anoptical fiber network. Dirty optical connectors lead to optical signal loss andreflections, which in turn can seriously degrade carrier-to-noise (CNR)performance and, in some cases, distortion performance.
Therefore, Harmonic recommends that you clean all mating fiber connectors,before connecting them to an optical device.
In addition, if you suspect that the optical connector of an HOA 7320 mayhave been exposed to contamination (by a dirty fiber cable connector, forexample), you should properly clean the HOA 7320 optical connector beforeconnecting the optical fiber.
CAUTION: Improper cleaning of an optical connector can do more harmthan good. Never spray a clean-air product onto the surface of

6.1 Alarms
describes the alarms for the HOA 7320. Every alarm is reported via SNMPand via the web interface. In addition, any alarm triggers the alarm relay, andthe Status LED on the front panel illuminates red.

6.2 Troubleshooting
DANGER: The fiber carries invisible laser radiation. AVOID DIRECTEXPOSURE TO BEAM. Never operate the unit with a brokenfiber or with a fiber connector disconnected. Never operate unitwith unconnected output shutters open.
Should a problem occur, check the following:
1. Confirm that the HOA 7320 amplifier is receiving power.2. View the HOA 7320 front panel display to determine if an alarm conditionis indicated.
3. Verify optical input level and optical output levels to determine if there isa dirty connector.
Table 6-2lists front panel LED behavior and alarm conditions and possiblecorrective actions.
Composite alarm At least one of the previous alarms in thistable has been triggered.
Power saving modealarm EDFA is in power saving mode.

off, the Manual Switch off LED on the front panel will also be
red. If the above steps does not clear the alarm, contact

38Low Output Power Mode
Alarm
Unit is in low output
power mode.
The unit is operating in the low output power mode and the
output power is limited to about 15dBm per output.
To return the unit to the normal mode verify that the three
ways of putting the unit in the low mode (local toggle switch,
TTL input, and HTTP/SNMP remote command) are all turned
off.
If none of the above corrects the problem, contact Customer
Service
39 Interlock Open Alarm Interlock is open.Check interlock status. If interlock is closed and unit is still in
alarm state, contact customer service.
40 High Ouput Power ShutdownAlarm
Unit is shut down due tohigh output power.
Power cycle the unit. If alarm still exists, contact customerservice.
41 Power Supply A Status AlarmThe -48V input to power
suppy A is out of range.Check Input A voltage range.
42 Power Supply B Status AlarmThe -48V input to power
suppy B is out of range.Check input B voltage range.
43 Laser Current AlarmPump laser current is too
high.
Check for other alarms. If no other alarm is found, contact
customer service.
44 Input Power AlarmInput optical power is
below threshold.
Verify that your input signal is connected with the proper input
power (range from -5 to +10dBm).
Check low input power alarm threshold.
Clean the input connector on the EDFA (see 5.2 Cleaning
Fiber Optic Connectors on page 5-1).If none of the above corrects the problem, contact Customer
Service.
45 Output Power AlarmOutput power is below
normal operating setting.
Verify that the input power to the EDFA is connected with the
proper level and that the Laser is enabled.
Check for other alarms, and i f present, follow the
recommendation above to clear them.
If none of the above corrects the problem, contact Customer
